When we were looking for a solution to a slight problem - our old fridge/freezer halting its work, we decided to look for another of the same make. Because of some space contraints, we untimately decided upon a seperate fridge and freezer, which works out slightly more expensive, but involves more space for my precious precious food.
Firstly, a look at the company catalogue. The Lec brochure is chic and stylish, effectively advertising its products. This was very nearly wasted on us, however, beceause our old Lec fridge/freezer had been going strong for over 15 years before it finally gave out, and we trusted the company already. We decided on the L1205 fridge, on page 6, and ordered it from Apollo 2000, paying just under £140.
The
fridge arrived dead on time, and covered on all but the bottom side by a cardboard box, and some really hard to cut ties holding the package together. The reason there was no bottom side to the box is that once you've cut the tape, you can simply lift the box off, and theres your fridge - available without breaking a few backs trying to lift it out of a box (Reference to a slight problem we had with a TV a few years ago!).
The fridge itself is available only in white, which some may see as a drawback but suited us down to the ground, as we have a kitchen filled with white appliances. There is not really any setting up to do before it is put in place - we just clicked the bottom plastic door guard thing in place under the door, and slid the fridge off of its polysterene base. The instruction manual, catalogue, and a nifty drain unblocking tool are all taped up in a bag which is handily already inside the fridge, so you can throw all the packaging out straight away. Unless, like me, you needed the polysterene for some coursework. This fridge really was handy!
The fridge features:
- 2 safety glass shelves - a translucent salad drawer - reversable door - automatic defrost - wine rack (Or beer rack, in my case.)
The fridge was the perfect size to fit into an alcove under our worksurface, so we plugged it in (Not turning it on), and backed it into place. Inside there were still polysterene blocks there to stop the glass sliding around in transit, and tape holding down the egg holders and salad drawer, so I removed these. Now we were ready to go. Well, we would be tomorrow anyway, because it's recommended you leave the fridge stant for 24 hours before turning it on, to alow the coolant to settle.
The L1205W has a very modern and appliance-ey feeling to it, with its all bright white colour to it, theres really nothing else you could mistake it for. In many places, I am of the opinion it would look better in silver, as most things do, but it fits just fine into our colour scheme, and is not available in any other colours. It has some rounded edges which soften its appearance, and the handle to open the reversible door is ergonomically pleasing, with the correct depth so that it doesn't hurt your fingers if you yank the door open. The fridge has adjustable feet at the front, and you are supposed to angle it backwards everso slightly, so that the door shuts easier, but we found that our kitchen must be at an angle as it is, and it shuts just fine on the level.
There is plenty of space in the fridge, especially as there is only the two of us in my familly, but I think that if you live in a household that is that much larger, you would need a bigger space. Perhaps a three person household may be OK, but four would need something larger. The glass shelves are much nicer than the tacky wire in our last fridge, and the light is brighter and better position, to one side of the fridge.
The user guide that came with the fridge was most helpful, and we had no problems setting up, and this was just with me and my Mother (Although I did most of the work. Because I'm a special child. Ha). At just under £140, there are cheaper fridges on the market, but I think this was the best possible compromise for us, between price and functionality. Our last fridge by the same make lasted an exceptionally long time, so we are confident there will be few problems with this one. I'd recommend it.
Thanks
Ciao.

A detailed and interesting review - on a subject I think I'd struggle on. I hope the fridge continues to keep you and your food happy. It's be nice to think something bought today would also last 15 years, but you have to doubt it! Paul
