Over the years, and I mean YEARS, pretty much from year DOT of videogames; Star Wars has been a popular favourite. I remember as a child waiting for the fair to come to Portland so I could play the star wars Death Star Assault game; at the time this looked fantastic now it would be laughable. As the years went on different video games were released, some based on the movies others based on a world not yet created. The dilemma for myself as a game player was that each game lacked an area, if you were a JedI in any Star Wars game you'd certainly not be a pilot; and vice versa. With £15 spare, and a visit to a Game store, with little knowledge of the game I decided to Purchase Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy.
Having loaded the game into my PSP, and endured the rather lengthy loading and credit screens I was transported into the Cantina on Tatooine. I'm a bit of a silly bugger when it comes to games, I never read the booklets that come with the game because I'm bound to forget things when I get to certain parts. So I end up each time, hitting and hoping. Having done so,
and spent five minutes figuring out what I was supposed to do, I found a little alcove entitled Star Wars: A New Hope ( the name of the first, or if you want to be more accurate 3rd Star Wars movie). Like the movie your straight into the action, playing Princess Leia on a rebel councillor ship, trying desperately to avoid capture by Darth Vader. Everything is like the movies, with two exceptions 1) The characters are made of Lego 2) you need to assemble pieces of Lego in order to complete tasks (repairing panels, making vehicles). Having tried your hardest you are captured, and you go on to play different characters on the surface of the planet below. You seldom get to play one character, like the movie the characters are often in groups and you can change to be any other character in your group at any time. You literally get to be your favourite character whether its Han, Luke, Obi Wan or even Chewbacca.
The game continues with great speed, fight of Jawa's so you can get R2D2 back, uncover the message from Leia, find Han Solo, fly the Millenium Falcon, enter The Death Star, witness the demise of Obi Wan and escape before returning to destroy the Death Star. Its absolutely amazing, by the end of A New Hope I was sold on the game big time. In amongst the accurate to movie game play are some great comedy moments. Accidental miss fires might blow one of your colleagues limbs off, as can the odd slap. As you move around for those that love the sonic the hedgehog style games, there are a variety of different tokens painted silver, gold and blue. Collect as many of these for a better score at the end of each level. Also throughout the game are small components, try to collect 10 on each level to create a vehicle for later use.
It took me about 4 hours to complete A New Hope, then I moved on to Empire Strikes Back, again a similar situation fighting, flying, learning to be a JedI to a battle with Darth Vader. Again 4 hours and I was on to the next chapter. The longest to complete was Return Of The JedI, which took several hours. The nice thing is that the game throughout is more than just the sum of its parts; aside building, fighting and collecting parts, you need to really think about your actions. Moving blocks to a certain location can create far different results. Using different characters does the same, it was not till Empire Strikes Back that I realised R2D2 could fly and that Luke could jump far higher than any other character. This is a great game for kids, it will really get them thinking, as well as improve co-ordination when putting doing things in sequences.
Having taken about 15 hours to complete the three chapters I thought I was at the end, but this is not the case I have only completed 14 levels out of 99. There is more to this than meets the eye, but you need to get some things unlocked, and in order to do this you may need to go back and play some of the stories again, but don't think monotony, this time the play has varied slightly. And if your not ready to play again, why not explore the cantina and fight a favourite bad guy from the other three movies. Or better still find a friend with the same game, and a PSP to create a different game again, and work together to get the parts free you missed last time, unlock the levels, and see a new level of amusement.
Once you've got those levels unlocked you get to play a bigger game, and this game will take you above and beyond your expectations. Whatever the cost of this game, you'll be hard pushed to find a more compelling game that will have longevity such as this.
The game is rated clearly on the front as 10 out of 10 by numerous magazines and websites. This game is beyond 10 out of 10; I'd easily say it's the best PSP game I have now played, its got everything your likely to want or need.
The game is priced between £15 (second hand from Game stores) to £24.99 on websites the likes of Play.com. Wherever you buy it, you'll love it or if your too worried to admit playing it, your kids will

Sounds good, I think I am old fashioned to think I prefered my son playing with the lego bricks rather than all the games like this which he is addicted to now! Karen
