...had decided upon was a Labtec Pulse 485 system, Argos were selling these for just £29.99 and so off I went.
My first impression when I got my new purchase home was how incredibly light it felt. The big box which I later learned to be called a subwoofer was the perfect size and the two speakers were so slim-lime it was incredible.
Appearance wise the subwoofer is rectangular in shape and black in colour with a fancy silver ... ...stands about 10 inches high and is about 7 inches deep.
Each of the two speakers are identical as you would probably expect (but don't forget I am a bit of a novice). They are only about 6 inches high and very slim, only a couple of inches deep at their widest part. They are so light you can easy hold one in each palm of your hand. The speakers are very modern looking, made from black plastic with a silver cloth front that has a lovely ... more
I enjoy laying in bed half asleep listening to music from my PC so a few weeks ago when my speakers started to crackle I was devastated. I messed around with them for a few days but the crackling just seemed to get worse and so I decided that it was time to buy some more.
I am not a multimedia surround sound freak who can quote how many watts a speaker can belt out and actually sound like I know what I am talking about and when I started to browse around I suddenly realised that I didn't actually know the first thing.
And so I thought about what I needed from a logical perspective and laid down my criteria.
Price - This was very important to me. I certainly didn't want to spend a lot of money on something that was only ever going to provide a bit of background noise in my bedroom for me to fall asleep to, so I set a limit of £50.
Style - I needed something modern looking, quite small and compact and preferably with wall mountable speakers.
At this point nothing else was particularly vital
And so I started to browse around on the Internet. I looked at most of the main electrical superstore websites, Curry's, Dixons, Maplins etc but in the end I actually found what I wanted to be cheapest in Argos.
The product that I had decided upon was a Labtec Pulse 485 system, Argos were selling these for just £29.99 and so off I went.
My first impression when I got my new purchase home was how incredibly light it felt. The big box which I later learned to be called a subwoofer was the perfect size and the two speakers were so slim-lime it was incredible.
Appearance wise the subwoofer is rectangular in shape and black in colour with a fancy silver oval plate on the front bearing the name Labtec. It stands about 10 inches high and is about 7 inches deep.
Each of the two speakers are identical as you would probably expect (but don't forget I am a bit of a novice). They are only about 6 inches high and very slim, only a couple of inches deep at their widest part. They are so light you can easy hold one in each palm of your hand. The speakers are very modern looking, made from black plastic with a silver cloth front that has a lovely carpet like texture.
The subwoofer plugged straight into the back of my hard drive and the speakers were hooked up in seconds
And now finally onto the performance…..
The sound was perfect. Much better quality than I was expecting considering some similar looking products (visually speaking) ran into several hundreds of pounds. There are two knobs on the back of the subwoofer for volume and bass. The volume button when turned less a quarter is perfect for my situation but for those of you who wish to perforate your eardrums the volume is capable of going up much louder believe me. And the quality of sound was perfect too with absolutely no distortion at all.
For those of you out there with knowledge of such things the nominal output power is 28 watts and for any of you proper boffins out there the full specification is as below
Type 2.1 speaker system
Speakers 2 x 8 watts RMS
Frequency 48 Hz to 20 kHz
Remote Control No
Number of Speakers 2 speakers + 1x subwoofer
Size (mm) 315 x 347 x 245
Weight (g) 4990
I would definitely recommend this product because I feel that I got everything that I wanted and more from such a reasonably priced item
Advantages: Excellent sound quality, cheap. Disadvantages: Controls on back.
I am very pleased with these speakers. They are very good for their price and have very good sound quality. There is one large subwoofer and a left and a right speaker. Sound Quality. The sound quality is absolutely perfect, I definitely cannot fault this at all! It sounds crystal clear and has very good bass which can be turned up very high. I personally think these are as good as a lot of the more expensive speakers you can get, sound-wise. Occasionally ... ...noticeable, so it does not hinder the quality at all. Design. I think the speakers look fine and I like the black and silver look, but I really do not like the fact that the controls are all on the back. It is annoying having to reach right round the back every time I want to adjust the volume or bass. In my opinion the controls would be a lot better on the front, for easier access. I think it would also be nice if there was also a treble knob, as ...

Quick review of Labtec Pulse 485
I purchaed this set of speakers from maplins a few months ago, and they are brilliant for the price!, The only down side is the volume/bass controls are on the back of the subwoofer, It would have been nice to have a seperate unit for on top of the desk like i have seen with other makes. Sound Quality is awesome on games, or just music, Bass is good. ...

Advantages: good value for money for an under £30 system Disadvantages: poor sound from the staelite speakers, volume controls are at the back
...different speakers I saw the Labtec Pulse 485 price at ~£20, and compared with other systems it offered 8w rms speakers where others were less, however the decidng factor was the sub. There were other systems costing more which only had two speakers, the Pulse 485 offers a 2.1 system with a 12w sub.
After unpacking the speakers which do look very nice with my set up as they match with a nice silver and black design, I got to work and made sure they ... ...i thought i had a bargain.
However, after a few weeks the speakers have developed a crackle which isn't persistent but happens enough to annoy. The most disappointing thing with this system is that the controls for the speakers are on the back oof the subwoofer so you have to keep it with in a close vicinity to change the volume, although once you have the base set up the overall volume can changed using a multimedia keyboard with volume control. ...

Advantages: great value for money, no significant sound quality issues Disadvantages: controls on the back of the sub, which isnt very practical
...a budget. I found the Labtec 485 system in Argos for just short of £30. Not being an expert in the matter, I compared the price / watts ratio and found this system to be pretty good value on paper at least. I had never heard of Labtec before so I wasnt sure whether to go for the cheap system or spend £5 or £10 more on a brand like Creative or Philips, but decided to take the risk. I have to say I am not disappointed in the least with the speakers.
... ...mid frequencies, but I'm sure this can be sorted if you play about with your PCs sound equalizer enough.
Overall I am very happy with the Labtec 485 system, they are great value but if I upgrade again I will definitely spend a bit more money on better sound quality. ...

Advantages: Very good bass, clear sound, cheap Disadvantages: Awkward control knobs
Bought these speakers over a year ago as part of my new computer build, have used them pretty much every day since and they are as good as the day I purchased them. Have owned some cheaper speakers before and these seem to be in a different class, for just a few pounds extra. The sattelite speakers are pretty standard, as you would expect from any system, clear sound, clean styled look, compact and easy to fit around a desk. The subwoofer however ...
