"Lindy Digital to Analogue TosLInk Converter"

LINDY SPDIF Digital / Toslink Audio Converter

LINDY SPDIF Digital / Toslink Audio Converter

First impressions

I remember when I got my very first Playstation console, and I would have some kind of converter on it to connect my console to the television set, allowing me to switch between the aerial and the console. What we have here is very different, but this converter is designed to convert one analogue signal into a digital one, though this is just a basic explanation of the product. This powered device is produced by the Lindy brand, and I believe that when it comes to electronics it can be worth spending a little more for the branded item than buy some cheap foreign knock-off and end up with a house fire because the item has not passed the safety tests for your region.

In terms of looks there isn’t a great deal to be said for the Lindy SPDIF Digital to Analogue Stereo Audio Converter. The white box has lots of different ports on it, for input and output, and a switch. If you didn’t know what this was used for I wouldn’t be surprised.

My experience

The input ports that we have on this converter are an Optical Fibre connection (TosLink) and a Digital Coaxial (Phono) connection. The output ports are 2 Analogue Phono Ports, and there are for left and right (red and white). Although I am often confused by the technical specifications on this sort of thing, the input format is SPDIF, LPCM (Linear Pulse Code Modulation) 2 channel, up to 24 bit. Included with the product is a 5V DC multiple country power supply. You will find a number of different heads to slide onto the end of the plug, similar to what you get when you buy a travel adapter for a smartphone etc.

As you can see we have a small box that has a range of ports that we can connect cables to. On one side we have the input ports, on another the output ports, and on the third edge we have the connection for the power cord and also a switch to allow you to select whether you are using the optical or coaxial input port.

You can connect both a coaxial and optical input at the same time, though only one can be active at any time, and this is controlled by the switch. It might sound obvious, but the power must also be switched on to allow the transfer.

I bought a number of Lindy and other brands of high quality cables to coincide with the purchase of this little box, and although it is a shame that the connectors are not gold plated, though the cables I use with it are.

There is a little light on the front of the box which indicates that power is running to the converter, and the number of times I forget to plug the unit in, this is a good feature to have. I am impressed with the quality of the audio through this converter, and with the addition of using this device as a means of conversion for recording purposes, it is very important that every part of the connection and conversion is through high quality equipment. There can be distortion and poor transfers throughout the range or just in parts of the range when you go from analogue to digital, but it is fair to say that digital can be very high quality, and this unfortunately has a habit of magnifying a lack throughout the range.

Price and availability

The Lindy SPDIF Digital/Toslink Audio Converter is not a cheap piece of kit. Priced up at £36.65 from Lindy through the Amazon website, this is a pricey item. What is worth noting is that this is a specialist piece of equipment, and with few buyers out there for this kind of thing you can be almost given them second hand if you look around online.

Final thoughts

Overall this is a piece of kit that is extremely useful, and if you need one then you will have little choice, other than to look for more affordable alternatives. You can buy much cheaper versions of this product for a fraction of the price, but I have never heard of any of those manufacturers, and I trust the Lindy brand. As a one-off purchase you will soon forget the cost, and for a good quality item like this you are buying the quality and reliability.
