Advantages Decent picture quality

Disadvantages Bulky machine, no S-vid connection, price

The first impressions that I got when lifting this out of the box it arrived in, was that LG had gome for functionality over looks. This may be a good or bad thing, depending on what you're after, I suppose.

The actual machine is rather bulky, not the smallest player on the world. The front of the player is divided into two clear sections, the silver top half, with the DVD tray and the VHS slot, and the bottom half is the black strip, that contains a multitude of silver buttons, and the display. The machine somehow felt flimsily built, so I don't think the build quality is great.

One thing that I immediately noticed when peering round the back of this machine, two scart sockets. Great, you can never have too many scart sockets. Another thing I noticed soo after, where's the S-Video socket? I looked round the back, round the front, nothing. Therefor if you're wanting to use this device with your camcorder or other external video source, you're limited to either scart, or composite in. Not good. Also round the back you've got your bog standard RF in/out, some analogue sockets, etc. The usual.

Round the front there's the buttons as mentioned earlier, and your composite video in, along with the left/right phono jacks, for audio in.

Nothing particurly special so far, but things improve when you turn the machine on. LG are known for their visual quality and this machine is no exception. The image quality is excellent, both the vividness of the colours and the image detail are more than satisfactory. The video function has a somewhat nifty function that allows you to record from DVD to VHS. Please note that this will only work with older DVDs that are encoded without the copy protection facility implimented nowdays called Macrovision. Or of course, it'll work with DVDs that you've created yourself. The quality of VHS playback is ok as far as VHS quality goes, but it's nothing to brag about.

Overall a great machine, but possibly a bit pricey, weighing in at a rather large 250 pounds.
