At last, a skin product that is not only aimed specifically at women of a certain age but the makers, L'Oreal, were wise enough to use older women to endorse it.
However, why L'Oreal chose 70-year-old Jane Fonda as one of their endorsers, is beyond me. A lovely woman she is, but natural she 'aint. The surgical intervention against the advancing years on her physog is well documented and deep down most women know that the application of a humble moisturiser, even if it contained the carefully harvested sloughed off skin of Snow White is not going to eradicate ten years. So, with the looming horror of a face like slack Alice there wasn't a moment to lose in my test of yet another anti-aging moisturiser. Hah! As if a cream can literally keep the years standing still. That said, I found the results of this moisturiser to be very good and at approximately £11.99 (half the price of most other upmarket skin creams), I was pleasantly surprised.
THE PRODUCT:
L'Oreal Age Re-Perfect Pro-Calcium is a helluva gobful and specifically targeted at women of 60+ (mature to very mature skin) because, from the age of 60, the body is less able to retain calcium. 'For the skin, this calcium deficit can weaken the cohesion of skin cells. With age, the skin loses density, dries out and becomes thinner and fragile. The skin's support fibres deteriorate and the skin sags and slackens'.
Pass the shotgun. According to the company's research, the body does not absorb or retain calcium as efficiently after the age of 60 as it does before, which may be the cause of skin becoming fragile and less resilient as well as dehydrated. The calcium of which they boast, hydroxyapatite, is a form of calcium that can be assimilated by the skin in tiny molecules that are gradually released into the epidermis. I am lucky enough to have a good complexion which is without age spots or heavy wrinkles but like most women in their mid-50's I wanted to generally tighten and brighten up my complexion.
Usually, the word 'mature' doesn't actually refer to women over the age of 50. When marketing people care to break down age groups, generally women of my age are lumped together with the 40+ brigade (and perhaps they assumed that anyone over 50 should be dead). Believe me, your skin is totally different at 55 than at 40, unless you have recourse to a plastic surgeon and/or live in a plastic bubble.
EFFECTS AND RESULTS:
After two weeks of using L'Oreal Age Re-perfect (which also contains SP15) I noticed the following effects and results:
SKIN REHYDRATION: No longer suffer from a flaky nose or forehead. Skin 'accepts' application of foundation very well: 9/10 FIRMNESS AND IMPROVED SKIN TONE: Definitely plumped up finer lines: 7/10 YOUNGER-LOOKING SKIN: Complexion brighter, less fragile: 8/10
In a nutshell, my skin does feel less fragile and more toned. I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm never going to look forty again but was very pleased with the results of this moisturiser.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
Fairly heavy in texture so only a little is needed. Too much and you end up with a surfeit of white cream which resembles an ointment. The cream has no particular perfume that I could discern. As with all moisturisers, prior to applying foundation, allow the cream a couple of minutes to be absorbed into the skin.
HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO OTHER ANTI-AGING MOISTURISERS I'VE TRIED?
Very well, and vastly superior than most. Recent purchases of anti-ageing moisturisers have proved very disappointing mainly because the 'cream' is too thin. My skin responds well to serums and emollients but for some reason 'light' creams are next to useless. . L'Oreal Age Re-Perfect Pro-Calcium can be purchased from Boots and larger chemists and yes, at approximately £11.00 for a 50ml size, I shall be purchasing it again. With once-daily use, I am only approximately a quarter way down the pot yet, after 2 months continuous use.
My skin is changing all the time and no doubt I shall be pouncing on the next miracle cream but, for now, I am really pleased with L'Oreal's new cream for crones.
**At the time of writing, there is a fudgy grey area surrounding the emotive subject of animal testing with regards to L'Oreal's policy. They sort of do and don't test on animals. L'Oreal say they stopped animal testing on it's entire range of cosmetics 14 years ago. Instead, they use 'reconstructed skin models'. These human skin models, developed from human skin cells by means of vitro techniques, are used to obtain a better understanding of the biological mechanisms of skin and to evaluate the efficacy and tolerance of their products. For the full letter, go to Naturewatch Compassionate Shopping - L'Oreal fact file. I am not entirely sure, but I assume that L'Oreal must still use chemicals which have been animal tested by other companies in some way because they are not on the approved list of non-animal testing companies.
