A couple of years ago a former colleague lent me a demo disc containing Lego Star Wars. A game based on the second trilogy by George Lucas encompassing Episodes I-III where the main protagonists are Lego people in a Lego world with Lego hands. Of course I thought this was going to be utterly crap...never in my life have I been so wrong.
After the successful demo I bought the game and became addicted. Imagine my joy when I found out they were to release Lego Stars Wars II: The Original Trilogy!!
Despite my excitement, I was at first unsure LSW2 was going to tackle that fact that the force is used much less in the original trilogy and was such a big part of the first game. This unease was soon cast away though as I swiftly found out that the levels were constructed for both non-force and force-using characters which needed the interaction of both sets of characters.
The story flows extremely well, and even though like the first game the plot has been re-written a little to accommodate the Legoness of it all it doesn't make a difference to how you perceive the films. Nothing is detrimental, if anything it adds to Star Wars franchise's charm by poking fun at itself on multiple levels - both adults and children can take different types of amusement from the game which in my opinion helps enrich the Star Wars experience.
The strange thing about it all is that it isn't strange at all! I feel completely adult about it when I am running about as Chewbacca pulling people's arms off with little popping noises accompanying my Lego GBH. I get completely dragged in, even though I know the story line inside out the game takes it even further. You go deeper into Dagobah, deeper down the hazardous alleys of Mos Eisley, smash up the cantina, and fly the Millenium Falcon yourself through an asteroid field. It's not Han Solo flying - its you!
The character selection is amazing. Every character you can think of from the original trilogy is here from the more famous names like R2D2, Darth Vader and Boba Fett to the more overlooked characters such as the Gamorrean Guards, The Snitch in a new hope and Gonk droids. And each one of them has their role to play in the game. If you want to complete the game 100% (there's a % counter to tell you how far you've gone through) you will need to revisit levels with different characters to gain access to certain areas. For example only bounty hunters can go down the back alleys of Mos Eisley, only Droids can open mechanical doors etc.
As well as the characters the level selection is great as well. You play through 3 episodes (IV, V, VI) with 6 levels in each. There are different types of levels such as the blast fest of the first level on board the rebel cruiser to the force fest on Dagobah and to Rogue Squadron's attack run on the Death Star - not forgetting the final level where you fly through the second Death Star as Lando Calrisian in the Millenium Falcon.
You need to revisit each level a good 5 or 6 times in order to complete every thing. In each level you need to find enough coins to fill the coin meter in 'story mode', a red Lego brick and 10 mini-kit satellites, and then you have to go back and refill the coin meter in a different play mode called 'free play'. This is where the massive list of characters comes into play as each one unlocks something extra to help complete the afore mentioned tasks.
You'll keep going back and going back and going back - and if you think it's going to be easy because its aimed at kids then think again. You'll get sucked in and begin to over analyse and tear away the level brick by brick until you catch yourself and think "Hang on, this IS aimed at kids" which brings you firmly back to earth with a thud and you restart the level with a clearer mind and more simple approach - which usually helps you think like a care-free 8-year-old and complete the game at 100%. you can play on your own or with a mate in co-op story mode or free play.
As well as the standard levels you have extras like 10 levels of bounty hunting for Jabba the Hutt in a shady little side room found in Mos Eisley cantina - taking you across the galaxy in search of outlaws for cash. Or you can just run about the game's cantina (where you access all levels) and blow stuff up collecting more coins and starting mass brawls indoors and outdoors. Also the bonuses and hidden levels make it worth while striving for 100%. I'm not going to spoil it except by saying...Star Wars visits Legoland and Unlimited Blue Coin Fountain :D OK so i did spoil it but it doesn't matter does it, because now you want to go off and find out what I mean!!
Get your kids this for Christmas and you'll be on it more than them! Not got kids? Neither have I. Get your missus (or fella) and pound away for hours at the levels instead of spending £50 in a pub. Don't like your missus or fella? Get a mate round, chuck your other-half out, get some Guinness open and play away. No mates? Play on your own! Look, just play it OK?
LUCASARTS are you listening? I wan't Lego Indiana Jones!

Review of Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy (PS2)
Advantages: Never-ending fun for all ages Disadvantages: none
After reviewing Lego Star Wars the video game, with some input from my little boy, he then asked me "why are you not writing about Lego Star Wars II? It's better…" Hmm…..Well that's his opinion and so here's mine…. Pretty much everything in this game is made of Lego bricks (sorry to state the obvious!) and just like the first game there is no spoken dialogue throughout the game, just gestures (even the most famous moments in the film.)
After the ... ...3 prequel films, and so Lego Star Wars II is based on the 3 sequel films, which are the originals (and best in my opinion) - The first of which is 'A new hope', the second is 'The Empire strikes back' and the third is 'Return of the Jedi'. Three awesome films! So after buying the game for my son I was itching to have a go, but if you've read my review of the first game you will know that I'm not so great at playing (to put it mildly!) And I haven't ...

