Advantages: Great picture and sound quality and easy to use. Disadvantages: None really.
I have not owned a video recorder for over two years but have instead gone through three cheap DVDrecorders, having wasted money on three cheap ones I decided to spend a bit more this time and went out and bought myself a good DVDrecorder.
The recorder of choice this time was the LGRHT497H, I purchased this about four weeks ago for a little over £180 and have so far enjoyed using it and the picture quality it serves up is excellent.
I should probably give a mention to the TV I have it attached to before I go much further just so as you know exactly what I am using and then you do not expect the same picture quality from a 14 inch CRT portable. My TV is a Samsung next generation 63 inch crystal plasma and when combined with this DVD player/recorder the outcome is very, very good.

Advantages: It's a Sony, fully compatible with existing kit and buckets of features Disadvantages: Not as cheap as third party units
The Sony RDR-HXD995 is a combined DVD and hard disk recorder with built in analogue and freeview tuners with analogue and digital outputs.
It could be seen as providing the same functionality of several ?set top boxes? namely a freeview receiver, DVD player/recorder (as well as supporting Audio CD) and a Hard Disk recorder ? giving essentially the same functionality as a VCR machine.
The main advantage of such a system is that it greatly simplifies wiring it all up to your TV set, as well as providing a much neater package, and of course, works from a single remote control.
Additional benefits include support for USB devices, allowing audio and picture files to be transferred from mp3 players, cameras etc, as well as letting you print directly to a ?pict bridge? printer, obviating the need for a computer.

I've had one of these for just over a year now and lets just say it has been... problematic. First the good points (yes there are some!)
It will record on DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW discs and play DivX, VCD's and MP3/WMA files and also view JPEG images, in fact pretty much anything you can throw at it. Also has component output so if you have a HD television you can take advantage of it's progressive scan output, and standard digital and analogue audio output jacks.
Now for the negative points. There is no digital tuner, so once the analogue tv signal is switched off the internal tuner will be redundant. Also it will not 'pass-through' an RGB Scart signal from one Scart socket to the other - for example if I connect my Sky Digibox to the recorder's AV-in Scart socket it will not output the Digibox's RGB signal from the recorder's AV ...
