Lansinoh
I wasn't a particularly good breast-feeder with my son. I gave up quite early before we had established a good way of going. It was painful, Id had a very bad natural delivery and at the time I didn't realise I was entering Post Natal Depression. Reluctantly I switched to formula feeding, despite having really wanted to Breast feed. It was the right decision for me. He thrived on formula and I was in a better place mentally when the responsibility of solely feeding my son was lifted. I entered my second pregnancy never intending to feed my baby after the pain Id had last time, but when they lifted her out after a trouble-free caesarean section and I had a rush of love for her I just couldn't stop myself and put her to the breast. She fed like a dream and we are still feeding a month later.
I love feeding her, but there is no possible way I would have gotten through the first few days without the support of my midwives, husband, and tubes and tubes of Lansinoh breastfeeding cream. I even rang my mum from the hospital to ask her to buy me some!
As a novice to feeding (and I am really a novice, I wasn't very experienced at all after my failed attempt with my son) I made a few mistakes in the first few days that cost me my own comfort. My daughter is a comfort sucker, she likes the feeling of sucking like many newborns do and so while she seemed to be happily feeding and latched on initially, she would fall asleep while feeding, using me as a dummy so to speak. This left my nipples chapped and bruised, and even had a slight bleeding on the side she preferred. I asked the midwife in the hospital to help me and she came back with 2 mini-sized tubes of lansinoh, explained to me how to get my daughter on properly and how to ease her off the nipple by breaking her suck with my finger and eventually we got there. We started to feed without pain.
USING LANSINOH _______________
After every feed I got in to the habit of smearing a dot of Lansinoh over the chapped area. It is a greasy, very waxy substance that is designed to provide a wet barrier over the nipple and allow the skin to heal underneath. Lansinoh is 100% Lanolin. which is a natural substance that provides sheep with their own waterproof barrier so you can guess that it does something similar for the chapped skin; it effectively waterproofs the nipples so no more damage can occur while the nipple is not in use and the nipple can regain all its natural moisture which has been stripped by the baby nursing. And because it is a natural substance you can still feed your baby while you have the cream on. This is a huge bonus as with my son I had previously tried creams that had to be wiped off the nipple. Although this time around Im sure my daughter must think breasts are supposed to taste like lanolin!
PACKAGING ____________
The Box is not exciting, I wouldn't have lifted in the chemist unless I knew what it was- it is discrete, it doesn't have any images of breasts or nipples and the box simply says ' Lansinoh lanolin- for breastfeeding mothers' It is lilac which is the most distinctive thing about it. My mum had to ask in the chemist for it as she couldn't find it when she was looking for it. Discretion is not a bad aspect when you are buying products for your nipples, but it was difficult to find on the shelf if you hadn't seen the package before.
It comes in a tube of 56g, has a squeezy lid and flip top and can stand on the top so the cream will always be squeezable from the tube. The box has a small advert from the NCT (National Childbirth Trust) on one side offering breastfeeding support. I've never had to ring the help line as my midwives have been ever so helpful this time around but I've only ever heard good things about the NCT helplines from the Mother and baby magazines I subscribe to.
It is really rather thick and sometimes requires a really good squeeze to get some on your fingers but it applies really smoothly.
TASTE, TEXTURE AND SMELL ___________________________
Obviously when you are using a product for your baby you want to be sure its ok. And so, in the name of research I had to give the Lansinoh a little lick. It wasn't a particularly nice texture, but I couldn't find a distinguishable taste. It hasn't ever seemed to cause any discomfort to my daughter either, even if I have recently put a layer on the nipple she will still feed regardless.
Smell-wise I haven't noticed anything too offensive, I always use a breast pad between the nipple and my bra as it will leave yellow marks everywhere. (I love the NUK comfort breast pad- just a tip)
MY CONCLUSION _______________
Lansinoh works. I have no idea how, but within 3 days of getting a chapped nipple, the cream will have cleared it up. It is a miracle cream for mothers going through the early stages and as you get more experienced in feeding you will probably find you need it less and less. The tube is very expensive (about £9.99) but the hospital did give me some free sample sizes and it lasts quite a long time due to the thickness in consistency.
I think Lansinoh was one of the contributing factors to allowing me to feed my daughter when I was really on the brink of giving up. If you are expecting a baby and would like to Breast feed it would be worth having a tube at home and if you are on the brink of giving up breastfeeding, then just give this a try. I would almost promise you that you will find a difference very quickly!

