What do you do when your mobile phone starts going wrong? Buy a new one? Well you would think so wouldn't you - 6 months I have been waiting for my hubby to fulfil his promise and replace my ailing phone. Christmas came and went still no phone in sight, until last Saturday when he suddenly decided it was time to do something about it!

I don't use the phone very much (hence his lack of urgency). As a writer I spend most of my time at home, but do like the security of having a phone with me when out and about.

We trundled into town, he with a vision of picking up the cheapest pay-as-you-go he could find, me with a vision of a lovely sparkly new camera phone, this I thought, could be tough going.

Having toured all the shops, looked at the £29 Motorola in Woolworth's and the cheap Nokia phones he was getting desperate, would nothing please this woman.

We finally went back into the T Mobile shop to look (again) at their pay-as-you go phones (because I was insistent we didn't leave town without one, fearing another 6 month wait). He decided on the basic LG (no camera L ) but I stuck to my guns and told him I wanted a little fun in my life, I wanted a NICE phone and he relented.

We came away armed with the LG C2200. A sleek little flip phone, which is smart, fits easily into your pocket and is lightweight without feeling cheap.

It took no time to set up, the sim card and battery fitted within seconds and once it was charging I could sit and play to my hearts content. 5 minutes later I had called T Mobile (150) to set up my swipe card and put credit onto the phone.

Features I like:

It has a window on the front of the phone that tells you at a glance, the time, the signal strength, battery level, and what profile you are in, i.e. silent, car (for hands free), or headphone. When you get an incoming call the number, or if set up the caller details scroll across the screen telling you immediately who is calling.

The phone can be set up to answer as soon as you flip it open, or on key press. I decided that I would prefer the key press method, this gives the option of refusing calls if I wish.

Also on the front is the camera lense and a tiny silver disk, apparently for you to take self portraits with. It does actually work, point the camera at yourself, line your face up in the mirrored surface and you will get a perfect picture.

On the side of the phone is a volume up down toggle button. Extremely handy for adjusting the volume whilst talking - a feature my old Nokia did not have.

The Menu Screen is easy to navigate with the central arrow keys. Each section is defined by a picture, as you click on each one the text at the top of the screen tells you what it is for. When you open the phone it defaults to My Media where you can view your pictures, listen to your sounds and play games.

The Camera icon allows you to take photos, look at previous photos or set the camera to 'Take in modes' - seaside like pictures for you to use when taking photos. The pictures are clear and good quality.

The Settings Icon is what it says, allows you to put in date and time, and adjust internet, or phone settings to your own requirements.

The Contacts Icon is where your address book is. This is rather cool (or am I just not up to date?). On adding a new contact you can assign it to a group (family, work etc,) and you can add a picture of the person (once you have taken one that is) so each time they ring their number and their picture will be displayed on your phone. Quite a nice idea I thought. You can also store several numbers under one name, i.e. mobile, office, home - saving the necessity for having the same person in your phone three or four times.

Other Icons on the main screen are Settings, T Zones, Profiles, SMS messaging (text), organiser (alarm clock and scheduler), tools and Interactive. Each have their own menu and can be set to your own preferences.

In general:

The ring tones that come with the phone are a little disappointing but then it's not a top of the range phone. You can change background colours etc., to your own liking, and can set up different sounds for keyboard, message receipt etc., but that's pretty standard stuff nowadays.

The overall look of the phone is good, it's sleek without being too small, the keypad is workable (some are ridiculously small) and the sound levels are good. The reception is perfectly clear and the phone feels nice and is easy to use.

The Bonus:

10 minutes after telephoning T Mobile I received a text telling me I had 1000 free text messages. Why I got them I don't know, there was nothing in the paperwork but hey, I'm not about to argue so now I'm having great fun and driving everyone mad with text messages.

All in all I like my phone, it has brought me up to the 21st century and I am no longer ashamed to answer the phone when out in public.

Cost: £79.95 from T Mobile - a reasonable price for a smart phone that does everything you want it to do.

A really good review for someone wanting a phone for all the reasons you do but not quite enough for the feature-obsessed like me :-s It sounds good for your needs though, and the price!
