What did I do last Saturday night just before casualty was about to start on BBC 1? Well I decided it's about time I coloured my hair. I bought the box of tricks from L'Oreal months ago but just never found time to apply it. For all you mums out there, you know what its like, no time to yourself when you've got little ones running about.
I have never used L'Oreal before; my usual brand was letting me down so I wanted to try an alternative. L'Oreal promised to give my hair a "deep conditioning shine and a colour that lasts". I wanted the added protection as I am getting older, my hair is drying out somewhat. L'Oreal are a highly respected brand, a global leader in the cosmetics department and they have been in the UK for the past 70 years. Surely I can trust them to deliver the promise on the box then..
Garnier Fructis just a waste of time as after a few weeks the colour had been removed from my hair completely. So L'Oreal Excellence here we come. Here are a few questions and answers after my use on this product that might help in your decision to purchase a hair colour.
**Where did you buy it? ** Even though its readily available just about anywhere in the high street and even the supermarket, I cannot find an online site from the internet. I bought mine from Superdrug as it was on a price reduction offer. I knew the brand and thought I could trust it as L'Oreal is among the World's Top 20 Most Respected Companies .
**How much did it cost? ** Usually £9 but I paid £7, just a fraction more than the regular brands on the shelves.
**What do you get for your money? ** 1 x pre-conditioner 1x bottle of developer 1x dye 1 x conditioner 1 x latex gloves in a plastic pod which is quite awkward to remove the gloves from. Large waterproof paper sheet with instructions printed.
**What colour did you try? ** There were about 25 as a rough estimate on the shelf, many different variations, and quite a good choice infact. As always there is more blonde shades than brunettes, but I found my colour quite quickly. I bought the DARK BROWN shade.
**What colour were you before you tried it? ** I am normally dark brown anyway but being in the sun has tinted my hair a light brown with ginger streaks. I like my collar and cuffs to match, so the ginger bits had to go.
**Does it colour grey? ** Yes. I am not overloaded with grey, I am still in the pluck them out as you see them stage. However, for the ones I cannot see at the back of my hair, I wanted the reassurance they would be coloured.
**How do you start? ** There is a bottle of pre-conditioner to apply on the ends of the hair for extra protection before you add the colour. Do not wash your hair, keep it dry. Don't wash the conditioner out either. You apply the colour straight onto the hair with the conditioner on.
**What next? ** Whilst you have the conditioner on, mix the dye with the developer. Put the dye in the developer bottle, shake like a mad woman for 2 minutes at least and then apply to your hair. Try and get a friend or partner to apply on the back of your hair incase you miss bits out. What ever you do, wear the gloves they provide in a small plastic pod. Keep them on at all times otherwise you will regret it! The instructions are clear and in quite large print so should be easy enough to follow.
**Then what? ** You wait for 30 minutes for the colour to take hold on your hair then rinse out. Make sure all traces of colour have gone (the water should be running clear at this stage), then apply a further bottle of conditioner.
**Can you use it after a perm?** Yes but you must wait a few weeks.
**Was there enough for your hair? ** I have very long naturally curly hair, so no it wasn't enough to cover me adequately. Next time I will buy two boxes for complete coverage as I do have patches not coloured.
**Did it smell? ** The conditioner not at all. The developer and dye has a revolting aroma of blocked drains. It was foul, smelt very disgusting and the mixture of the two chemicals reacted in that it made my eyes weep. Similar scenario as to chopping onions. It was really unpleasant and the pungent smell made its way down the stairs and into my living room. Hubby thought my I.B.S had flared up again and came to see if I was alright. Fortunately I had plenty of ventilation and I would really hate to use this when you have all the windows shut or a close environment.
**Any skin irritation? ** None though they do advise you to do a skin test prior. How many of us actually do that? I know I should not take chances like that but yes I am guilty of just slapping it on.
**Were you happy and any tips? ** I would say I was 90% satisfied with the product. I would recommend you ask a friend or partner to cover the back of your hair if its long, I found doing it alone I was leaving out sections as its purely guess work as to wear the dye goes. The gloves are quite weak so you must be careful with them otherwise the dye will penetrate through the splits in your gloves and turn your hands black. If your hands are hot, sprinkle some talc inside before you put them on. Also makes sure you leave no splashes anywhere in the bathroom, the dye does not come off carpets, grouting and plastic baths. I also suggest wearing a very old t- shirt and removing any traces of dye from around your neck and ears. I made a huge mistake in that I left the colour on for 50 minutes, not the recommended 30 minutes on the leaflet. The reason for that was that I was so engrossed in Casualty that I forgot to rinse off in time. Those few extra minutes do make a considerable difference. Instead of a dark brown at the moment I resemble Elvis. I know the colour will fade in time, probably in about 8 weeks when my colour will show through again. I wash my hair daily so I cannot expect it to last any longer. I must admit the smell was awful but that was the only major downfall. My hair feels good and the ginger streaks are past history. As it's only been a few days since I applied I cannot comment on how long it stays but I will let you all know in a few weeks.

