Advantages: Seems to lighten very dark hair more effectively than other brands Disadvantages: Smell was so intense I almost had to stop!
...so when I spotted the L'Oreal Féria Color Booster (flash brown technology) range which states it is 'specific lightening for darker hair' I thought it'd be perfect for me as my hair is very dark brown (nearly black).
L'OREAL FÉRIA COLOR BOOSTER FLASH BROWN TECHNOLOGY
The dye comes in a pretty bog-standard hair dye box but thankfully (in my opinion) it doesn't look as tacky as things like Nice 'n Easy. 1 applicator bottle containing developer (80ml)

I'm no expert on hair dye but while my highlights were growing out I covered them by experimenting with Umberto Giannini All Over Colours in the Brown and Chestnut shades. They are absolutely gorgeous to use but sadly the colour range is quite limited, so when I spotted the L'Oreal Féria Color Booster (flash brown technology) range which states it is 'specific lightening for darker hair' I thought it'd be perfect for me as my hair is very dark brown (nearly black).
L'OREAL FÉRIA COLOR BOOSTER FLASH BROWN TECHNOLOGY
The dye comes in a pretty bog-standard hair dye box but thankfully (in my opinion) it doesn't look as tacky as things like Nice 'n Easy. I bought P10 'Chestnut Flash Brown' which has a picture of a pretty girl on the front who has a similar skin tone to my own, so that was another clue that hopefully it'd work well for me. As with all hair dyes there are plenty of precautions and warnings on the box and the instruction leaflet which you must read before using the product.
Contained within the box is:
1 bottle lightening gel (31ml) 1 applicator bottle containing developer (80ml) 1 Color Booster concentrate (9ml) 1 tube of Nutri-Protective conditioner (44ml) 1 pair of professional quality gloves 1 instruction leaflet
METHOD OF USE
Preparing the mixture couldn't be easier: simply take the developer bottle (labelled 2) and unscrew the cap, empty in the lightening gel (labelled 1) and then the Color Booster tube (labelled 3). Replace the cap and shake it around until it is thoroughly mixed. The instructions then say to put the gloves on, snap off the top of the developer bottle and apply it to the hair by squeezing it on the mid-lengths and ends and then massaging it in. After 10 minutes you are instructed to apply it to the roots and then leave it for 20 minutes.
As I care a lot about my hair there is no way I'd use a new colour/brand without a strand test, so I did this for the first half hour. It was fine so I proceeded to the full head. I used a different method to above: I emptied the mixture into a ceramic bowl and used a dying brush from the Umberto Giannini kit I used before (you can buy these brushes from some chemists). The first thing I would mention about the application is that the mixture smells absolutely foul. It has a very strong chemical smell which started stinging my eyes after about 5 minutes and then proceeded to give me breathing difficulties after that. Unfortunately my bathroom doesn't have a window but if yours does I'd seriously suggest opening it before using this.
Once the mixture is in the bowl you can see it's has a sort of creamy/gel consistency. To start off with it is fairly pale but it darkens slightly after a few minutes (as it states on the packet, this is normal). It is easy enough to apply with a brush and doesn't drip that much because it is quite thick (but even so, do it over a sink because it does drip a bit). Applying it took be about 10 minutes but as the strand test wasn't a scary colour I thought I'd still leave it on for the full half hour. The smell was still lingering while I was waiting for it to develop but luckily it's not so strong when it's on your head.
END RESULT?
When the half hour was up I got in the shower and rinsed my hair thoroughly. I then massaged it until I saw that the water was running clear and then applied a very generous amount of the tube of Nutri-Protective conditioner. While this didn't smell foul it wasn't particularly great smelling when compared with the gorgeous one included in the Umberto Giannini set. However, I left it on for about a minute and when I rinsed it out my hair felt like (sopping wet) silk so I can't complain! Oh, apart from that it did make the shower floor extremely slippery, more so than any product I have used, so you must take extra care when using this and clean the floor after you get out.
Blow drying my hair in the usual fashion and without applying any styling products my hair ended up silky soft and shiny - and the colour actually showed up! It's not a lot lighter than my natural colour (I didn't want it to be) but it's a nice warm chestnut brown with a beautiful gloss. I did get a few bits of dye on my hairline and neck but luckily I wiped them off and the rest rinsed off in the shower. I also got some on the sink but that washed off without a problem as well. The only minor complaint I'd have is that my hair was not very volumised in the first week or so after dying it. I'm not sure whether it was the dying treatment or using the Nutri-Protective conditioner that did it but if you wanted to dye your hair for an special occasion and you have shiny hair like mine that easily goes flat I'd suggest doing it a couple of weeks before the planned event to give it time to get some volume back.
