Okay, I said it wouldn’t happen, but it did – Penelope Cruz has done it again! As the ‘Face of L’Oreal’, she’s managed to persuade me once again to part with my hard earned cash, and splash out on yet another of her recommended beauty products, in a bid to convince me that I too, can look like her – this time, it’s L’Oreal’s new Telescopic Mascara.
Up until about March of this year, I’d been using a couple of different tried and tested mascaras. Each day would vary between me using my cheap bog-standard Boots No 17 mascara, and other days, (when I felt I needed to look a bit more ‘glam’, I’d don my other favourite (but much more expensive), YSL mascara.
Penelope had been shouting out at me to try this new one by L’Oreal in various magazines and TV adverts for weeks, and every time I went into my local Boots the Chemist during my lunch break I would come face to face with her giant cardboard cut out head by the tills, telling me that I too could look as gorgeous as her, if I forked out £8.99 and applied it to my spindly lashes. I managed to resist the temptation (for a little while at least), but whilst in my local Superdrug a little while ago, I noticed that they had it on ‘special offer’ - £2.00 off the RRP. At only £6.99 I figured I’d give it a go!
The mascara itself comes in two colours, dark brown and black (as well as waterproof varieties in the same shades). As I’m so pale skinned with blonde hair and blue eyes, I’ve never used black mascara as I find it looks too ‘false’, so I decided to go for the colour I’d usually purchase – dark brown. The bottle is gold coloured and actually looks as though it was a lot more expensive.
It’s approximately six inches high, thicker at the base, and it tapers slightly towards the tip. The annoying bit about this particular product is its packaging. The bottle itself is placed inside a cardboard and plastic container and it’s absolute murder to actually remove the mascara from the packaging. Unless you want to break (or seriously damage) a nail or two, I suggest you ask a pal (who doesn’t mind risking a broken nail) or a husband/partner to remove it for you. The plastic is sharp and almost ‘welds’ the bottle to the cardboard!
The packaging states that the mascara would give me 60% longer lashes in just one step and that my lashes would be magnified and separated without any clumping. I was pleased to see that this mascara claims only to make my lashes longer, and does not claim to make them thicker. I personally do not like thickening mascaras as I’ve never yet found one which has not made my lashes glue together into a sticky mess – or maybe it’s just that I’ve been applying it wrong all these years.
Once I’d managed to remove the mascara from the packaging and I opened the bottle, I noticed how tiny the brush looked. It’s just as long in length as any standard mascara brush, but it is noticeably a lot lot thinner. If you look at the end of the wand you can see a ‘star shape’ as the brush has what L’Oreal states is a ‘Precision Multi Comb’ – i.e. it consists of four rows of very small combs, forming the ‘star shape’. As the comb is so very skinny, it enables me to reach even the tiniest of lashes into the very corners of my eyes. I have to say, that before I used this product, I wasn’t aware that I even had so many tiny lashes in the corner of my eyes. The comb is extremely flexible and at first glance it appears to be quite flimsy. Once you start to use it, however, you find that it’s actually quite robust.
The first time I used this mascara I applied only one coat. For work and general day-to-day wear I always use just one coat and find that this is enough coverage for me. If I’m going out for the evening, however, and want a more ‘dramatic’ look, I always apply a second coat. This gives my lashes an even greater ‘magnified’ effect yet still it does not clump my lashes together – amazing! There is absolutely no need to use a comb (as I have been known to do with some mascaras) to separate the lashes after application, as the comb itself separates the lashes perfectly as the mascara is applied.
Drying time is also a very important factor for me, as I’m always in a hurry getting for work most mornings and need a product that dries fast and effectively. Again, this mascara is brilliant. I find I can blink my eyes very soon after application, without any tell-tale black/brown dots appearing over the tops of my cheeks or eyelids! It lasts very well over the day and does not smudge or smear as the day wears on, and although it does not claim to be smudge-proof – it actually should, because all the times I’ve used it, it hasn’t once smudged! It isn’t waterproof, but as I stated earlier, there are waterproof varieties in the same colours out there – it’s just that I always find waterproof mascara very difficult to remove.
Removing the mascara is also a doddle. I never use any special eye make up remover, creams or lotions (although maybe I should). The packaging states that it’s recommended that you use L’Oreal Dermo Expertise Gentle Eye Makeup Remover – I don’t! I simply use my usual facial wipes, and I find it’s extremely easily removed, despite being long-lasting and long-wearing whilst it’s actually on my eyes.
My eyes can be quite sensitive to some products I use, so I have to be fairly careful when trying new products. L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara is kind to my eyes and (thus far) I have not developed a sensitivity to it! This may be of course as the packaging also states that it has been tested under ophthamological conditions and that it is also suitable for people with sensitive eyes as well as contact lens wearers – perfect!
I fell in love with this product the very first time I used it. For this reason, I decided to buy an ‘extra’ couple of tubes, for when my first tube ran out, just in case L’Oreal decide it’s not a good seller and discontinue it – this has also happened to me a few times with other make up products I really like, so I decided to play safe this time! My daughter now uses this mascara too and I’ve recommended it to loads of my friends. I don’t have the lashes of Penelope Cruz exactly (although I think I’d look a bit odd if I did), but I’m more than pleased with the result this mascara gives me, and I figure that at under a tenner, “I’m Worth It”.
Advantages: Great length and volume, wicked brush, great value for money Disadvantages: Erm... I can't think of any
I bought L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara at Superdrug for £8.99.
I bought the black one but it is also available in Brown or Waterproof Black.
The tube is gold (the colour not actual gold lol), about 15cm tall and shaped like a mini-telescope (hence the name).
When I opened the mascara, the first thing I noticed was the brush. It was unlike anything I had seen before! It’s very skinny; just 4 rows of combs (you’ll see that they form an “x” if you look ... ...also very flexible. The wand is about 12cm long including the handle.
I normally apply mascara looking straight into the mirror with my eyes half-shut and comb through my lashes while wriggling the brush at the same time. However, with this mascara, I found that the best way to apply it for maximum coverage was to slowly roll the brush away from you as you comb through the lashes, so that each of the combs go through the lashes one at a time. It ...

