The time had come to leave behind childish things such as my trusty Peugeot 106 who had accompanied me faithfullly through the last three years; 13 years old and only 20, 000 miles on the clock... I had decided to go upmarket and go for a car that would easily accomodate my husband, my daughter. black labrador and all the paraphenalia that tends to come with us.
My husband spotted the Land Rover at our local car dealer and at £4995 seemed a good deal as an S Reg with only 40.000 miles. I loved the look of it, gleaming like new in a turquoise haze, and was eager to take it for a test drive.
That's when we realised how noisy the engine was. There was also a suspicious whirring sound coming from the back wheel on the passenger side. Despite our initial reservations we asked a friend who owns a garage to take a look.
His first impression was that it stank of dog, but we didn't notice so marked it as a moot point. Discussions followed using words like Dif, and transmission which didn't mean a great deal to me but obviously did to my friend and my husband. The conclusion was that the car was sound, and I loved the look of the car along with the elevated position I commanded, also the feeling of safety and security. I found that it handled well, the power steering was a dream after the Peurgot, so we parted with the cash and took our baby home.
Things went downhill from there. The problem was the immobiliser. Neither my husband or myself could get to grips with it, and we spent at least half an hour trying to either get the bloody thing to start or stop the horn sounding. The final straw came when after not having driven it for two days I decided I needed to go shopping. Could I get it to start? Could I heck. After a frustrating twenty minutes which consisted of me frantically pressing buttons on the keyfob, getting in and out of the car, locking and unlocking and desperately turning the key in the ignition, I called the garage and told them what I thought.
This resulted in them coming over, and spending 10 minutes trying to start the car before telling me that I had confused the alarm system by pressing too many times on the key fob and promising to take it to the garage to get the alarm reset. This he duly did and all is well again.....for now.
The verdict? Nice drive, but noisy and temperamental. I noted with interest the previous review about the head gaskett and would recommend that before you buy one of these you get it checked. Mine has had its gaskett replaced for the same reason - this is fairly typical for this model - Land Rover know all about it and if you complain loud enough to them , they will fix it ie replace it .
I agree with Fast Freddie, on this...
I did a lot of research on the Freelander before I bought one, I went for a 1999 1.8 XEI 3 door hard top.
I paid 1350 for mine and have had it for 3 months now and done roughly 3000 miles.
My Freelander had no serivce history but was recently taxed, MOT'd and serviced at a local garage.
So far I have had very few faults, and those that I have had were rather uncostly and good on the wallet.
Tyres for 100 ... ...pounds.
A must for all owners in the Haynes manual, it helps with so many things, and I have been able to do a bit of DIY like replace the throttle body and the motor in the passenger side window.
You can write to the DVLA and for 5 pounds I think they will release details of previous owners, luckily I only had 2 and contacted them for details of which I did get.
In relation to other comments, The K series engine is actually a decent little engine, ...

My partner decided she wanted a Freelander because of the image and ... ...young kid).
When she makes her mind up she wants a particular motor, that's it.
We went to our local Range Rover dealer and within a short space of time the ink was dry on the Contract. No matter that I told the Salesman I was not buying the car, it was my partner, he kept looking at me when explaining the features and trying to get a decision. In the end I walked off and got a cup of coffee
We previously had a Renault Scienic which was a reasonable ...

Advantages: Excellent, unobstructed view for driver, spacey interior, useful wind-down back window, economical, great towing Disadvantages: loss of power up hills, can have mechanical problems
This vehicle is Great for a younger person, as it has a cheaper group for the insurance than most other 4x4's with it's 1.8 engine. With most other 4x4's having 2.0, 2.5 engines, I needed a 4 wheel drive but could not get/ afford the insurance with being just over 20 at the time.
This vehicle competes well against other 4x4's in aspects of: TOWING, using a horse box I moved home in 3 trips and having put all the white goods in one trip I didn't ... ...to tow horses up and down the windy highland roads.
It's ECONOMICAL petrol consumption. It is very SPACIOUS, I used my Freelander to move house filling it full to bursting and on the 400 + miles on country road and A roads it still managed an average of 37 to the gallon. This vehicle has exceptional performance in snow and ice,you do not even know it is slippy under foot till you get out and fall on your back side! This is due to the vehicle being ...

Advantages: All electric, landrover, good looking 4x4 Disadvantages: Thirsty, expensive to service
When I first got my Freelander special edition I was quite overwhelmed by the changes it made to my lifestyle. I was driving at a height that allowed much better road vision and presence(a great driving experience). The car has traction control/hilldescent and all the other electrics you could want. I was drawn to the Freelander because I wanted something that was goodlooking, functional in the area I live in and allowed me to go explore places like ... ...space for the driver and passengers I am quite tall and squeezing into a little hatchback was becoming tedious on a regular basis. The Freelander I chose was a special edition serengetti 1.8 twin cam and had some gorgeous Trek alloys different to the most popular ones which are nothing special in my eyes. It also has a nice patterned interior which is second to the leather with heated seats but it really is a nice modern cloth design and I would ...

...to this point i thought Land rover couldn't produce anything so useless, but i suppose thats what you get when you try to mix motor manufactures. If you've read this don't be put off, just look for the original Land rover Discovery range, they are excellent as are Range rovers and both are still being produced. If the Freelander was so good why are still making the Discovery?
Bottom line, It's your choice but i would DEFINITELY seek a test drive ...

Advantages: Great Service and Super Staff Disadvantages: Limited Parking at dealers
When deciding to change my adorable Fiat Multipla I decided that I wanted something more solid and comfy.
Whilst out for a drive I called in at the local LandRover Dlr (Broadfields of Bishop Stortford) and test drove a Freelander ES (3dr 1.8). WOW what comfort, at 6'4' I had more than enough space and plenty of room for the shopping. Luxury leather seats, Air Conditioning and a Multidisc CD changer. I was even able to take of my Targa panel and hardback in the summer so the pose value was also great. The guys in the dealer were really helpful and the unlimited coffee (served in china) was of a good quality and not from a Clinx machine. When I took the car for a service (although quite pricy @ £550) the sales guy even remembered my name and offered me a coffee before I drove off in my courtesy car. Whenever I have been in ...
