I think my son was a pretty late starter when it comes to video gaming . I bought a ps2 for the house in 2007 when my son was 6 years old and part of the deal was that I got to choose two free games with it.
...Knowing my son has a ton of lego which he plays with all the time! and Star Wars being WELL, Star Wars! I chose Lego Star Wars the video game as one of the games for my new family console.
Before that moment ,my son knew very little -if anything about star wars but that was about to change!
Now lets get to the game.
The game begins in Dexters Diner. Dexters Diners is where you begin the game each time you switch it on. Here you choose which episode you want to play a scene from, providing the door to the scene and episode has been unlocked.
You will see that there are 6 doors leading from Dexters Diner. 2 of the doors lead to a car park . The car park is where you will see vehicles you have gradually built during game play ,as you collect minikit canisters. I will talk about those more later.
There is 1 mystery door (it has a question mark over it)
Then we get to the most important doors of all in the game . These doors are marked - I,II,III. if you are a Star Wars fan you will probably realise that I,II and III stand for episodes I,II,III in the story / movies. Episode I The Phantom Menace, Episode II Attack of the Clones, Episode III Revenge of the Sith.
To start with you will be either Obi- Wan Kenobi or Qui-Gon Jinn,as those are the only characters that are unlocked to begin with. As you play scenes you will get to earn new characters or unlock characters to buy in Dexters Diner.
The first part you must play in is episode I and scene I, There
are 6 scenes in Ep. I but once you play scene I , you will unlock EP II, and Ep. III. You must complete scenes in order to open the next scene and so on. So if you play EP. I scene I you can either continue onto the next scene in that episode or do no.1 in episode II or no. 1 in Episode III. you have to at least walk through a whole scene in order to unlock the next scene. (even if you don't collect anything it will still unlock the next scene)
There are 5 scenes in ep. II and 6 scenes in ep III.
There are three main things you need to do throughout the game.
1. collect as many lego studs as possible in order to fill up the jedi meter ,once it is full in a scene it will save, you need to fill up a jedi meter in all scenes that you play.(you can return at anyttime to do this once the door is unlocked) 2. Collect 10 mini kit peices from each scene, in order to build vehicles which you will see in the car park of Dexters Diner. Some of the minikit peices are quite well hidden or need a specific character to get them, so you may have to come back later when you unlock the character you need. 3 . as well as collecting studs to fill up the jedi meter you need studs to purchase items and characters from dexters diner.
How to get lego studs. Basically you can just smash stuff with your light sabre using' X 'and 'Square' to jump and smash or you can use 'circle' to use the force.
If you tag a new character in a scene you are playing, you will earn that character once scene is completed. if you meet bad guys along the way they become available to purchase in Dexters Diner.
You can Purchase Extras in the Diner. From the silly things like disguise moustaches to the very useful ,like invincibility .The better the Extra the more expensive it will be ,as with characters as well.
This game is Excellent for both one and Two players .Player two can drop in or out at any point in the game, and so take part in as little or as much as they like without causing player one to have to re-start. This game works so well as a two player co-op game . As it is co-op both players share the one big screen so NO split screens . The drop in drop out feature is so useful for when player one gets stuck on a bit ,but just wants help and not to let someone else do it . You have to make sure you don't try to stray to far from each other otherwise player 2 gets kicked out and has to rejoin. So NO ARGUMENTS about which way you wanna go!
The game is quite short BUT it has long playability as you need to keep returning to scenes in order to collect all mini kits and jedi meters. Also as well a normal play mode , there is Free play mode . Free play is where you get to choose from your characters that are already unlocked, which one you would like to take into the episode. You will also get a selection of other character to go in with you . In free play you can switch between all the characters that are with you at anytime by pressing R1 or L1 to scroll through them .
During Normal play If one player mode you can switch between the two characters (your character and what would be player 2 ) by pressing 'triangle ' when near them.
If you want to take two particular characters in free play mode, you can tag one in the diner using 'triangle and then pick the other character before you go into the scene.
I really like the look of the whole game the colours are nice, and the detail is really good. I really like the look in ep 1 scene 2 where there is a section in water and the reflection of the water looks so good and all the stone work as well , that is just one example, it looks so cool.
The whole game is set to the music from the movies so a really good sound track sets the scene perfectly.
since my son started playing this game he has become the biggest star wars fan! He loves the music he has got ,and watched the movies so many times, and for the last 3 christmas's and birthdays it has been star wars star wars star wars.. he has not tired of it yet!!
Once you complete the whole game -played story mode/free play , filled ALL jedi meters collected ALL minikit canisters and purchased everything from the Diner the mystery door will unlock and you will get a nice little surprise .
The game is really quite easy overall, for kids and adults alike, but, that said, my son and I never got bored with the game and it was actually quite addictive. There are a couple of scenes/chapters where you get to fly , I found these a little trickier to navigate around and younger kids may need a little help on those bits from the Adult(Big Kid) or vice versa depending on who is the more experienced gamer of course!
Three years on after completing the game a few times my son and I still go back to it . I don't really play on it unless I'm playing it with my son as we have completed it but it is still fun .
The game is for age 3 plus, it is a really sweet game that would appeal to all ages especially star wars fans.It is a great family game as well or a good starter game for younger kids.
Lego has made quite a few hit games now . We bought lego star wars II: The Original Trilogy since, which was released after 'The Video Game'' That game contains ep.IV,V,VI and is just as good if not better. We have also got LEGO Indiana Jones and Lego Batman -My son absoloutely loves all of them we are just waiting to see what will come next from the Lego Games .
Lego seems so far ! a name to trust when it comes to good quality games in my house .
I think it may not appeal so much to hardcore games as it is probably a little tame for them but that said what do I know ??
Thanks for reading this far

Advantages: 2 player is great for a toddler and an adult! Not an annoying game! Disadvantages: Not enough info on the objects in the booklet, and thats it really!