CLAIMS
1. Boost the lightening: A high performance lightening in only one step, for a truly visible brown.
Yes - without a doubt. Although the Umberto Giannini dyes gave the same beautiful gloss, due to the limited range of shades I never felt that their browns really showed enough on my hair but this one definitely lightens effectively. I would imagine this would be great for people like me with very dark brown or black hair who still want to achieve a nice brown colour.
2. Boost your highlights: A formula that adds shining highlights with the colour. Result: A multi-facted flash brown.
Don't mistake this for a replacement for actual highlights because it won't be! BUT…I would say that I definitely have a couple of variations on the same brown running through my hair so it's not a flat block-colour that you achieve because it looks shining, healthy and natural. Whether it's the Color Booster tube that makes this possible I don't know, but it definitely works well.
3. Boost the shine of your colour with a nutri-protective conditioner that nourishes and protects your hair: your colour is shimmery and shiny for a long time.
I can definitely confirm that my hair is super shiny immediately after using it: not so sure about the 'long time' though because I like to use other intensive conditioners to keep my hair in tip top shape (but as they've met every other claim I'd imagine this would be true too!)
VERDICT
The instructions were very simple to follow; the gloves were great (the vinyl type that don't break when you're using them, unlike those cheap plastic ones that don't fit properly); and last but not least I found the amount of dye to be generous for my not-too-thick mid to long hair.
I wrote the bits before this paragraph straight after dying my hair but waited for a month to say what it looks like now. I can safely say that it still looks really shiny and glossy and the colour is still very visible so I'm really happy with it.
Overall I am very satisfied with the results produced by this dye kit. The two criticisms I would have are: 1. The overpowering chemical smell as I know it isn't good to be inhaling that kind of thing. If I used this in future I would probably enlist the help of my boyfriend so we could get the application over in half the time; and 2. I think it slightly dried my hair out over a period of a few months (but that could also have been me being slack with hair masks).
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
The price of this dying kit can vary but a lot of it depends on the shades you like. They had some at almost half price in Savers but they were not the shades I wanted. Superdrug didn't have my shade (P10) either; only Boots and ASDA did so I went for ASDA at £5.28 which I think is very cheap for a dye that really does the job.
Advantages: Affordable DIY-kit that delivers a brown which really shows up on naturally dark hair, available in a wide range of colours from blondes/browns/reds to purples Disadvantages: Formula is quite strong - contains some bleach, ammonia smell is strong, not suitable for already dry, weakened hair, quite runny hence can be messy
...aisle in Tesco's and saw L'Oreal Feria had a new product : L'Oreal Feria Colour Booster, which comes in a variety of colours. On the pack, L'Oreal claims that this product will make colour show up even on the darkest natural hair shade. I remembered how I used to pay my stylist around £80 just to have my hair colour stripped with bleach, then dyed to a lighter colour with colour toners. Then I saw the price of this new Feria Colour Booster hair dye ... ...conditioning treatment using the supplied L'Oreal Feria Nutri-Protective conditioner.
Now in my past experience, most home-DIY hair-dye kits never produce results that show up on my dark hair unless I leave them on for extra time. So, I was not wiling to take a chance on this Feria Colour Booster hairdye and allow nearly £6 go down the drain... I waited an extra 10 minutes, but I did all that without first checking - i.e. taking few strands of hair, ...

...sob sob. L'oreal Feria Colour Booster is a product that promises more vibrant, long lasting colour. The promise of bright colour is fulfilled when you first dye it, but long lasting? Hmmm.....
I have used the Pure Spice Power and Pure Ruby Power shades, the Spice shade being slightly more coppery than the ruby, but basically the pictures on each box both show bright shiny red locks akin to those of Disney's Little Mermaid. After intially dyeing ... ...intense as that on the model but nonetheless good and strong for a home colourant. With washing however the colour faded very fast, leaving a browny red shade that was pleasant but lacking in the vibrancy and eye-catching colour that I desired and that the packaging suggests you can achieve with the product.
You are supposed to perform a skin sensitivity test 24 hours before applying the product but as a veteran of every hair dye range going I skip ...

