Discovery TD5 ES 7
Advantages: Goes and carries everything, everywhere. Disadvantages: Not quickly....
I've owned the Discovery for 2 years now. Yes it's had problems, a lot of these were down to previous owner and where he took it for repairs though. I rebuilt the head after gasket failure, only to find someone had already been in there and 'bodged' it. Radweld should be banned.....
After getting it running like it should do, I can say that I will keep this car as long as it still runs. It does everything. It goes everywhere. It carries and pulls ... ...the Disco does the job perfectly. Carries all the kit, no problems. Camping in the summer, not a problem. The Discovery will take you anywhere.... just not quickly. Off road, you will not find better (and yes mine does go off road, regularly).
Fuel consumption is between 28-30 mpg. Mind you, I don't do stop start journeys, and it's very rare I travel at peak times, so my figures may be higher than others.
Tyres are expensive, but go buy a set of ...

Land Rover Freelander TD4 Adventurer 5dr Stationwagon
Advantages: Off Road, Easy to drive, ENGINE Disadvantages: Service, Interior is boring,.
The Land Rover Freelander is one of Land Rovers most popular cars of the last few years, and its understandable for my experiences. It’s a 2005 “55” plate facelifted Freelander. In black, which is without doubt one of the best colours- along with silver.
My dad owned the TD4 Adventurer, but I drove it everywhere. It has a 1951CC Diesel Engine, which was virtually the same as you get in the 2.0D BMWs. Its an excellent engine, it pulls well upto 70mph ... ...fuel pump fitted correctly and Land Rover sent someone out the morning after, supplying a courtesy Discovery car as well. The car was taken for a service, around 8 months after purchase, where the mechanics “found” there was a leak on something and the intercooler needed servicing, however they didn’t realise it was still under warranty and tried to charge £500, Which they eventually did for nothing when they found out. But I doubt that if they realised ...

Freelander, why not?
Advantages: Space, comfort, road view, exterior looks Disadvantages: plastic, lack of seat adjustment
I agree with Fast Freddie, on this...
I did a lot of research on the Freelander before I bought one, I went for a 1999 1.8 XEI 3 door hard top.
I paid 1350 for mine and have had it for 3 months now and done roughly 3000 miles.
My Freelander had no serivce history but was recently taxed, MOT'd and serviced at a local garage.
So far I have had very few faults, and those that I have had were rather uncostly and good on the wallet.
Tyres for 100 ... ...pounds.
A must for all owners in the Haynes manual, it helps with so many things, and I have been able to do a bit of DIY like replace the throttle body and the motor in the passenger side window.
You can write to the DVLA and for 5 pounds I think they will release details of previous owners, luckily I only had 2 and contacted them for details of which I did get.
In relation to other comments, The K series engine is actually a decent little engine, ...

Freelander Commercial Diesel
Advantages: Great work horse with a cavernous back Disadvantages: Poor visibility when reversing horse trailer - especially to the left.
I have owned my 2.0d x reg Freelander diesel Commercial (van jobber) for 2 years had 80,000 on the clock when i got it and now has over 100,000. It had rather a lot wrong with it when i got it, all the usual problems but as hubby is in the trade it wasnt to bad to fix her up and as she is a van she was pretty cheap to buy. I have 3 horses so this is my vehicle to cater for their needs. The permanent 4 wheel drive has got me out of some sticky situations ... ...shows, which in our climet are usually rainy and muddy and the Freelander tows through mud beatifully and I have never got stuck yet. Though visibility with the hardback with no windows can at times be tricky for reversing the trailer especially back to the left, but the wing mirrors are of a good size.
Being a van the space in the back is cavenous just right for all the parifinalia i have to truck round, and I can get a fair amount of bales in ...
