In true Christmas tradition I was in Tesco on Christmas Eve doing some first and last minute shopping. Essentials were already in the trolley: wine, whisky, vodka, gin, fizzy stuff and some orange juice for the Bucks Fizz.

Time to look round the boring bits of the store, endeavour can be rewarded and it was in this case because I came across an LG 4210 DVD player complete with twenty movies for the cost of £199.99. Who could be worthy of such a gift in such a large box, (always the most exciting to open!)? Why me of course.

Time to rush home rip open the box throw away the 40-page manual and set the machine up, (is this a man thing?) The DVD player is a sleek silver model weighing 3 kgs measuring approximately 43 cms by 15 cms by 7.5 cms the actual dimensions may be in the manual but I don’t know where this is. The player can also be used to play audio CD discs but it does not play CDR discs, this is not a function that really bothers me.

A 21-pin scart plug is included so it’s a simple matter of connecting the player to the television and you’re off. There are other connections on the rear panel to connect the player to your television or hi-fi or surround sound speakers with Dolby Digital Sound or indeed Dolby Pro Logic Surround Sound.

A real plus is that the remote control comes complete with batteries so there’s no messing about robbing other remotes for batteries. The remote control is simple to use and the functions are easy to follow, the most strenuous part of playing a movie is having to stand up and place a disc into the machine. As one would expect you can exercise all aspects of playback through the remote control, normal play, slow motion, freeze frame, skip chapters, zoom in, select subtitles, change language and so on. There is also a rating level and password features, which can allow parents to regulate movies or indeed scenes they might deem unsuitable for their children.

The LG4210 is listed as region 2 player therefore you are in theory limited to watching films for this region. I would imagine five minutes on the Internet one could find a code to convert this player to other regions.

So there you have it, a simple to use DVD Player, it may not have the bells and whistles of more expensive players but it does want I want it to do. Of course there is a twelve-month guarantee supplied.

Oh yes, I did say it came with 20 movies, they are a pretty eclectic bunch but you can always give them as Christmas presents.
