I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I don't like phones. I don't like the interruption, I don't like the costs, and I don't like having to talk to someone I can't see. However, it seems I am alone in this, and the whole rest of the world loves them.
One thing I DO like however is experiences. Those one off moments, those first times, those "just because" features. And let me tell you, owning "Chocolate" is an experience.
I decided a new phone was necessary once my old one (A Siemans SF 65 which I reviewed previously) finally gave up the ghost. Having chosen a phone based on style over substance before, I was insistent I would not do so again. I considered a number of "work horse" phones, including a number of old ones laying around the house before I first saw the LG Chocolate. From that very first moment I was smitten. It's dashing good looks had won me over, and once again, I was destined to buy a "fashion" phone. Thankfully this time, the choice was a good one.
The phone does everything I could want from a phone, and then some, and looks oh so good doing it.
The chocolate experience starts even before you get the phone in your hand. After unpacking the ugly brown shipping box which the mobile network sent it in, I was presented with a beautiful, textured black, chequer-board "Chocolate" box. The thing feels, well quality. Right from that moment you know you are now the proud owner of something just a little bit special.
After removing the slip sleeve, you are presented with the LG logo, and ubiquitous "Life's Good" slogan. This alone is one of the phones many "Experiences" which I enjoy so much. Once you are done admiring and feeling the wonderful packaging, and finally open the magnetically sealed latch at the front, you first see the phone... or rather, the phone's cloth bag. Open this and you reach the phone within, and it is then that you realise this is something more than just a little bit special. At either side of the phone (which is at the very centre of the box) are the wealth of accessories that ship with the phone (we'll get to these later).
It is only once you insert the SIM card, attach the battery, and give it it's first charge... a process which can't go fast enough... and switch on the phone, that the fun really starts.
First and foremost, the phone is a truly marvellous phone. The touch sensitive front buttons illuminate once the phone is slid open and work wonderfully, the number pad buttons are big, tactile and responsive, and alternate between matte and shinny black for a subtle, yet immensely pleasing chequer-board effect. The sound quality is tremendous when both sending and receiving calls, the menu's and inputs are equally great to use too. All in all, the phone is a great phone, in the truest sense of the word. It makes and receives calls well, and is a joy to use when doing it.
But that is just the start.
It seems to be some kind of unwritten law that you are forced to choose between form and function. However, as an Macintosh user I have to admit I have become accustomed to having my cake (or Apple) and eating it. With this phone LG seems to have learned a thing or two from the Cupertino Manufacturer, offering a phone that is both stylish and functional.
The LG KG800 includes all the extras which have become standard fare amongst phones of this type. And, while I doubt I will find much use in most of these features (I want my phone to make calls and send texts, I have a camera for photo's and an iPod for Music) Most users will be pleasantly surprised.
The phone includes a 1.3 Megapixel Camera, with flash and video functions. While the camera barely competes shot for shot with a dedicated stills camera, even one at 1.3 megapixel (the lowest of the low amongst cameras nowadays), the shots are very good looking on the phone's bright, colourful, 256k colour screen and provides very adequate shot's when transferred to computer when compared to other phone cameras, assuming you are not looking to win any photography awards.
The phone also includes a "Music Player" which supports MP3, unprotected AAC (as well as AAC+ & ++), and unprotected WMA. The files can be used as ring-tones, and played over the phone's built in speaker, or over the included hands free kit headphones. Over the speaker, the sound is certainly adequate, though not as loud as Sony's recent Walkman phones, and will easily become lost in loud settings. Over headphones however, the sound excels. The included headphones are very good quality for earbuds, and I would definitely use them on my iPod if not for the very short cable, however, the real beauty of this phone is that the headphones attach to the combined hands free microphone/wired remote via a standard 1/8th inch phono jack plug, so any type of headphones can be used to listen to your music.
Finally, the phone includes a whole bunch of useful app's, including downloadable JAVA games and software, basic memo functionality, .TXT file reader, and a calendar that wouldn't seem out of place on some smart phones... Sadly, for me, 90% of this functionality will go unused.
