Introduction

Conventional CRT TVs are almost a thing of the past – the future belongs firmly to flat screen TVs. The sizes and colours of flat screen TVs available today are many and varied, but so too is the quality.

In general, there are two major product categories: LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and Plasma TVs.

As there are only a few small plasma TVs the choice between LCD and plasma only really becomes relevant if you are looking at a 37 inch or larger TV screen. While both systems offer a high image quality, potential buyers should consider the following issues before purchasing.

As with many things in life the choice of the right television depends on the way it is used. Where should it be placed? Do I want to enjoy movies at cinema quality or to play console games instead?

What’s my type? LCD or plasma?

LCDs work with liquid crystals. These create an image by breaking the light in a certain way. To avoid reflections and other interferences most devices are featured with matt fronts. Compared to plasma TVs colours are more luminous and provide brilliant colours even in bright rooms. However, many TVs have problems displaying a deep black, which can sometimes appear faded. In addition, most will only deliver a high quality image if the viewer sits directly in front of it. If you’re watching from more than a 45 degree visual angle (i.e. outside the principal axis of the TV) the contrast is reduced and the image can appear grey. This is a result of the LCD backlight format.

LCD TVs

Plasma devices were at the forefront of the flat screen movement. The technology is based upon ionised gas or plasma, which is illuminated through electronic impulses. The devices deliver true colours even outside the principal axis. As plasma has a very short response time it is perfectly suited for quick image changes such as sport broadcasts.

However, one problem with plasma TVs is the so-called burning-in or after image. Do you watch a lot of non-standard format videos (black bars) or play console games with static graphics? If this is the case, the overcharging of the light beams can sometimes burn a visible pattern into the TV screen. This can also occur through static TV station logos. This is much more unlikely with newer plasma models but the risk should still be taken into account.

Sony KDL-46W5500 - awesome LCD TV with stunning pictures

Advantages: Stunning pictures, loaded with features, useful extra connection options
Disadvantages: Expensive - but it is a Sony

...I initially settled on a Sony KDL46W4500 after seeing one in a store and was just about to part with my hard earned cash when I started reading reviews and read about the so-called dreaded 'backlight bleed'. Given the high cost of the Sony, this completely put me off, so it was back to the drawing board for me. I spent more time looking around but never quite found a set I fancied as much as the 46W4500, that was until the Sony KDL46W5500 came out. ...
...I'm using it with a Sony blu ray player and although I haven't watched any blu rays yet, the DVD upscaling is jawdroppingly good - the sports mode makes the pictures scarily real. I've been going through my entire DVD collection just trying out the pictures and it's totally different to watching them on my old CRT screen. Can't wait to see blu ray, although it's difficult to imagine how much better the pictures can get. Of course I was a bit worried ...

Good sound and picture for the size at a great price

Advantages: Easy set up, good picture, good looking TV + good value
Disadvantages: Your friends will get one

...Some people say that Samsung TVs aren't that good for sound. For our family, the sound on this TV is fine. There is no really deep bass but we don't need or want it and are happy with the built in sound system. Watching programmes in HD makes difference compared to normal TV. Normal TV is fine on this size, although in some programmes, such as fast moving sports, you really need them to be transmitted in HD to really see the quality of the TV. ...

Is 200hz all it's cracked up to be?

Advantages: 200hz feature, great black levels, vivid colours
Disadvantages: 200hz feature might not appeal to everyone

...look very closely, I'm glad Sony did this however as I feel they could have looked extremely tacky if they were more visible; seems like a design addition just for the sake of it. On the bottom right hand side of the frame are some touch buttons which allow you to change channels, inputs, and volume, these buttons are only visible when you touch the frame and completely disappear when not in use; I felt this was a nice touch. In the centre of the ...
...the set is turned on, the light fades out when the TV is switched off. Underneath the glossy frame, a strip of glass hangs below which holds the thin wide speaker that stretches along the entire width of the television. The speaker is finished in silver, with additional speaker covers available to purchase separately, in black or red, depending on your decor! The glass separates the LCD from the speaker and creates a classy 'floating effect' Picture ...

Good picture, simple to use, easy to install

Advantages: Good picture, easy to use, good value
Disadvantages: It's a good value set so the sound could be better, and the screen could be bigger.

Overview This tv has a great picture and the sound is kind of what you might expect for a low cost television. It picks up fringe digital reception pretty well and I'm pleased I bought it. If I had the chance to give it back and buy something else for about the same price then I wouldn't as it does the job admirably. Why didn't i rate it excellent then? Well, I suppose it could have better sound. If it had better sound I'd rate it as excellent. ...
...of inches deep. It comes with a swivel stand, but you'll need a tv stand or table to put it on. It can be wall mounted, but you'll need an extra bracket for that, but the fittings and connection positions do allow for that. It has a space for a conditional access module (CAM) so you can watch services like setanta (if it hadn't gone bust anyway). There are two HDMI sockets plus some scart, component and composite inputs, 6 in all. Digital TV ...

A Very good tv by sony

Advantages: superior picture quality
Disadvantages: little pricy

...never noticed any problems with motion blur, etc. the Sony does a great job even without 100hz. Was initially hesitant about buying a LCD tv instead of Plasma, however, after comparing this with panasonic & samsung plasma tvs - I'd say the Sony wins hands down all the way !!! ...
