I’ve never been all that fussed when it comes to mobile phones really. As long as it’s presentable, has internet access and isn’t the size of a brick, then I generally don’t mind what make it is. Over the years, I’ve tried Nokia, Motorola, Samsung, Sendo, an O2x4 and, most recently, a Sony Ericcson. Generally these have been rush purchases made when I’ve lost or broke the previous one and have wanted a new one in a hurry. Most recently, my choice was usually limited to whatever O2 pay as you go mobile was most readily available in Argos (I had an O2 sim card with free texts I wanted to keep). But I had been considering getting a contract phone for quite some time as I spend waaayyyy too much money on calling credit due to the fact I am completely text-obsessed - I was spending around 250 quid every three months on top of the 300 free texts I was receiving every month so it was definitely getting a bit ridiculous.

So when I finally decided to go for the contract thing, I finally decided it was about time I actually went for a phone that I REALLY wanted. No choosing one just cos it was the cheapest in the catalogue. This time I might be able to get one that was a bit cooler, a bit flasher, a bit more ME. I was originally going to go for the LG Shine, but then I noticed the LG Prada and, like Sarah Jessica Parker says in her new really annoying perfume ad, “I had to have it”.

The first reason was because of the fact it was a designer phone. I could not consider myself in any way a label queen, but the idea of owning something designer, especially a phone, was a real draw for me. Secondly it LOOKS cool - black, slim line, extremely lightweight, shiny and classy. The fact it had a half-decent camera (my last phone had a crap camera that made everyone I took a picture of look like they were appearing on “Most Haunted“) and MP3 player. But the REAL seller was the fact it was touch screen. I had no idea how easy it would be to use, but it just sounded really modern and, to be honest, I just kept thinking “for once, people will be jealous of my phone”. Shallow? Perhaps. True? Definitely.

So now that I’ve been the proud owner (and best friend) of this phone for over a week, what’s my verdict? Well, I’ve decided to go through the main things I look for in a phone and see how well it matches my needs in order to provide you with the most relevant information I feel you might need. I’ve basically already covered appearance in my introduction but I will add that in terms of this factor, I will give it a mark of ten out of ten. I would give it more if I could!!!

*****TEXTING*****

As I am a bit of a text expert (textpert?) and probably send on average about thirty texts a day (although it’s probably significantly less now me and my boyf, who I texted most, have split and he doesn’t contact me anymore), the text function on a phone is definitely the most important thing for me. And, to be honest, I have only really now began to get the hang of texting on a touch screen phone, so it has definitely taken me a few days to master it. The touch screen on the phone has exactly the same keys you would have on a standard mobile so you are still pressing exactly the same “buttons” as you would be normally, but the fact you can’t actually FEEL the buttons is slightly offputting in my opinion, as sometimes you perhaps haven’t pressed the right “button” properly and end up with a completely different word. I’ve also ONLY JUST worked out how to change the word on predictive text (I temporarily misplaced the user manual) but surprisingly it was my technophobe sis who actually figured it out for me. So thankfully if I try to text my mate amy I won’t be accidentally calling her “cow” anymore…

In addition, in terms of storage the phone will store up to 300 text messages, which is always a good thing if you are like me and either like to horde nice texts, or if you just forget to delete all your texts until you’re prompted to.

So for ease of texting I can’t give it full marks but I think texting on a new phone is usually a bit of a trial at first, and I AM getting used to it now so I certainly can’t fault it.

Marks out of ten - 7 1/2(but I’m sure my mark will improve once I’m text perfect again!)

***** CALLING *****

I’m more of a texter than a caller, but obviously now I have 500 (or is it 600?) free mins a month on my contract I’ve been trying to make the most of it, much to the amazement of my family and friends who had almost forgotten what my actual voice sounded like.

The last three phones I have owned have been flip phones which I do find easier to talk on - probably since you can have the earpiece at your ear and still have the mouthpiece speaker at your mouth. I don’t feel like this is the case with this phone - when I’ve been having long conversations no one seems to have a problem, but in the last two days I have phoned both Dominos and a taxi firm and both claimed to be having problems hearing me, so it’s not my ideal situation - I hate people who SHOUT ON THEIR PHONES, and I certainly don’t want to be one of them!!!

Marks out of ten - 7

*****NAVIGATION*****

I prefer my phone to be as easy to use as possible, able to access all the functions I need at the touch of a button. The LG Prada is pretty good for this, although it may be worth having a look at the user’s manual to familiarise yourself with where everything is. Once you know, though, everything is easily found again. And it all seems so much EASIER than with a normal phone, due to the handy little symbols they use and, of course, the touch screen!

The one thing I DO have a bit of difficulty with at times is the address book, as sometimes I find myself scrolling down too far when trying to find a contact, but that may just be due to my clumsy fingers I suppose!!!

