Lansinoh promotes itself as 'the world's purest lanolin' and has been developped specifically for cracked and sore nipples. It claims to provide a moist environment which enables the healing process of cracked nipples and also creates a barrier for the raw nerve endings sometimes caused by breast feeding.
This is one of those rare products that does live up to the hype and does exactly what it promises to. It is by far the best nipple cream that I have found. I used both the Mothercare's own and Kamillosan and found them either lacking (Mothercare's own) or stinky and gas making for my baby (Kamillosan).
I was literally in tears with my health visitor and had worn a flanellette dressing gown and not left the house for 2 days as I could not let anything else touch my nipples. Even though they looked normal with no visible cracks my nipples felt like they had 3rd degree burns. My health visitor gave me a sample of Lansinoh and I ended up buying a tube from Mothercare.
Lansinoh is smooth and has a Vaseline like texture but much nicer (almost identical to the texture of Elizabeth Arden's 8 hour cream - hey, perhaps I will try it on my face!). It is a strange shade of green which is a little offputting but the smell is far less offensive than other brands and best of all you don't have to wipe it off before breastfeeding so it makes the whole event much less painful (if at all) in that difficult settling in period. One of the more expensive brands but well worth it. If you opt for trying cheaper brands first you will end up spending 3 times as much before getting this anyway. It has a pleasant (but uninspiring) design and is £9-£10 for a 56g tube. It is just lanolin without the apothecary of other ingredients that most other brands have so both you and your baby are less likely to have any adverse reactions. It can also be used as a moisturiser (see above) or for dry skin, chapped lips, minor scalds and burns and anything else you can think of. See below for some of the various things I have used it as. A great product to keep in your handbag even after breastfeeding has finished.
If you have sore nipples invest in this wonder product. If your breastfeeding is going fine with no pain then invest in it anyway and use it to prevent any problems (I was fine with breast feeding and thought I had avoided the sore nipples until they suddenly started to hurt when my baby was 3 weeks old).
OTHER IDEAS TO TRY WITH LANSINOH; FEET - slather on dry skin just before bed paying particular attention to your heels and put on cotton socks. Remove in the morning and be sure to wear your prettiest sandals HANDS - put a thick layer on your hands and lay back for 10 minutes then remove with a dry face flannel for beautifully soft hands FACE - use as an intensive moisturiser, to smoothe down wayward eyebrows, to add a sheen to your cheekbones or mixed with some glitter or shimmer powder to add a bit of glitz LIPS - use a thin layer as a lip balm, a thick layer as a lipgloss or mix a little with your favourite lipstick in a small pot for a sheer summery version of a colour that you already like- a personally customised lip gloss.
I could go on forever (removes stuck rings from your fingers, etc) but i will end it here and just leave you to experiment yourself.
TOP TIP: If you really don't want to splash out don't bother with any of the other brands but do try vaseline on your nipples after each feed. It is 99p and is the next best thing to Lasninoh

Advantages: help healing your cracked nipples, collect leaking breastmilk Disadvantages: when you lean forward a bit, breastmilk spills through the little holes
