We have had our Labrador, Harvey, for almost 4 years now. We bought him from a reputable breeder in Southport, who gave us great advice on the telephone prior to us even visiting. She was able to answer our questions with great knowledge of the breed, which was a big part in us deciding to buy a dog from her. So, my husband, my 3 children and myself set out - paid a quick visit to the cash machine and off we went! The children were obviously very excited at the thought of having a pup of their own.
We had initially decided to buy an 8 or 9 week old pup but on arriving at the breeders and approaching the first pen, I totally fell in love with one particular dog. He was older than we had decided on, being just over 12 weeks old, but I was insistent! She took him from the pen and handed him to me - it was love at first sight! He was adorable and immediately snuggled into my neck. The breeder introduced us to his mother and father - his mother was golden and his father was a huge chocolate brown labrador. We went into the office to complete the paperwork and the breeder went over all the imporant information that we needed to know. We were informed of vaccinations, worming, flea treatment and information on the particular breed. She gave us written instructions on feeding and supplied us with enough food for him for a week. We knew that labradors were BIG chewers but that they were excellent with children. So, £250 lighter we left and set off for home.
We found Harvey very easy to house train. They are so obedient and intelligent and so eager to please. Yes, we had problems with chewing! He ate his way through 6 pairs of training shoes and numerous door frames! Kids toys went missing and then turned up in his bed, chewed! Labradors are so full of energy and need plenty of exercise - which works well for both the owner and the pet! He is almost 4 years old now and has calmed down a great deal, but is still playful and full of energy. He is protective of the family, but not in an aggressive way to others. Whilst walking him one evening about 11pm, I was followed by two youths and I have to say, I felt very vulnerable. Harvey sensed this and turned and barked loudly at the two youths, enough to make them think twice about doing anything! If one of the family members is ill, he will sit by your side and nuzzle into you. They are filled with love and make an ideal family pet. As they are a large dog, obviously they need plenty of room and exercise.
I wouldn't be without Harvey - my family would be lost without him. If you are considering buying a labrador, ensure that you find a reputable breeder and with a labrador as a pet, you won't go wrong!

We have a Lab/Collie cross, she's golden, looking more like a medium sized Labrador. A wonderful breed the Lab & as you say, very energetic :-) Thanks for sharing :-) Ray.

ability to learn and their joy in working make Labrador Retrievers outstanding companions as hunting dogs rescue therapy or guide dogs. Their calm friendly demeanors and their strong nerves also make Labradors unbeatable family pets. A balanced diet and plenty of exercise are necessary for your Labrador's long healthy life. Because of their large appetites and tendency to be overweight a breed-specific diet with low fat content are important - excess weight causes undue stress on the joints and greatly endangers your dog's health. Eukanuba Breed Labrador Retriever is a complete balanced dry dog food developed specially for Labrador Retrievers. It helps strengthen and support healthy limbs and joints control weight and promote overall health. Advantages: Available at many pet stores and supermarkets. My dog loves them. Come in different sizes. Disadvantages: None, except my dog would eat a whole box given the chance.
