"Off-roading made classy"

I had Disco 2 TD5 for a year and a half now and am very pleased with it. It's just as capable off-road as a Defender, but much more comfortable and will get you there in style. Reliability is generally not a problem - unless you count broken front differential, amongst other things, but mine is a proper off-roader, and is used accordingly.
Mine is a "facelift" model, reg late 2002, and I recommend it over the earlier ones, mostly because of active cornering system, which makes driving nearly 3 tons worth of machinery a relatively easy task. Can't comment on MPG, because my car is by no means standard - the engine is chipped for power, mud-terrain tyres and suspension lift are not exactly fuel-saving features either. But then, if you want fuel economy, you buy a Prius.
Repairs can be expensive like everything Land Rover. But the car can take a lot of damage and still get you home. Not the easiest to repair in the field, but it's possible, and most of you will never do it anyway;-)
Of course its age shows - inside it's nowhere near as classy as its younger siblings, but quite comfortable and ergonomic. Aircon is surprisingly effective.
Road handling is what you expect from a (reasonably) modern car. Standard version TD5 is not quick though - consider Autologic power upgrade, which will add another £400 to the final bill. The diesel itself is very elastic - it pulls equally well at 1800 and 4500 RPM, although gets quite noisy at high revs.
Overall, if you're considering buying a 4x4, Discovery 2 should be near the top of your list. It has the pedigree, it's still (mostly) mechanical car - if your active cornering system fails, you'll still make it to base without it, it's miles ahead of a Defender in terms of comfort and it can take you anywhere just as easily. Spares are easy to find, and if you look after your Landy it will last you a lifetime.
