Advantages: Does what it says on the tin. Disadvantages: Disadvantages?!
During my final year of uni, this little gem turned out to be a Godsend. Doing a course which required a lot of camera work, I needed somewhere to store all the raw footage, which anyone who's ever worked with footage from a high quality video camera knows, takes up a hell of a lot of space.
So I needed somewhere to keep it locked away safely to take around from uni computer to uni computer. My weapon of choice for an external hard drive was the Lacie DesktopHardDisk 320 GB.
Having brought it online for just under £50, that instantly stuck me as a bargain. Purchased approximately 18 months ago, that was a steal. Naturally, with the passing of time and the increasing availability of external hard drives, the price of this items has began to fall, as is the case with all types of technology.
Once plugged in and inserted into a USB ...
Advantages: Price, Capacity, Reliability Disadvantages: Size, Requires own power supply
I have owned this external hard drive for over a year and have found it to be an extremely reliable product. It has a 500GB capacity, which is more than enough for most people, and I also picked it up for a relatively low price, compared to other drives of a similar capacity on the market.
It is a fairly large drive, and requires its own power supply, so it is definitely not a portable device. However, as a secondary drive to your desktop pc, it is more than capable, as it has reasonably fast transfer speeds. It is also pretty durable, as mine has fallen off of its desk more than once while running, and still works as good as new.
It is extremely quick and easy to set up, taking a matter of seconds once the wires are all in place.
I would definitelty reccommend this to a friend who required a cheap, reliable storage drive, but did ...
Advantages: Fast transfer speed, protection from knocks and drops Disadvantages: Fairly high price
they have less than what they state. For e.g. a 320 GBhard-drive will have about 290 GB, which is quite a chunk away from the stated amount. So, looking at the LaCie external hard-drive you will be looking at a memory capacity of 230-240 GB, which in this case is not a large chunk, but is still considerable.
There is no known reason why all hard-drives (including the LaCie) have less memory than stated, it may be due to the internal disk within the outer case not being able to hold the stated amount or it may be that company's want to make a profit out of its customers. No on really knows. If you don't believe me about the memory capacity of a hard drive being less than stated, you can yourself check your hard-drives capacity by going into 'My Computer' and then right clicking the computer hard-drive icon and going into its properties ...