Advantages: Very bright, noticeable colour Disadvantages: Lasted about 1 week
...thats the case, I'm sorry L'Oreal for being a heathen, but I bought it already, you don't need to impress me now, so just give me something I can shove on, I'm not bright enough to muddle up and mix like this!
I left it on for the required time, dripped a few drops everywhere which have now stained Shaun's jeans (sorry Shaunie) and generally monged around until towel removal time came.
IMMEDIATE RESULTS

This was the really exciting ... ...It really was 'vibrant' and 'ultra noticeable', and for once my hair actually suited my pale skin, making me look like I was radiant rather than suffering from one vodka too many the day before! My hair was exactly the same shade as on the packet, a sort of deep, purpley red, very bright and shiny. Shaun loved it, I loved it, my youngest daughter, Amy (11) hated it and told me so at every available opportunity!

...that's bottled!"
I bought L'Oreal Paris Feria Color (Colour) Booster from my old faithful Wilkinsons - it was £3.99 and the shade I choose was P75 (no, not redundancy) but Pure Copper Power (sounds a bit Geri).
It's technology but not as we know it; "Multi-faceted 3D color" - my hair is not drawn on so I presume the 3D is my input. "Powerful" - hum, for dying the bathroom and surrounding tiles I give a powerful 9.9.

Worthiness.
Now there is a concept - how about reliabilty. Sorry but the bird on the packet has gorgeously coloured hair that just does not happen and the results whilst transiently pleasing in a coppery sort of way are not vibrant or interesting after two weeks.
I would not recommend this as a lasting way ...

Reviews which might be of interest for "L'Oreal Feria Color Booster"
I'm fast becoming a home hair dye fan. So far, what I've used has been great (Umberto Giannini & L'OrealFeriaColorBooster) but I just get lured in by all the gorgeous different shades offered so end up trying different things. This time it was the turn of L'Oreal Couleur Experte.
L'OREAL COULEUR EXPERTE 'MULTI TONAL COLOUR SYSTEM'
I don't dye my hair to achieve a massive colour change - I just like to keep it looking fresh and glossy as my old highlights keep re-emerging and making the ends look (and feel) dry. Scanning the backs of the boxes I decided a natural looking 5.3 Chocolate Macaroon (not to mention the fact I just love saying Mac-a-Roon in a Geordie accent) would look great.
The main difference between other hair dyes and L'Oreal Couleur Experte (apart from the fact it tries to have a fancy sounding name?) is ...
Advantages: More vibrant colour Disadvantages: None at all!!
As someone who has dyed their hair for 11 years since the age of 12 I am always on the look out for a new product that promises great end results. I have been using the L’Oreal Recital Les Noirs Richesse in Black/blue or Black/purple and was happy with that until I had the urge to be more daring and have a change of colour. So, whilst in Superdrug I spotted the sign that said: NEW and on the shelf below it was: L’OrealFeriaColorBooster technology!
The Product:
I got colour P48 Pure Purple Power (intense violet). It still has all the things that normal Feriacolor has but with a new addition of a little tube of pure colour that you add to the colour developer bottle at the time of mixing. It is this that creates the New ‘Ultra Visible Shade’. This is a permanent colour so it does not wash out, but it will ...
Advantages: Glossy colour, shows up well, good price Disadvantages: Very strong smelling & messier than all other dyes I've used (probably due to the fact you need to dampen hair)
for a long time, especially if you only use it, say, every other time you wash your hair. If you run out I find that Umberto Giannini's Urgent Repair (normal, not intensive) conditioner works in exactly the same way.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
The price of this dying kit doesn't really vary as it tends to be £5.29 everywhere and is available in so many places - almost every supermarket and chemist.
VERDICT
I am confident using L'Oreal dyes now as I have used three different ranges which have all turned out well (Couleur Experte, Preference and FeriaColorBooster). I would be happy to use this range again in this or another shade.
The instructions were very simple to follow and everything in the kit was easy to use. I have long hair and when I had finished dying my hair with a generous amount of gel there was still a lot left in ...
