The product has provided me with excellent service. It has never played up yet (had it for 6 months), and it has an excellent data transfer rate (I use it with a Firewire cable.)
When using Windows XP Home, it installed straight away and was ready to use once I pulgged it in. I didn't need to install the drivers that came on the CD. It came up in My Computer and assigned itself a drive letter.
Also on the CD is Nero Express 6 (Im pretty sure it's version 6). Maybe this is it's only drawback. I think a more powerful version of Nero would be better (not that Nero Express isn't better than most DVD/CD writing programs.)
It can record on to any type of blank DVD or CD including Doble Layer (this means it has the capacity space of a full Hollywood DVD).
It is 12x writing speed (for DVD) - which is the fastest Ive seen and it has a 24x CD writing speed (the average music CD can be written in about 5 minutes (my own approximation!)).
It has a USB and Firewire ports. It is much better on the Firewire and wouldn't have bought this if I only had USB, however, if in an emergency you need to record a DVD on an old computer that doesn't have a DVD writer or firewire, the USB is better than nothing!
Another nice thing is it actually has TWO firewire ports. You plug one of the ports into your computer's firewire and then the other port is left to plug in other devices!
For example: my laptop only has one firewire port. I am a Digital Video Editor and I quite often need the DVD drive plugged in AND my DV player (like a video player) at the same time.
So I plug the DVD drive into the laptop and then plug the DV Player into the DVD drive! It effectively adds another firewire port to your computer!
The device comes with a USB lead and two firewire leads. 1x 6-pin to 4-pin and 1x 6-pin to 6-pin.
The device looks very stylish (in a style a bit like a white Apple computer)!)
