Introduction

Conventional CRT TVs are almost a thing of the past – the future belongs firmly to flat screen TVs. The sizes and colours of flat screen TVs available today are many and varied, but so too is the quality.

In general, there are two major product categories: LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and Plasma TVs.

As there are only a few small plasma TVs the choice between LCD and plasma only really becomes relevant if you are looking at a 37 inch or larger TV screen. While both systems offer a high image quality, potential buyers should consider the following issues before purchasing.

As with many things in life the choice of the right television depends on the way it is used. Where should it be placed? Do I want to enjoy movies at cinema quality or to play console games instead?

What’s my type? LCD or plasma?

LCDs work with liquid crystals. These create an image by breaking the light in a certain way. To avoid reflections and other interferences most devices are featured with matt fronts. Compared to plasma TVs colours are more luminous and provide brilliant colours even in bright rooms. However, many TVs have problems displaying a deep black, which can sometimes appear faded. In addition, most will only deliver a high quality image if the viewer sits directly in front of it. If you’re watching from more than a 45 degree visual angle (i.e. outside the principal axis of the TV) the contrast is reduced and the image can appear grey. This is a result of the LCD backlight format.

LCD TVs

Plasma devices were at the forefront of the flat screen movement. The technology is based upon ionised gas or plasma, which is illuminated through electronic impulses. The devices deliver true colours even outside the principal axis. As plasma has a very short response time it is perfectly suited for quick image changes such as sport broadcasts.

However, one problem with plasma TVs is the so-called burning-in or after image. Do you watch a lot of non-standard format videos (black bars) or play console games with static graphics? If this is the case, the overcharging of the light beams can sometimes burn a visible pattern into the TV screen. This can also occur through static TV station logos. This is much more unlikely with newer plasma models but the risk should still be taken into account.

It's a TV and a radio and a... The Logik 26" LCD

Advantages: Good screen and build quality. Brilliant value. Good array of input/outputs.
Disadvantages: Not a known brand, could be expensive to fix. Remote could be better.

...television can do everythig! Logik are not a well known brand, in fact Logik do not make the television at all. Rather, a manufacturer in Turkey sends these televisions to the UK for rebranding and can be found in Tesco and Aldi under the name of Technika or in Dixons, Currys.Digital and PC World under the name of Logik. Despite this though, they tend to beat the biggest brands on specifications and match on build quality although their styling is ...
...vibrant colours, very clearly. Brilliant. Logik have also provided two HDMI ports capable of taking a very high resolution signal from devices such as cameras, computers, DVD and Blu-Ray players and consoles. I must say that after rigging up my computer to it, it did a supberb job of displaying text and images with breathtaking pin-point clarity and vivid colours. A definite thumbs up. Sound quality is also very good with good bass and volume. On ...

Great TV great price

Advantages: Great price, excellent picture quality, HD compatible
Disadvantages: Analogue picture is appaling, no HDMI socket, ridiculous socket placing

I bought this TV when it first came out for £999 from Dixons, it was the cheapest LCD TV around and was immediatly impressed with it. The first thing that struck me is that the picture through the standard ariel is pretty pathetic, so if you haven't got a digital source ie freeview, sky or cable, don't bother as the picture is terrible, and the tuning system is ridiculous. But I then connected up my sky box, to the single scart socket on the back ...
...on the wall and then are inaccessible without removing it, as there are no front sockets on this TV) the picture changed to a excellent picture, no doubt this is due to the fact the TV is actually a rebadged Thompson TV. Picture was very clear. sound quality was pretty good, but not fantastic to be honest, but a bit of tweeking with the settings made it better. The remote is fairly bad and unresponsive, and the sky remotes don't have the code in ...

Don't Bother With This One Spend A Bit More

Advantages: Sound is ok
Disadvantages: Auful picture, slow channel change, poor build quality

I got this television about 12 months ago now and it came free with my wifes new mobile phone contract, thank god!! Had I actually paid good money for it I would have been very upset. We originally used it in the bedroom where it didn't get much use so really only started using about 3 months ago when we decorated our study and moved it in there. The picture quality is terrible and it is running through a set top box directly from a digital arial, ...
...and then wait about 5 seconds for it to change and then about 2 weeks ago a horizontal line appeared right across the screen about halfway down and its just out of warranty so we are stuck with it, unless we pay to have it looked at and we've only used it for about 3 months!! All in all I would recomend you not to bother with this model I recon its probably worth spending another £30 or £40 and getting a better make as you will get this extra money ...

LED TV is the Way Forward

Advantages: Great picture, ease of use.
Disadvantages: Quite Expensive

...a bit ugly or the Samsung LED TV. In the end I decided by just seeing them side by side and the decision made itself! Samsung was head and shoulders in the lead in my opinion! The TV itself is very sleek looking. It is only about 30mm thick and is black but has a beautiful red outline on the TV and stand. Once I got it out of the box I set about getting it all set up. Attaching the stand was no problem at all and within 10 minutes I was watching ...
...the TV to me was the connectivity it has. There are 4 HDMI ports which means that you can have upto 4 things plugged in at the same time for you to watch in glorious HD (in my case I have my XBOX, Blu-Ray player and Virgin Media). There is also USB connectivity so you can view pictures or play music through the television. The one thing to note is that, because of the slimness of the TV, there is no scart socket. Instead they give you a converter ...
