I've mentioned in a couple of previous reviews that I bought myself a big set of L'Occitane products from QVC a couple of months ago. Now that I have decided to limit my beauty product spending as it's gotten so ridiculous, I put my L'Occitane products into the back of the cupboard to avoid the temptation.
About a week ago, I decided that I was in need of a treat, and fished them out of the cupboard. I decided to use the Shea body lotion, as I have already used the Shea shower cream and hand cream and thought both were absolutely gorgeous, meaning I had high expectations of this product.
As mine was a kit of travel-sized products, I only have a small 35ml bottle of this, but usually it would come in a rather plain looking 250ml rectangular bottle with a dark blue flip top lid like the one pictured. I do think the packaging on some of the L'Occitane products (including this one) is a little plain and boring, especially for the price that you are paying, but still it is functional, which I guess is the main thing.
One of the reasons I chose to use this first, instead of the other L'Occitane body lotion I have, was that it says on the packaging that it is especially for dry skin. I have really dry skin which is prone to eczema, and I find it becomes even more dried out during the winter.
The body lotion contains 15% Shea butter, as well as natural honey and apricot oil. It also contains subtle essences of jasmine and ylang-ylang.
The fragrance of the lotion is very subtle. I'd used the matching shower gel which barely had any scent at all, but found this to be a little stronger. I can smell the jasmine in it, but it's still quite a gentle, clean scent, and would not overpower any perfumes or body sprays you wanted to use at the same time as this.
I have used a couple of Shea body lotions in the past, and the main thing I recall about them, was that they were very thick. This lotion surprised me, as it was actually quite a nice consistency. It wasn't quite runny, but it certainly was nowhere near being thick, and I was pleased that even a very small amount would cover a large area of skin. Given that I only have a 35ml bottle, I suppose this was very important, as it meant I could get several uses out of it, and as such a true idea of what the product was really like.
The lotion absorbs into the skin very quickly, and at first although it does feel a little tacky to the touch, I would say after around 1-2 minutes it is fully absorbed into the skin. This is another factor I find important about this lotion, as there's nothing worse than getting dressed and finding your clothes sticking to you because your body lotion's not dry!
Once it has absorbed it left my skin feeling very moisturised - especially on areas like my elbows, which tend to be very dry. There was no greasy feeling with this lotion either, and my skin felt hydrated all day, so there was no need for frequent re-application.
Now for the scary bit. I knew the full sized bottle of this would be expensive, as L'Occitane products in general are very pricey, and the matching shower gel had cost £12.50 for the full sized bottle. I was still a little shocked though, to discover that a full sized 250ml bottle of this will set you back £17.50. That is rather excessive I think, and even though I love this lotion, I'm not sure if I would be able to bring myself to pay that much for it. As I mentioned though, only a fairly small amount of this lotion is needed, so I guess it would last a long time, which potentially could make it just as economical as high street brands in the long run.
It can be bought online from www.loccitane.co.uk or it is also sold in Fenwick's and House of Fraser.
Overall, this was a lovely lotion. I like that it has such a subtle scent, that I can use it even when I'm wearing a light perfume, as I know it won't overpower it. It really did sort out my dry skin and sinks in fast which is great too. The main downside for me is the price, as it's definitely not the cheapest around. I do think though as an occasional treat, or as a gift this would be lovely, and I would definitely recommend it, if your budget stretches that far.
Advantages: Intensly smoothing and hydrating Disadvantages: oily and thick takes some time to sink in
I received this as a gift set with the matching soap and shower gel, all three products are beautiful, containing 15th Shea Butter, honey and apricot oil, the smell is very subtle, clean and 'treatmenty' almost like Savlon. I would recommend this body lotion for more of a home spa treatment rather than a daily body lotion, its better suited to applying after an evening bath before going to bed to wake up feeling like you've just had a weekend at ... ...a while to sink in and leaves a sticky, oily film even hours later, normally this would completly put me off but the end result is well worth it hence why i apply before bed so that i can go to sleep and ignore the sticky feeling, your skin is left unbeleivably smooth, supple and even toned, it even makes a considerable difference to the appearance of cellulite probably due to the way it plumps up your skin and the effect lasts for days. ...

•• THE PRODUCT ••
L’Occitane Ultra Moisturising Night Care comes in an aluminium tube (like a toothpaste tube) containing 75ml of cream. This is inside a brown cardboard box with a mainly blue label, which can obviously be recycled. The smell of the sheabutter range is wonderful, but very difficult to describe. It is very rich, but not overpowering and a very clean smell – I love it. The cream contains 15% sheabutter and other moisturising agents: corn, almond and honey.