And then, there are all those extras. Included in the box is not only the phone, the cloth carrying , bag, and hands free kit/wired remote which I have mentioned but also a USB data cable, which is in no way a given these days, syncing software (sadly, only for windows) and manuals, and charger. And then there is the thumb fob for cleaning the screen, which is great, because the phone picks up fingerprints and other grime easily.
The USB cable works without any software, and the phone will appear as a USB hard disc for uploading and downloading images, mp3's and text files to the phone. Here we find one of the phone's few flaws. The included 128mb internal memory will be filled after only about 40 tracks or a few hundred highest res Images, and there is no way to upgrade this. In some ways this is a blessing in disguise, as the phone really excels as a phone and a beautiful one, and the added bulk of a chip reader, and the extra slot it would require would detract from the phone's beauty, but it will inevitably bug some people.
Sadly, the phone provides no apple isync support, but between the data cable and bluetooth, this isn't TOO big a problem, though you will be left imputing people's numbers manually on a mac, as even with Virtual PC I could not even make it work.
The phone is of course, not without fault. The battery is particularly problematic. while even the heaviest users will easily make it through a full day on a full charge, a second day, for heavy users, is not a given. Even for me, light user that I am, I have found myself recharging ever night, just to be safe. And while it is not a particularly difficult habit to get into, it is not what most are used to, and could prove a big problem on, say for example, a weekend camping.
Also, I have heard of problems receiving calls while using bluetooth hands free kits and headsets, but I do not have one to test so I can't comment.
Finally, as far as problems go, the touch sensitive pad takes a little getting used to, as there is no feedback, beyond what happens on screen, and more than once you will find yourself scrambling to end a call you didn't intend to make, cause you accidentally tapped the send call button with your thumb. Some have also reported them being unresponsive in camera mode. Also, though big and tactile, speed texters like my sister have found the number keypad a little unresponsive while texting, though again I can't comment, as my text abilities can only be described as anaemic.
A number of problems I perceived have proven to be non issues. I expected for the heat sensitive touch buttons to become unresponsive on hot days, however, after the hottest stretch i can remember, this has not been the case. And of course, like the iPod and Sony PSP it has a glass like finish, and I expected it to be susceptible to scratches, however, thankfully, this is also not a problem.
There is one other thing worth mentioning here. The phone, while technically gender neutral, could also be described as "gender confused". Let me explain. The phone doesn't really know if it is a guys phone or a girls phone, and tries a little to be both, as opposed to neither. Still confused? Well, let's put it this way. There will be people, of both sexes, who look at this phone and see a phone targeted at the opposite sex. My mom, for example looked at it, saw it's shape, colour, menu's and minimalist design and said "It's really nice, but it definitely is a guy's phone isn't it", and this reaction is somewhat typical of what I have been hearing from girls. On the flip side, I showed it to a number of guys, who saw it's packaging, size and weight (it is only 93 grams or so), it's cloth bag (complete with silk looking strings and metal tassels), it's screen cleaning fob and it's features (clothing size convertor for example) and were like "It's really nice, but a little feminine for my liking". All in all this isn't really a problem, but will likely not appeal to manly men, or girly girls.
But these problems are really minor. After all, the people most likely to buy this phone will not be people who want "smart phones" or who want feature rich phones, it is a phone for minimalist, post-modern twenty-somethings of either sex. People like that will love it.
I liken it to a Lotus (car, not flower that is). The car may not have all the features of a BMW, or all the horsepower of a Ferrari, but the thing looks good enough to make up for it, and is hardly a lightweight in features or horsepower to boot.
All in all, this phone is a joy to recommend to people who enjoy the finer things, who appreciate design, love those experiences, and need a phone which will compete with most phones out there. There is one problem. The first few times you pull out this phone, you will instantly become the centre of attention - Wallflower's need not apply.

