Although it's kind of important to us to have something that's good to look at, the most important thing really was price per GB of available back-up space - and this little beauty didn't disappoint! I think we paid around £80 or thereabouts for it which, for an external drive isn't bad anyway, but when it's as well-designed (ie. it looks good and is pretty lightweight too so easy to transport) as this one, I think it's a really good buy.
We do a fair bit of backing up, and subsequently transferring onto DVDs and have had to reformat the drive after removing a load of files to give us back the full amount of space, but that's not too much of a chore and, I suspect (?), applies to any drive on the market.
It doesn't really do any more or less than other hard drives with the same capacity, but it does look good!

Review of LaCie Hard Drive Design by F. A. Porsche USB 2.0 500 GB
Advantages: looks nice, works fine and i havent broken it yet! Disadvantages: on/off button a little fiddly, short usb cable (can be extended)
I am a VERY clumsy person and this thing has inevitably been dropped, thrown, kicked, trodden on and sat on. It still works. recently it's started making quite a loud noise but that was after being thrown off a bed while being read from so I think thats my fault, not the product.
it looks neat and is really compact. because it's flat you can have it whichever way up you want and you can put stuff on top of it which is always a plus.
on/off switch ... ...it is so i dont think it's really a problem.
I think it's pretty much an ideal hard drive. it's cheap, compact, looks nice and most importantly, is pretty much indestructible.
one thing i'll mention about my ratings is that I've put manufacturer help and user manual as satisfactory because I've never had a reason to use them

Advantages: Nothing special Disadvantages: No auto on/off - poor indicator and switch
An average external hard drive that just does its job, that it is a little smaller than some others is not so important for me. A big drawback is that it does not switch on and off with the computer and the manual switch is fiddly and mounted at the opposite end to the indicator light. I find it invariably gets left on for days at a time. The supplied USB cable is very short and as mine is plugged into the front of my computer I do not see the light. ... ...or off so until I try it or pick it and turn it around to check the light I don't know it is on or not. It does the basic job that any drive should do but has no plus point.
7200 rpm 8mb cache and USB 2 are normal these days. ...
