As I seem to sit at a computer screen all day I thought it wise to invest in a nice flat screen monitor - mostly this was to help stop my eyes deteriorating which, I understand, is mostly caused by the flickering of standard CRT monitors. My new TFT had to meet the following criteria:
- 15" or more visible screen - Display resolution of 1024 x 768 or more (preferably 1280 x 1024) - Have a decent display for playing PC games which are pretty fast paced - Fit in the corner against the wall on my desk - Cost less than £200
I had a look through the ol' Argos catalogue and this one caught my eye. It was small enough to fit on my desk nicely, had a 17" visible screen and a native resolution of 1280 x 1024 and cost £30 less than my planned budget - brilliant I thought. 20 minutes drive and £170 later the screen was mine.
I also like the fact that it doesn't have built in speakers. Other monitors I have seen have very poor speakers which I do not want or need due to having a 5.1 surround sound system.
The screen was easy to set up (just plug it in and switch on) and was proudly tucked up in the corner displaying pictures within 15 minutes on getting home (it took me 10 minutes to find some scissors to fight through the box sellotape!)
As I say, the screen was pretty much perfect out the box for my uses, but if you need to change any settings, the menus are easy to navigate using the buttons on the front. If you get into any problems these can be easily reset to factory defaults if needed. I ended up increasing the brightness slightly and, without ever using the menu's before, managed to quickly find what I wanted and altered the setting to suit my needs.
Since then, it has been burning away for hours and hours and shows no sign of deterioration. I am able to watch whole DVD's from a good 7ft away and it is still plenty clear enough even from that far. It is also able to let me sit for hours right in front of it as I play computer games without too much trouble for my eyes (of course sitting in front of a screen for a long time is not good for them!). Normal computer work, such as typing, browsing the internet etc, are also easily accomplished and I never need to strain to see any of the words.
One minor problem is that if you need to view the screen at an angle the definition quickly decreases but this is very common with flat screens so isn't something I'm particularly bothered about. Also, it is extremely uncommon for me to not look at it from directly ahead, so again this isn't really a problem.
In summary, I would highly recommend this monitor to anyone needing to replace their current screen. The colour is excellent and images nice and sharp, and best of all the price is right!
