Discovery TD5 ES 7

Advantages: Goes and carries everything, everywhere.
Disadvantages: Not quickly....

I've owned the Discovery for 2 years now. Yes it's had problems, a lot of these were down to previous owner and where he took it for repairs though. I rebuilt the head after gasket failure, only to find someone had already been in there and 'bodged' it. Radweld should be banned..... After getting it running like it should do, I can say that I will keep this car as long as it still runs. It does everything. It goes everywhere. It carries and pulls ...
...the Disco does the job perfectly. Carries all the kit, no problems. Camping in the summer, not a problem. The Discovery will take you anywhere.... just not quickly. Off road, you will not find better (and yes mine does go off road, regularly). Fuel consumption is between 28-30 mpg. Mind you, I don't do stop start journeys, and it's very rare I travel at peak times, so my figures may be higher than others. Tyres are expensive, but go buy a set of ...

Why NOT to buy a Disco 4.0 V8

Advantages: Practical, comfortable, easy drive. Looks that do not seem to have aged
Disadvantages: Thirsty, Expensive to service, Poor brakes, sadly unreliable and terrible after-sales service

Approximately 4 years ago, my ageing father after much deliberation decided he wanted a 4 wheel drive. He had said for months that they needed a suitable vehicle for going on their days out on the Moors of North Yorkshire and the Holidays to remote parts of Britain with their 2 dogs. So off we went to the local Landrover dealer In Pickering. and were promptly sold a Landrover 4.0 V8 GS model with 5500 miles on the clock, all very clean and well presented ...
...thought this was wonderful and all was well for approximately 12 months. Then it went for its annual service with the main dealer where we bought it from having covered around 4000 miles and this was the beginning of the problems which were never cured. Somehow they managed to upset the engine management system and the vehicle never ran properly after that. It was lumpy on tickover and smelt dreadfully of petrol from the Exhaust all the time like ...

Road Handling

Looks

Go anywhere transport.

Advantages: Powerful and fun.
Disadvantages: Minor niggles and fuel economy.

...fitted to many Rovers and Land Rovers over the years. A well tried and trusted engine that can be tweaked to gain more power. I paid £3000 for it used back in about 2001 I think. Mine was the one of the early ones with 3 doors (H plate), it had the go any where ability which you expect of a land rover product. The V8 was helpful in this respect. Unfortuantly I had to sell it as it required alot of expense for the MOT, but if there had been no problems ...
...mechanical problems due to the fact it had done well over 100,000 miles but the engine was still strong. I had upgraded the air filter to a K&N filter which i found gave slightly more power as the engine could breathe better and the maintainance was easier. The minor niggles i had with it were the rear door could only be opened from the inside due to a tiny spring breaking in the door mechanism. I tried to fix it but didnt have the dexterity to ...

Road Handling

Looks

Off-roading made classy

Advantages: Enormously powerful off-roader, quite comfortable and relatively easy to fix and maintain
Disadvantages: Hungry and noisy, needs ECU upgrade to fully exploit its capabilities

...can be expensive like everything Land Rover. But the car can take a lot of damage and still get you home. Not the easiest to repair in the field, but it's possible, and most of you will never do it anyway;-) Of course its age shows - inside it's nowhere near as classy as its younger siblings, but quite comfortable and ergonomic. Aircon is surprisingly effective. Road handling is what you expect from a (reasonably) modern car. Standard version TD5 ...
...will add another £400 to the final bill. The diesel itself is very elastic - it pulls equally well at 1800 and 4500 RPM, although gets quite noisy at high revs. Overall, if you're considering buying a 4x4, Discovery 2 should be near the top of your list. It has the pedigree, it's still (mostly) mechanical car - if your active cornering system fails, you'll still make it to base without it, it's miles ahead of a Defender in terms of comfort and it ...
