As a sufferer from CERD (Chronic Esophageal Reflux Disease) I should like to let you know about a drug which I use regularly. I have been the victim of “heartburn” and “acid indigestion” left incorrectly treated over a period of some 10 years. This meant I had a severe burning sensation in my esophagus (food pipe) following eating or drinking – of all foods none in particular. Another common symptom would be constant “gas” resulting in frequent belching or burping. Below is a somewhat detailed description of this drug’s uses and side effects.

Before I continue, I would like to remind you all that this is a POM (Prescription Only Medicine).

How I Take This Medication
It is taken by mouth (orally) usually once a day as soon as you get up. I would recommend that you take this before drinking any coffee or eating any breakfast. Note: Significantly less of the drug will be absorbed if taken after a meal rather than before eating.

Side Effects
However unlikely, some nausea or stomach pain may occur. If these effects continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your doctor if you develop diarrhea, rapid heartbeat (tachycardia), muscle pain, chest pain, changes in stool color, stomach pain, breathing trouble, mood changes or vision changes.

Precautions
Tell your doctor if you have any pre-existing liver disease or if you have any allergies.

Drug Interactions
Tell your doctor of any over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription medication you may be taking including sucralfate (for ulcers) iron, theophylline (for asthma or chronic bronchitis), ampicillin (antibiotic) digoxin (heart problems) or ketoconazole (for fungal infections).

Storage
Store this medication at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees C) away from heat and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children.

I am writing this from personal experience – I have tried various POM medications like Nexium (Esomeprozole), Prilosec (Omeprazole), and OTC medications including Zantac (Ranitidine), Pepsic AC (Famotidine), Tagament (Cimetidine), all in prescription strength. I’ve taken the less effective preparations like “Tums”, “Gaviscon”, “Maalox”, “Mylanta II” etc. None work as well as Prevacid for me, and it means that I can eat or drink anything I like without worrying about any discomfort.

My conclusion is that nothing is as effective in controlling heartburn or acid reflux as Prevacid. In my job as a Pharmacy Technician I see this drug prescribed to 95 per cent of the patients in the hospital where I work: WVU Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, WV.

Not enough in the op that I wouldn't find either on a patient info leaflet or on the Wyeth website. I'd rather know that if you do suffer from a touch of acid reflux that this tablet will allow to go to bed on a full stomach. My remedy for an acid stomach is to keep away from fizzy drinks, including lager, and overly spiced foods. But if I fancy a night out with the boys where I know I'll end up having a curry and several pints then what better start to the night than 30 migs of that ol' trusty H+ pump inhibitor Zoton - believe me it works and is better than Zantac!

I am glad that you have found some relief at least, it must be miserable for you. I suffer from time to time but usually gaviscon does the trick, good luck.
