Here we go again...

Advantages: Bene!
Disadvantages: Non!

...or prius visum, as the Latin would have it. The first volume was presented to me many years ago after I had completed a Latin seminar (what would turn out to be the last of my language courses as an undergraduate). It was a wonderful gift, and I have found much use for the various phrases, and an extraordinary amount of humour that can be derived from the blandest of statements when translated into Latin. It was a gift that was so appreciated by ...
...Who said Latin wasn't useful? Henry Beard, in this volume and its predecessor, demonstrates that it is very useful, and not just for identifying a dish on a menu in Rome that looks suspiciously like the Latin word for 'eel'. One might ask the question, if the first volume was entitled 'Latin for All Occasions', how could one have a second volume? Isn't all, well, all? According to Henry Beard, peccavisum! (We goofed!) Luckily for us, goofs like this ...

Illud iterum dicere potes!

Advantages: Bene!
Disadvantages: Non!

...after I had completed a Latin seminar (what would turn out to be the last of my language courses as an undergraduate). It was a wonderful gift, and I have found much use for the various phrases, and an extraordinary amount of humour that can be derived from the blandest of statements when translated into Latin. For example, the innocuous phrase 'Darn! There goes my beeper!' becomes quite funny in Latin: Heu! Tintinnuntius meus sonat! One has visions ...
...there be a word in Latin for beeper (or bleeper)? Such things did not exist. Author Henry Beard had to improvise, but then again, that is what langauges have been doing, well, at least since the Roman times. One can see the derivative of the proposed word for beeper in the same word for the inner-ear disturbance ttinnitus. Beepers are often disturbances of the outer ear, so the word fits. Alas, there is no single symposium on the additions to Latin ...

Begining to learning Norsk? Then try: Teach Yourself Norwegian.

Advantages: Taught by an actual Norwegian who does it for a living.
Disadvantages: Can seem quite daunting at first. Took me 3 months to start using the book and CD properly

...the popular "Teach Yourself..." comes Teach Yourself Norwegian by Margaretha Danbolt Simons who is herself, a Norwegian now living and teaching in England. So there is no better book to get than this one! From first glance, it seems quite a daunting prospect learning a language without going to a class and it could take you a while to get going. It's based for the first time learners out there, but some prior exposure to Norwegian could be useful. ...
...initial phase you will find yourself engrossed and starting to sound out words aloud without realising. The main gist of the book is thus: It's about 2 people named Sue (an English woman) and Arne (a Norwegian man in England) who meet in a cafe while Sue is practising from this book. Their relationship builds up from there as does your knowledge of written and spoken Norwegian. As you go on through the book, you follow the adventures both in England ...

What Do Ants, Tennis And Castanets Have In Common?

Advantages: Excellent introduction to phonics, fun, easy...Brilliant!
Disadvantages: I would have liked a demonstartion of pronunciation at the beggining of each song

...Mummy! Jolly Songs At the school there was a display showing the different equipment used to teach the children. Most of us parents were most interested in the Jolly Songs book and CD, as we'd heard our little one's singing the little ditties at home. The teacher told us that the book could be bought at the Early Learning Centre, and so I called in to buy it for home use. " When I watch a tennis game, t,t,t. t,t,t. When I watch a tennis ...
...Jolly Songs is a 24 page, A4 sized book. It doesn't look much at first, being quite flimsy and only having a thin card cover. On the front a CD is attached in a plastic wallet. I paid £9 for Jolly Songs at ELC, however I have since found it cheaper on Amazon for £6 new, or from £3 used. At the front there is no introduction or notes to parents, it goes right into the rhymes. Each page has 2 rhymes dedicated to a letter, a note telling you what tune ...

Watashi wa nihongo wo benkyou shite imasu!

Advantages: non threatening way to learn the most basic Japanese vocabulary, provides the hiragana
Disadvantages: lack of a pronunciation guide or integrated core study materials

...to a LOT of spoken Japanese these past few years, but with English subtitles on. We also have family traditions borrowed from Japan and Korea in our family, thanks to the military upbringing I had and the mix of cultures I encountered living on US bases. So, I thought, okay, why not? My second thought was, D'oh! Why did I not think to learn this earlier? Such as when I had a a pick of several native speakers? Anyway... Being home educators, and myself ...
...item. Beneath that is the Japanese word for that item written in hiragana, which is the first and simplest writing system that Japanese children and foreign language students learn. Beneath the hiragana is the word written in romaji (that is, with Western letters so that a foreigner can read the word phonetically). On the back of the card is the word for the item in English. The cards cover several different topics, such as primary colours, numbers ...