L’Oreal telescopic mascara
I like to have different mascaras and decided on this one during a recent foray at the supermarket
PROMISES...
The mascara comes with the promise that lashes will be dramatically longer with twice the intensity, mainly because it apparently has a patented flexible precision brush (whatever that is!)so it seems to be just the kind of thing i am going to Like. It also promises to be opthalmologist and allergy tested and ... ...as being fragrance free. The mascara will also remove easily with soap and water which gives me the impression that it can’t be waterproof.
How it Works...
The aforementioned patented Flexible Precision Brush lengthens lashes up to 60% and exclusive Carbon Black pigments provide two times the intensity! I am often bemused by how many of these make up products have such exclusive and patented ingredients.

Advantages: Does exactly what it says, fun tube shape Disadvantages: Pricey, design not too functional, brush too long
My quest for a perfect mascara has admittedly been half-hearted. To be honest, I don't usually use one just because I've been blessed with such long eyelashes anyway that I don't find it totally necessary. Most tend to give such an extreme look that I look I'm wearing false eyelashes, which is not ideal for an everyday look! So I decided to treat myself to a new one I had heard a bit about and thought might suit my needs, and bought a tube of Loreal ... ...it's high-precision flexible brush provides "telescopic length up to 50% longer" and "cleanly defined, perfectly separated lashes".
I bought the Clean Definition version in black, there are also carbon black and brown "normal" (eg non-defining) versions and a black waterproof version.
DESIGN AND FUNCTIONALITY
The most unusual thing about the mascara to look at is the shape of the tube - it's shaped like a telescope! I kind of enjoyed this because ...

Background
L'Oreal Telescopic Mascara is a Mascara designed to lengthen your lashes by up to 60% using such a think brush for precision and magnify to give you bold lashes, the brush is also designed to separate each lash. No doubt you've probably seen the adverts with Penelope Cruz wearing the mascara - it looks fantastic on her. Ok…so I knew that there was a 99% chance my lashes wouldn't end up looking like hers, firstly she has lash inserts and ... ...well, anywhere really that sells L'Oreal products. Price & Value
In Boots where I got this Mascara from it cost me £8.99, I don't think that's particularly expensive because Mascara's tend to last quite a while and you would get 32 advantage points back if you have a Boots advantage card. I have to say though I wouldn't pay that again and you'll understand why once you've read about my experience. Personal Experience

Advantages: The volume, Price, Disadvantages: Non that i can think of
...try this, i bought the L'Oreal Telescopic Carbon Black which comes in a black tube not the usual Greyish one, as far as im aware they dont have a waterproof one in the Carbon Black but they do in the norman Telescopic range. On taking the wand out of the tube i was shocked, i wondered how on earth this tiny wand would make any difference to my lashes there is 4 rows of combs which look like an "X" and they are so small. There does not look like there ... ...say about it however i would say that if someone was after more volume this perhaps is not the Mascara for them as although L'Oreal do not claim this makes lashes have more volume i think it gives quite enough for me but maybe not so much for everyone else. ...

Advantages: applicator, good consistency, dries quickly Disadvantages: none really
I saw this product advertised on TV and was tempted. Ive quite fussy with mascara because I hate cloggy thick lashes. This product is fab. The actual liquid is just the right consistency but the strength of this item is the brush.. which isnt really a brush its a plastic comb..which seperates the lasts really well. In fact I have used the comb with other mascara and it still works really well. My lashes definelty look longer. The mascara also dried quickly and I was able to apply more than one coat without it looking heavy and spiderey. The packaging is also very nice. It is very sleek and stylish and looks more expensive. This is a meduim priced product and is well worth the money.
Recommend giving it a try. ...
Advantages: Not as tricky as it seems. Good lengthener. Disadvantages: Not that good for volume. Some people may struggle with application.
This is currently L'oreals latest mascara. The unique selling point is the globe wand! The only other mascara that I'm aware of that has this type of wand is the Givenchy one for £22!! This one has a RRP of £8.80!
When I first saw it I thought it would be hard to apply and fiddley to use. It is actually surprisingly easy. It did take me longer to apply than usual but that was mainly because I didn't want to poke my eye. I think if you aren't confident applying mascara then try others before this one.
It is really good for lengthening and also for seperating lashes. I found it really does make you look awake and opens your eyes nicely. The only thing I found wrong with it was that it isn't that great for volume. I have very fine lashes and it emphasised that. However, one of the best lengthening mascacra I've ever used. ...
Advantages: Natural looking lashes, quick & easy to apply, no clumps, doesn't irritate eyes. Disadvantages: Does not give more volume, not cheap.
for the True Match Minerals (in my eternal search for the perfect foundation), which they didn't have, but I noticed that the Telescopic Clean Definition mascara was on special offer, £2 off, so it was £6.99 rather than £8.99. That was incentive enough for me, I had gone in to buy some Palmers Cocoa Butter lip balm anyway, so now I could use the spend over £10 get 75 points voucher that you get from the advantage card machines (I bought 2 lip balms, and anything to get more points, I love points).
Product Claims
L'Oreal claim that this mascara will give you cleanly defined, perfectly separated lashes that are up to 50% longer.. Sounds great, I hate it when mascaras make my lashes stick together or it clumps. L'Oreal says that this is down to their innovative High Precision Flexible Brush, which separates your lashes and defines them one by one ...
