LaCie 250GB USB Hard Drive
My PC is about three years old and has a 160GB hard drive installed. I had always been amazed at how quickly the size of standard hard drives had grown and thought the days of juggling software and stored data were long gone. I'd never come close to filling a hard drive since they started getting bigger than 30GB and could back up all my important files to a few CDs.
That was before I got into video editing, digital photography and MP3s.
As I started downloading several years worth video footage I was shocked to see how much space they took up. The early editing software I used had a counter showing how big the file you are currently downloading is and the available space remaining on your hard drive. This counter is in GB and to see it moving was frightening. I quickly realised I needed some external storage and started looking around at the available options. As often happens, one of the computer monthly's were reviewing this kind of storage option. This model was very highly rated on all important areas and I was confident to go ahead and buy it.
Why would you want to buy this kind of unit? There are two mains reasons; as an additional hard drive to hold large files to supplement your PC or as a back up device to keep your data safe should something go wrong with your PC. If using it for back up it is important that it can be easily removed from the PC and kept somewhere safe.
Out of the box: The unit was delivered within a couple of days of ordering at a cost of £92. First impressions were very good as this is an exceptionally good looking unit. Manufacturers are making more and more effort with the design of products these days and LaCie seem to have gone beyond the merely functional with this and produced something that looks great. Brushed steel casing with a mirror finish steel front, four discrete indents on the top and a single LED on the front, with no visible branding or identification it is a minimalists dream. About the size of a hardback book, it is quite small and can be easily transported in a laptop case. If you intend to use it purely for backing up, the small size means in can be easily stored in a domestic safe.
In the pack is the unit, a power cable, a USB cable, instructions and an installation CD. Assuming you have Windows 2000 or later the CD and probably the instructions are effectively redundant. Installation is a doddle; connect the power, plug the USB into the PC and turn it on. The PC will automatically detect it and assign a drive letter and you're ready to start transferring files.
In use: As long as you are using an up to date PC with USB 2.0, or a suitable hub, transfer speeds are indistinguishable from the internal hard drive. Files can be 'drag and dropped' in the explorer window and you can work directly on files stored on the unit with no noticeable delay. My PC will usually pick up the unit within 15-20 seconds of it being turned on and display it in the Explorer window. At 250GB it is very large (how we'll laugh at this in a couple of years!), as there are many storage devices currently for sale with 100GB or less. Magazine reviews like to quote a cost per GB for storage units and on this basis this unit is excellent value. As a back up device or when used as an additional hard drive this unit performs without fuss. I use it partly as a back up but mostly as an overflow site for data. In operation it is very quiet, far quieter than the PC. A gentle whirr from the disc and the orange LED on the front the only signs of life. This, in itself, is one of the minor problems. Several times I have turned off the PC only to find the LaCie quietly running the next morning, a shame it doesn't have a sleep mode.
File size is limited to 5GB. This isn't normally a problem but some video files easily exceed this and when these are transferred the LaCie will split them into smaller chunks.
I often pack this with my laptop and it is a perfect size for this, although the power cable takes up as much space. Another reviewer mentioned scratches when transporting it in this way and although I haven't suffered from this I can see it happening. A small carry case or bag would be a nice idea although, to be fair, LaCie don't advertise this as a mobile device.
Summary: Data storage and back up capability will become more and more important for people, even if they don't currently realise it. With digital photography all but wiping out traditional film, people risk losing a huge amount of irreplaceable data if they don't back up. This unit will provide a significant amount of storage, perform without fuss and, as a bonus, look great. For the price I'm more than happy to recommend it.
Advantages: Compact, easy to set up, and nice design Disadvantages: Slightly loud and supplied with pathetically short USB cable
...plug it in. There is Lacie "1 click backup" software supplied if needed and all required cables and power supply. The USB cable is however probably about half a meter long which is ridiculous so you may need to consider purchasing a longer cable or USB extension.
One further downside: slightly loud and has a humming noise but nothing severe.
Would get a 5 star rating from me, excellent product and amazing value for money. Highly recommended

Advantages: Value for money, Looks, capacity Disadvantages: Scratches, Rubber feet fall off, NO aftersales support (worth mentioning)
LaCie have obviously marketed this external drive at the people who want both a functional computer system and a good-looking one. The drive has been designed with F. A. Porsche and has a nice minimalist look to it, a metallic grey case with all most mirrored front the drive looks great, even better when stacked with another one. With only one LED on the front your not left with loads of bright lights flashing at you when your trying to keep the ... ...ensure its still on.
LaCie have released the drive in a range of sizes with a range of connection such as USB and Firewire so whatever your need you should be able to find a drive to suit.
I personally purchased the 250GB as it was both the largest and best value for money at the time, no doubt as time goes on this will be superseded.
Two very minor issues with the drive are that it does scratch easily when its in a bag with the external power ...

Advantages: Extremely easy to set up and it works Disadvantages: Power supply a bit clunky but not a real problem
This Lacie drive looks very nice when taken out of the box - designed by Porsche - minimalist styling etc etc but that isn't worth anything unless it works. All I can say is that I had it up and running with all my data and backups from my hard disk within about 2 minutes of plugging in the USB. My PC is 3 years old running XP with all the Service packs and was slowing down because of the amount of space taken up by my old stuff - a lot of scans ... ...-assigned Drive letter and name LACIE and that was that.
As far as the design goes it sits on the floor underneath the PC so the design doesn't matter but the size does. It is about the size of a VCR cassette. The power supply is a bit clunky but that doesn't matter to me.
Data transfer rates seem very fast - I transferred about 60 GB of files on installation and it zipped through it quick enough for me. I don't notice any difference whether I ...

Advantages: Size, ease of use Disadvantages: could be faster on new models if had e-SATA
To start this drive looks good and feels heavy which gives an immediate impression of sound quality. There is an instruction manual on provided disc. Its 190 x 110 x 35 mm in size, so small enough to tuck away out of sight, although it's best to give adequate ventilation whilst running as it's passively cooled (no fan - near silent). If using as a backup device you will need to install Silverlining 98 from the mentioned disc, or use your own software. ... ...Windows/Linux/Mac as it's seen as just another drive, so backups can be done without software (remember that this is not incremental though). If your computer allows boot from USB (check bios settings) you can use this device to boot from. I've successfully managed to boot Linux from it through a preinstalled Windows laptop, and it runs at a good speed. Overall transfer speed is as good as you can get with USB2 (around 400mbps). The drive needs formatting ...