WHAT IS LANSINOH?
------------------------------
Lansinoh is made from 100% Lanolin, which is a waxy substance found in sheep and other wool-bearing animals. It's secreted under their skin to act as a water-proof barrier and mostly is found in their wool. Ever wondered how sheep never minded the rain and cold? Now you know!
The idea of using this in a nipple cream ... ...like a scab on a wound, which lets the nipple gain back its moisture. The main reason breast-feeding nipples crack is the lack of moisture, which is taken from you when your child feeds, therefore, somehow you need to let your nipple get that back in a short amount of time.

Lansinoh
After the birth of my daughter, the gorgeous and currently snoozing Eva Rose, I had quite a time of it with the whole breastfeeding milarky. Now firstly, for all you soon to be mums out there, don't believe anyone who says breastfeeding doesn't hurt. To begin with, maybe for a week, maybe for two, you will have some discomfort as your nipples get used to being food distributors for the duration. Getting your baby latched on properly, and ... ...help, but if you do nothing else, get a tube of this and carry it around with you wherever you go once baby has arrived.
What is it?
Well despite being incredibly hard to pronounce, and rather difficult to find in shops (try a big Boots store, the smaller ones don't seen to stock it), it is literally, or at least was in my case, miracle cream. Made from 100% medical grade lanolin, with no additives, it is a wonderful way to soothe and protect sore ...

...that for my friends’ pregnancies, Lansinoh wasn’t available in the UK. Orders were placed on the internet or American relatives were dispatched off to local pharmacies. However, a year ago Lansinoh started to be sold in the UK – at Mothercare, Lloyds Pharmacy and Waitrose. So at my next visit to Mothercare, I bought a tube (£4.95). (1) It does not need to be removed prior to breastfeeding. This is a real bonus when you have so little time as a new mother. Anything that cuts down time, even if it is only 10 seconds, is a bonus.
(2) It is made of 100% Lansinoh Brand Lanolin (ultrapure medical grade lanolin), which is apparently why it is so effective. It also means that it is hypoallergenic – essential in such a ...

Advantages: Pure lanolin, hypoallergenic, EFFECTIVE, no need to clean off before a feed Disadvantages: price - but well worth it
Does this cream justify its hefty price tag (£9.99)? In a word - "YES". When I was pregnant and on a budget I didn't give much thought to breastfeeding, apart from the fact that I wanted to do it. It came as something of a surprise when I was in hospital with my little girl when my nipples hurt like made every time she fed. My feet curled up, I cried, and the kindly midwives brought me trial packs of Lansinoh. I couldn't believe the difference it ... ...have stopped breastfeeding there and then.
So what is it? Is is a highly refined pure lanolin cream that you apply to your nipples and thankfully do not have to remove before feeding. It is a natural, non-toxic product, that is kind to even the most sensitive skin. It has a strange colour and texture - like a thick, gloopy honey. This is because it hasn't been chemically bleached like cheaper products on the market.
When you start breastfeeding, ...

Advantages: highly effective and needs very little Disadvantages: expensive compared to other creams.
I tried every nipple cream going while first feeding my oldest daughter. And I didnt find any that I liked or that helped. On top of that my daughter screamed her head off when she could taste just the slightest bit of cream.. Advantages: help healing your cracked nipples, collect leaking breastmilk Disadvantages: when you lean forward a bit, breastmilk spills through the little holes
I just want to comment on the previous review and the problem of dry healing.
Dry healing is definetely not an option for anyone. In the beginning when your nipples are sore or cracked, you actually need to apply a nipplecream first and only then put on the breast shells. The nipples heal very well in between the feeds.
I used Lansinohcream which is the best I think, as you don't have to wash if off before breastfeeding your baby.
The ventilated shells were not much of a use for me, as the milk leaks from your nipples all the time and as you lean forward a bit, it spills through the holes.
After your breastfeeding is estableshed (a couple of months), the nipples will stop leaking and you can switch to normal breast pads then.
The nipples will stop getting sore after 2-3 weeks of breastfeeding.
You can buy a set ...
