"LG U8110 - the best 3G phone on three so far."

Finally! 3G users can carry a phone around, which can provide us with a host of multimedia and Internet-based services and no longer be embarrassed by the phone itself.

From the moment I received the box, I was impressed. I got the phone, the charger, car accessories, and I even got a data cable and cd to sync the phone with my pc.

A rotatable camera module is located in the middle section of the clamshell hinge area, which is the one and only lens available to any of the phone’s imaging capabilities. The VGA camera can be used to take pictures, shoot video clips, and provide the input source for video calling.

On the outside, the U8110 has all the typical buttons, sockets and ports. Two volume buttons plus a one-touch video recorder (or camera function) key is situated on the left, with the headset adapter socket and infrared (IR) port respectively located above and below. At the base is the multi-purpose port used by the included travel charger and USB data cable.

Finally, located on the front of the clamshell is the external black-and-white sub display, camera flashlight, and the loudspeaker module used by the video player and video calling functions, as well as the playback of ringtones and keypad sounds.

The ultra-bright TFT screen, capable of vividly displaying up to 65,536 colours, the U8110 has the best display output out of all the 2G/3G dual-mode phone-only handsets I've tried.

The external screen, a full graphics black-and-white LCD, is capable of displaying information on the current phone status (battery and signal levels, roaming indicator, current profile icon, network name), date and time details, and phone activity details (incoming/missed calls and messages).

It has 14mb of internal memory for storing mp3's videos, graphics but has no facility for adding any external memory card, which is a bit of a disappointment.

However, the cd and usb cable supplied make it easy to transfer data back forth between the phone. You can upload mp3's from your computer and use them as ringtones. The same goes for taking videos on the phone and transferring them easily to your computer.

Amazingly, it also syncs with Microsoft Outlook, so you can sync addresses, emails, and content easily via a drag and drop interface.

The battery life was pretty good, although like any camera phone, using video tends to use up the battery pretty quickly.

The quality of the camera and video was just excellent and even in dim light the seetings allowed good quality recordings. Variopus other options further enhance it. As there is a zoom effect, a low-light 2night mode", various overlay effects and an integrated flashlight for dark environments.

It also java applications compatibility which means that you can add java games and apps to the phone. However, this is where the negative side comes into play.

There is no external internet access on the phone and no way to add java apps or games via the cable and software. The phone has been tied to "three" content and this is a bit ridiculous and wasn't highlighted when I bought. This will probably change when other networks have 3G up and running properly.

The quality of the reception was alway excellent, although whether this is because I haven't been into an area not well covered by three.

When the phone is outwith a 3G area, it will automatically switch to 2G. However, it can't retain a call while doing this.

The phone has a lot of great features and if you don't require Internet Access or java apps and games, then I would recommend it thoroughly.

However, if Internet access and java appas and games are important, then give the phone a skip for now. Unfortunately, this is not a reflection of the phone, more of an arrangement between "three" and "LG". This may change in the future as the phone as Internet Capabilities.

The U8110 comes with support for basic text (SMS), multimedia (MMS) and e-mail messaging. and also IMPA4/POP3 accounts.