Advantages: 2 player is great for a toddler and an adult! Not an annoying game! Disadvantages: Not enough info on the objects in the booklet, and thats it really!
...to make objects and collect lego blocks. It's fun for them both with lots of hidden treasures everywhere. It's not a really simple game I must admit, but on two player mode it is alot easier to get through the levels.
Only a few enemies to start gives an easy transition into the game and completely different levels keep you from getting bored. The difficulty increases as you get used to the gameplay and character qualities.
There is some degree ... ...quite amusing to pop their lego heads off.
You are able to go outside the cantina on the first part of the game to try out your new skills and collect some 'lego' to swap (like money) for special items. This gets you used to the gameplay and ready for the first main level. You can access all the different levels from the cantina, As you go along, you unlock different characters which follow you like a herd of sheep! They all have their own qualities ...

Advantages: A game for all the family, easy to use and easy to pick up Disadvantages: To be honest, I can't find any!!!
...of the films, while collecting Lego studs along the way, the more you collect the more extra features become available. The difficulty in the levels changs througout the game, with the ealry levels being easier teaching you along the way, progrssively getting harder. Graphics wise, there are absolutely no complaints never stuttering or jumping. Music and sound effects are deifinitely up there as well, containing real sounds and music from the films.

Advantages: Good Gameplay, 2 Player Mode, Fun for All Disadvantages: Highly Addictive!!!
Lego star wars 2 is a great game! The controls are very easy to learn and the game can be enjoyed by old and young alike!!! Obviously, everything is made out of lego bricks, this just adds to the humour of the game because what child hasn't destroyed a lego building before and seen all the bits collapse and make a profound mess? Well thats what happens in the game! If someone gets killed, they split into a bunch of lego bits and then re-incarnate! ... ...All the characters use gestures to convey meaning! This can be quite annoying or quite funny, depending on your outlook! Myself, and younger people of our household have all ejoyed this game, especially as it boasts an impressive 2 player story mode function! All children want to be able to play their favourite game with there siblings or friends!!! ...

Advantages: Simple, fun to play and highly addictive game! Disadvantages: If you don't like star wars or lego, you won't like it.
Star Wars lego II continues on along the strong gaming path of the original Star Wars lelgo game. It's one of those game you can just pick up and play, the controls are easy to understand and the games is set out in such a way that yuo know what you need to do from the start.
For the younger player you can simple pick up the controller and run around, if you die , you just re spawn, so there is no need to get frustrated.
For the older player there ...

LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy takes the fun and endless customization of LEGO and combines it with the epic story, characters and action from the original Star Wars movies that revolutionized pop culture forever (Episode IV A New Hope, Episode V The Empire Strikes Back and Episode VI Return of the Jedi). With a unique tongue-in-cheek take on the Original Trilogy, LEGO Star Wars II follows the Rebel Alliance's crusade to dismantle the Galactic Empire and rebuild a galaxy in pieces. Build and battle your way through your favorite film moments, from Darth Vader's pursuit of Princess Leia aboard her Blockade Runner to a showdown on the second Death Star, as the game includes even more of the family-friendly LEGO action, puzzles and humor that earned the original LEGO Star Wars such popularity and acclaim.
And much more new to offer, it still has. For the first time ever, characters can get in and out of vehicles, as well as ride creatures. You can also mix and match the body parts of more than 50 playable characters to create one of millions of possible LEGO Star Wars heroes. And on console and Windows platforms, a game save from the first LEGO Star Wars can unlock another 50-plus additional characters for Free Play - that's more than 100 total characters! Other exciting additions include free-roaming vehicle levels that are no longer on rails, the ability to switch ships at will in Free Play, cool new character-specific attacks and maneuvers, playable mini-kit vehicles, an optional adaptive difficulty mode and more.
Features:
Expands upon all of the fun and creativity that made the original LEGO Star Wars such a hit, this time set during the original three Star Wars films (Episodes IV, V, VI).
For the first time ever, build and ride vehicles (landspeeders, AT-STs, speeder bikes and more) and mount creatures (from the banthas of desert Tatooine to the tauntauns of frigid Hoth) through on-foot levels.
Now, all non-droid characters - not just those with the Force - have the power to build.
Unlock more than 50 playable characters, from cultural icons like Luke, Leia and Darth Vader to fan favorites such as Greedo, Jawas and Gamorrean guards.
Unlock up to 54 more playable characters with a game save from the original LEGO Star Wars (consoles/Windows).
Create unique playable characters like Yoda Kenobi, Lando Fortuna and millions more by mixing and matching the LEGO body parts of all playable characters.
In Free Play mode, experience the Original Trilogy in a new way by importing any character into land levels, or switch between vehicles at will in space levels. Make Darth Maul a hero of the Rebellion, or destroy the Death Star with a TIE fighter!
Character-specific attacks include Chewbacca pulling enemies' arms out of their sockets, Vader's Force choke, Leia's "slap" melee attack and many more.