Marks out of ten - 8

*****INTERNET ACCESS*****

If I’m watching a film or something and someone says to me “who’s that actor? He looks familiar, what’s he been in before?” I’m a bad one for immediately going onto the phone in my internet and googling, imdb’ing, or wikiepedia’ing whoever it is, therefore internet access on my phone is pretty important to me - it’s instant knowledge right at my fingertips, you know!!! I always like knowing the answers to questions people ask…

I was HOPING that the internet access would be superior on the LG Prada due to the touch screen, I was even hoping it would look more like internet access on a pc screen. If I’d read the reviews on ciao of the phone PRIOR to purchasing it, I may have known this - unfortunately I didn’t. The internet access is pretty much the same as the screen you would get on any other phone - IN FACT, I would say the net access has actually been SUPERIOR on my last two phones. Still, it’s user-friendly all the same, if you can ignore the fact they could have made it so much better and presumably, with the cutting edge technology they have clearly used to make this phone, they had the tools and the opportunity to do so, and simply chose not to bother. Which is pretty sad.

Marks out of ten - 6

*****EXTRAS*****

My last phone was a Sony Ericsson and it was a bit of a disappointment, as it had shit memory, a crap camera and, although it had an mp3 player, it didn’t even supply you with a usb cable for it, so any songs I had on my phone had to be blue toothed to me by my friends.

The extras with this phone are soooo much better. For one thing, the phone AND the extras come in a lovely Prada box - very swanky!!! I was impressed enough with that, but that wasn’t all. Because you also get a lovely leather Prada case to put your phone in,. a LCD cleaning cloth (which ALSO has the prada label on it!!!), a charger (of course!), a USB cable and CD to hook the phone up to your PC, and a combination hands-free/headphones set, as well as an SD memory card.

Marks out of ten - 10

*****GAMES*****

Games on phones aren’t all that important to me since I know nowadays you can always download them if the built in ones suck. Which is a good thing in this case, since the ones that come with this phone are your bog-standard type really - ie ones you wouldn’t waste your time playing. Virus is the only one which is remotely good and is strangely addictive, despite being really quite boring - like tetris, or solitaire or something like that. It’s main appeal is the fact that you don’t need to learn all these complicated manoeuvres with the buttons - you just hit the screen with your finger. No brain power involved really, just good hand-to-eye coordination! Result!!!

Marks out of ten - 5

*****SOUNDS*****

The ringtone options are pretty rubbish compared to the majority of phones out there, but you can download MP3s and use these as your ringtones, so this is easily remedied. However, it doesn’t seem to be possible to download new text message alert tones, which is pretty pants as there is only four options for these and none of them are that great. I would prefer just a one bleep tone or something like that - so you can hear you have a message but not disrupt anyone around you!

Marks out of ten - 6 (only because of the ability to download or use mp3s as ringtones)

*****MULTIMEDIA*****

The phone has a camera, camcorder function, voice recorder, MP3 player and an FM radio (although the headset must be plugged in to use this as it acts as an aerial to pick up the signal). All in all I think it is pretty cool to get all these inside your phone, especially since they all appear to be really good quality. I’ve been loving the fact I can download my pics from the phone onto my bebo page, after ages of relying on other people to post pics from nights out so I could steal them! And they transfer to my pc easily with the use of the USB cable and CD, so I can’t even complaint about that. The only other function I’ve used so far is the MP3 player, on which I’ve transferred a couple of tunes onto so I can use them as ringtones if I wish. I have a Sony Walkman anyway, so the quality of the mp3 player on my phone isn’t hugely important to me, but it is actually very good, and sounds far superior to several dedicated mp3 players I have owned in the past.

Marks out of ten - 9

*****BATTERY*****

This also seems pretty standard, because I do text a lot, I think my charge tends to run out fast anyway, but even then it will probably last me about two full days provided I’ve charged it fully. Even when it tells you the battery is empty it still continues to go for a while - luckily!!! But I have definitely owned phones in the past with a longer battery life than this one.

Marks out of ten - 7

*****PRICE*****

Unfortunately, this is not ideal, the price is pretty high if you are buying it pay as you go. However, if you choose to opt for a contract you can get some pretty good deals on it. I got mine from the O2 website for £19.99 on a £35 a month contract, which seemed fairly reasonable to me. But I would probably avoid it if you have a prepay phone, as it is just going to be a huge amount of money to spend on a phone you might not necessarily like (although it looks fab in your hand!).

Marks out of ten - 5

CONCLUSION

All in all, I’d say this phone is fantastic, and I love it to bits. But it definitely LOOKS better than it actually functions. But then given how fantastic it looks, that wouldn’t be hard I suppose. I do feel like LG do have the technology to improve any problems with this phone and it’s a shame they didn’t perhaps put a little more work into it. But all in all the functions provided in this phone are better than average, I certainly can’t fault the camera or mp3 player, I’m gradually getting used to the difference in texting on a touch screen versus texting on a standard phone, and let’s face it, when I have this little gem of a phone in my hand, I feel like a million bucks.
