Turning Oscar Wilde's epigram-laden plays into silent movies was never going to be the ... more
easiest of tasks. This 1916 version ofLady Windermere's Fan, one of the earliest Wilde films, tackles the dilemma by the drastic expedient of chucking out all the wit and keeping the melodrama. The action revolves around that favourite figure of the Victorian stage, The Guilty Mother Who Must Atone, and the script reworks the action of Wilde's play to shift our sympathies, right from the first, to the side of the errant mother in question, Mrs Erlynne.Direction is by Fred Paul, a now forgotten figure, though he was well known as an actor and director in the silent era. As an actor, he was famous for playing clean-cut heroes such as Nayland Smith, intrepid nemesis of the villainous Dr Fu Manchu. His direction ofLady Windermere's Fanis stolid and unadventurous. Essentially he shoots it as theatre, the camera taking up a fixed frontal position from which it rarely budges. The acting is mostly in keeping with Paul's approach--the cast give very much the same performances they must have perfected on the West End stage. The liveliest scene, oddly enough, takes place at a dog show (a venue that plays no part in Wilde's original), where Paul favours the dogs with a lot more close-ups than he ever grants to his actors. This print is the version distributed in the USA by DW Griffith's Triangle company, and a few clumsy cuts early on may be the result of US censorship. Nicholas Brown's music, specially commissioned for this release, is scored for piano trio, and neatly captures the edgy, genteel flavour of the period. --Philip Kemp

If you read any of my other book reviews you would find it hard to believe that I have studied English Literature upto A level standard ( even obtaining a grade A) as I do read an awful lot of easy reading books, chick-lit etc., but every now and then I do dig out the odd classic to re-read.
I have always liked Oscar WIlde's plays finding them very humerous.
"OSCAR WILDE"
Born Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (16 October 1854 – 30 November 1900) he was Irish playwright, poet . He also wroye a lot of short stories and one novel, and is most famous ( in the literary world) for his humour. Below are some of his famous quotes:
America had often been discovered before Columbus, but it had always been hushed up.
The only thing to do with good advice is pass it on. It is never any use to oneself.
Work is the curse of the drinking classes.
I love acting. It is so much more real than life.
A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal.
Wilde became the most successful Victorian playwright and a hugh celebrity of his day.
On 29 May 1884 he married Constance Lloyd and they had two sons - Cyril (1885) and Vyvyan (1886). It is thoiught that it was the year after his wedding that Wilde became aware of his homosexuality.
As the result of his well publicised series of trials Wilde was convicted of "gross indecency" with other men.He was imprisoned for two years hard labour, first in Pentonville and then in Wandsworth prison in London, and finally transferred in November to Reading Prison. He was known as prisoner C. 3.3, (which described the fact that he was in block C, floor three, cell three) he was not, at first, even allowed paper and pen. After he was released from prison he sailed to France. He never returned to Ireland or Britain and Constance took the surname Holland for herself and the boys.

.The plot is set by a series of misunderstandings and deceptions in the better off classes of Victorian London.

"THE SCENES OF THE PLAY"
ACT I. Morning-room in Lord Windermere's house. ACT II. Drawing-room in Lord Windermere's house. ACT III. Lord Darlington's rooms. ACT IV. Same as Act I.
TIME: 1892 PLACE: London.
There are two major theme's in the play - hypocricy and the 'bad mother'. Most of the characters in this play accept hypocrisy as being necessary part if their life in their social whirl. As when Dumby agrees with Mrs. Stutfield that the season has been ‘‘delightful,’’ and then straight away agrees with the Duchess of Berwick that it has been ‘‘dreadfully dull.’’
With regards to the 'bad mother' theme, you have to remember that the play was written at a time when the Suffragette movement was in it's prime. In Victorian society women who wanted to "leave home" were often portrayed as evil, and taking the 'male role' in society. The "bad mother" is Erlynne in the play, as she leaves to pursue her own life.Oscar Wilde supported the feminist movement, he even edited a magazine called The Woman's world, which published articles on each side of the suffrage issue.
The plot is about Lady Winderemere who goes from being the epitomy of Victorian society lady to a woman of wandering morals. She is pulled up by the very woman who pulls her up is the one she suspected of being her husband's mistress ( in here lies the twist).
t's a comedy of society manners and morals with melodramatics from Lady Windermere, a captivating and surprising plot and some wonderful quips, in the great Oscar Wilde tradition. Example: "Well, there's nothing in the world like the devotion of a married woman. It's a thing no married man knows anything about."
Don't be put of with the age or setting of the play or the social aspect. It is still applicable to our society today -although we judge now with less criticism and more understanding.
Advantages: easy to read, funny and quaint Disadvantages: too short
Oscar Wilde was a literary genious.
This lovely little play is one of his best, it is very funny, beautifully written and very easy to read.
This would be a great introduction for anyone to Oscar Wilde.
There is much misunderstanding throughout the play, people have 'shocking' secrets which all come undone, of course the secrets would not be seen as shocking today, but that is part of the delight of Wilde, we can enjoy the innocence and fun, without ...

...be absolutely awful. Done badly, Lady Windermere, her husband and others seem no more than two dimensional, cut-out characters of those found in higher society of Wilde's era. Mrs.Erlynne becomes an intolerable bitch and Darlington seems ever so creepy. However, done well, one sees a comical and critical take on 'whatever people call Society nowadays', telling an intricate tale of deceit, love, money and scandal. I wont ruin the secrets of the play, ...

So many book, so little time. Compared with some I consider myself well-read, compared with the number of books on the market I feel I?m hardly literate. Rarely do I read a book a second time although I´ve got lots which would be worth it.
Why have I decided to honour this novel with a second perusal? I read the German translation in my teens and since then OscarWilde has always been with me, so to speak. I´ve read his children´s stories, seen on the stage and read with my students The Importance Of Being Earnest, been to a brilliant West End performance of LadyWindermere´sFan and have seen the film on OscarWilde starring Stephen Fry.
What has always pleased me is Wilde´s use of the English language, his witty apercus and aphorisms. I like using those myself with the difference that I don´t invent many not being a genius ...