Review of L'Oreal Excellence Extra Protective Crème Colourant
Advantages: Made me feel happy Disadvantages: Made me feel like I was wearing a wig
...some vouchers for money off L'Oreal products, and after much umming and arhing at the shelves in Asda packed with a multitude of colours, I decided it was time to go drastic and get rid of my blonde enhanced locks and go for nice warm dark brown hair. So Mahogany Brown was taken home and put away on a shelf until I felt the time was ready.
A few weekends ago was the time and I was ready. So I carefully opened my little box of goodies to see what ... ...are really quite good, you get some gloop to put on your hair before you start. This is called Protective serum pre-colour care. OOOO sounds posh. A tube of colour, a big bottle with a nozzle with some more gunk in it, ceramide protien conditioner and some posh rubber gloves in their own little canister, rather than those cheap tacky ones that never fit and are normally found stuck to the instruction leaflet.
So after a quick browse of the easy ...

Advantages: I CAN AVOID ALL PHYSICAL CONTACT WITH THE HAIRDRESSER. Disadvantages: YIPPEE NONE!
I'm currently involved with so many age-defying products that my next op is likely to be written by an embryo. I've got no gripes about getting older per se ... indeed, in many ways it's very satisfying to have an entire half century (plus 3 years) of life to look back upon, with fond nostalgia. Some of the physical changes to my outer shell are, however, intolerable ~ and are being dealt with. One source of utter hand-wringing misery, has been the ... ...and unflattering colour, which can only be described as "Fag Ash Grey".
My original colour was "Burnt Umber". I know this, because it was a dead ringer for one of the browns in my paint box. I would have liked to have remained “Burnt Umber” indefinitely ~ albeit with a little assistance. But the odd thing about the wisp of grey hair is that it's totally unlike the rest of the hair on your head. It's bolshy. If you dye it brown, somehow it manages ...

Advantages: Good shade selection, good consistency, easy to apply, good end result. Disadvantages: Smell could be a little better, 'bare' shades (5, 6, 7 etc) can make your hair look dull and dirty
L'Oreal Excellence is a permanent hair colour I've been using more than any other colour over the years. It offers a good range of colours you can mix together if you like, and provides consistent results without having an obvious marketing 'gimmick' to sell the products with; just a good quality, basic permanent colour range. The product is packaged in a feminine looking peach-coloured cardboard box, with a picture of a model wearing the particular ... ...that the picture of the model on the box has been taken in heavy red/yellow studio lighting, and looks lighter than the shade will be on you in daylight, for instance. The box contains: a bottle of developer cream, a tube of colour cream, a little use-once tube of after colour conditioner, gloves and an instruction sheet. The developer cream needs to be mixed with the tube of colour as usual, and the mixture is nice and thick, so it doesn't drip ...

Advantages: Provides good coverage, goes on evenly, easy to spread through hair. Disadvantages: Smells really strong to start with.
...I have never used L'oreal products before, but decided it was time to have a go. Having used products like Nice and Easy, I knew about dying hair, so how hard could this one be to use?
***********************PACKAGING**********************
This product comes in a cardboard box, and is white and peachy/pink in colour. It stands about 8 inches tall and is about 5 inches wide.
On the front of the box, there is a picture of a woman with the same colour ... ...the product and below the picture are three bullet point headings, that tell you about the product. On the top of the box, there is a rectangle that has the colour of the dye in it. This is for quick reference. At a glance, this part of the box stands out.
On both sides of the box, there are the measurements of the amount of product you get, the instructions, the directions of use, safety instructions and contact numbers.
On the back of the box, ...

Advantages: Great coverage, easy to use Disadvantages: not enough conditioner for longer hair
...a tried and trusted make, L'Oreal Excellence Creme. Guaranteed to cover grey, it said.I realise that my hair isn't grey, (although it might be under the years of dye) but it was fairly white, so I was quietly confident that it would do the trick. There was a vast array of colours from which to choose. Normally I have it quite blonde, but to cover up the four colours I was now sporting would probably need something a little darker! I went for a shade ... ...it on the full length of my hair for very long as I didn't want it to go too dark. This product had it's work cut out. It had to significantally cover the dark roots and yet give even coverage to the rest of my hair which looked like a snowstorm liberally sprinkled with cinnamon! It reminded me of the frothy top of a cappucino!! Anyway, I wasn't convinced it would work.... Have you ever tried dying your hair in a caravan? It is an experience not ...
