The only fake tan I had ever used was Johnson's Holiday Skin lotion, and whilst I liked the results it gives, you have to apply it pretty much every day to get noticeable results and maintain your tan. As I am too lazy to apply tanning lotion every day, when this bottle ran out I decided to try something a little stronger that would have a little more staying power. I had no idea where to start, not wanting to pay loads, but not wanting to cheap out and end up looking like a tangerine! Eventually I decided on L'Oreal Sublime Bronze self-tanning gel, as I thought of L'Oreal as being quite a trustworthy brand. Also, the
Sublime Bronze range had 1/3 off at Boots, so I paid £7.32 for a 150ml bottle instead of £10.99. Another thing that attracted me to this product was the fact that it is suitable for use on face as well as body. Previous tanning lotions I have tried didn't work very well on the face, and it saves having to buy a separate lotion.
The packaging isn't bad. It is mainly orangey-yellow and gold, with white writing. It is simple, summery and uncluttered. The bottle is clear, revealing the clear orange gel inside. I don't know why I chose the gel really, just fancied a change to the usual lotions, and didn't really fancy using a spray or mousse.
I tried the gel for the first time last week, having exfoliated, but not moisturised, as this gel has a smoothing effect and is vitamin E enriched (good for the skin). The smell of the gel is nice; sweet and slightly fruity, but not too strong, which is good. It feels a bit oily on your hands and body when applying, although the bottle says non-greasy. If anyone has ever used baby oil gel, it is similar to this, but not quite as oily. However, this does not last, and it seems to dry and soak in fairly quickly, so I don't think it is really a negative. The good thing about using a gel is that is glides very easily, so you get good coverage.
Like most fake tans, the perfumed smell soon wears off and then you get the smell of it whilst is is developing. This isn't actually too bad, it is less noticeable than any other I have experienced, but still isn't that nice!
The back of the pack says you will see the beginning of the results after one hour. I don't know if this is true or not, as I wasn't constantly checking the progress. All I can say is that after a few hours I had a a noticeble, yet still fairly subtle glow. It wasn't too much of a difference, and it wasn't orange, I just looked a healthier, more golden shade of my natural colour.
The colour was also nice and even. I was very careful to rub it in carefully, esspecially round my ankles and knees. My knees were fine, which was suprising, as they always seem to get patches. The ony slightly dodgy bit was one of my elbows, but that was probably me, not the gel! It also had good effects on my face, and didn't gather in my eyebrows or hairline.
The back of the bottle advises you to use every day until you reach your desired intensity of tan, and then to use every two to three days after that. However, one application was enough to give me the glow I wanted, and I think that even if you wanted a darker tan, only one more application would be neccessary. I liked the effect I got from applying it once, but I think if you used it for several days in a row you would be quite orange! After this first application, I didn't use it again until a few days later, and I will continue to use it every few days as this is enough to maintain the colour I like.
The one downside to this product, is that I don't think the bottle will last very long. Even after the first application I noticed that quite a lot had been used. If you were to apply daily at first, as the bottle suggested, I don't think this product would last you very long at all. Also, the gel itself doesn't look very nice in the bottle. It looks orange and gloopy! I think a lotion is also available in this range, so this might be a bit nicer.
Would I buy it again? Yes, I think I would. I thought it was a good product for the price, and it gave me the results I was after. I definately trust the L'Oreal Sublime Bronze range, but next time I might try a lotion intstead of the gel, as I think I might prefer this. Even so, I would be happy to continue using the gel as it does the job fine.