...in the shape of an LG chocolate.. Very cute and sweet looking phone, and not too bad on features considering the small price..!
A few days seems like a life time when you have a dead phone, a partially dead phone and you are slightly excited to get something new..! I'm somewhat of a lover of mobile phones.. I think I've had more mobile phones in the past 8 years of my life than most of my friends..! So, why did I choose the KG800?
Well for ... ...box, which inside held the LG box with my phone in..! The actual company box.. The top and bottom of the box had all the details about IMEI numbers are barcodes, everything that the manufacturers provide to get the phone going..!

Advantages: attractive design, small enough to fit in pocket, good mp3 player Disadvantages: can take a while to get used to
Ever since the Chocolate LG was released and I saw the first adverts I knew I wanted this phone. At a price tag of over £200 though I decided that I'd wait a while and buy one when they got a bit cheaper. But the situation arose last week where my friend was selling hers as she didn't like it and I jumped at the opportunity and bought it off her for £80 - she bought it for £180!
So here is my review of this delicious phone…
The Look
-----------
... ...easy to text - the LG has the predictive text feature as well as the keypress. The buttons aren't raised making it hard to know if you've actually pressed it or not. It does take me a bit longer to text now but I suppose it'll get better with time.
The large screen will also hold up to 8 lines of text making it easy to read a text in one go.
Camera
---------
Not one of the best camera I've seen but it does generally take clear pictures of a good ...

...to have been given the LG Chocolate KG800 at Christmas last year from my parents. You can get them for around 100 pounds depending on where you shop!
I was actually pretty scared when I saw the light up 'buttons and the slide function! As I said... my old phone was a brick! This phone however is very sleek, slim and really does look fantastic. I am aware that the phone is available in black or pink - I own the black version.

These functions I've found are pretty good and when you slide the front section of your phone up and look at the back you will find your little camera!

...really easy. Using the LG software is not for the faint hearted. There are no instructions provided. To get it to work you have to enable the modem on the phone before you connect and make sure you have installed modem drivers on the PC. What you eventually get is pretty basic contact synchronization software, plus software for adding extra wallpapers and ringtones to the phone. Also some internet connectivity software which I've had a quick look ... ...alone. Bluetooth
Have only used bluetooth for connecting to other phones, this worked fine. Haven't tried it with a headset.
The Internet
I tried using the internet just to see if it worked. It did work, but it's not for me - a bit too fiddly, for me, better left to a computer and full size monitor, methinks.
Battery Life
Upon first using the phone it was sucking the battery dry in an alarmingly quick time (few hours). However, in subsequent ...

...- George, so suave!). The LG Chocolate really is as beautiful as its adverts, and its slimline design is a definite advantage, but the touchpad is nearly always oversensitive and can drive you nuts as you will be regularly finding yourself in the wrong menu. There are also 2 keys on either side of the phone (power on/off, volume etc) exactly where you need to grip it and it is frustratingly easy to wipe out text messages, hang up on people by mistake, ... ...should be warned that the LG charger adheres to the Chocolate's whole slimline aesthetic and there'll be few chances to borrow batteries and chargers in emergencies. Your LG can become incapacitated alarmingly quickly by doing what it is designed for.
The web browser, oddly, seems to require less power and can be used for much longer. The web capabilities are not out of the ordinary but are very good for moderate use (e.g. I use mine constantly ...

Advantages: snazzy and chic looking, easy to use, lightweight, and on and on Disadvantages: the only one I can see is it definately a womans phone
...I have had my Chocolatelgkg800 for around 3 months now and can say wholeheartedly I love it. I was never a lover of slide phones before as I thought they would be too fiddly mucking around with it all the time but I have to say with this I have been converted.
I would definately say that it is a phone designed for women as my husband who has large hands cannot use the touch screen part of the phone as he ends up usually trying to connect to the net!!
I have the black coloured phone and yes it looks amazing, especially when the touch pad lights up and the menu, arrows and little phones light up red. It does however get smudged and grubby looking quickly especially if you have lots of sticky fingers floating around like me!!
It is sleek and compact in design and isn't a heavy phone, I'm going to put all the specs at the end...

First Impressions
When the KG800 package arrived, it‘s shape and size was easily mistaken for a shoe box. Its actual design is well presented and quite minimalistic. It tells you about the various features the phone offers and on the other side has the phones‘ design and "chocolate" logo in large print. The inside of the box was decorated with the same small diagonal pattern as the exterior, but in red, which looks nice and bold. The package includes the phone, battery, ear phones, wired remote, screen cleaner, case, a quick start guide, manual, USB to PC cable...
