Oh, You're So Cool.....Laptop Cooling Lounge Advantages: I no longer have hot legs! Disadvantages: Noise level ...I decided to try the Belkin Laptop Cooling Lounge. Several things led me to this decision - price (mine was £19.21 from Digital Fusion), functionality (a cooler you can use on your lap is a plus point, and one that fits up to 17" laptops) and user reviews on other sites (generally positive) all contributed. The Product What did I get for my £19.21? The 'Lounge' is a USB powered external fan built into a white plastic pad (quite large, and tray-like ... ...The pad is intended for use on your lap (makes sense, although it could just as easily be used on a desk, and height can be adjusted to a level comfortable for the user via a plastic strip on the back. There is a sizeable lip on the front of the pad which stops your laptop slipping. The box states "Cool, Adjust, Relax" and has a picture of a smiley lady lounging about on her immaculate sofa and equally immaculate carpet. Belkins' knee cushion! Advantages: Relatively lightweight; makes using a laptop more comfortable Disadvantages: Slightly pricey; bland colours ...and 42 at the bottom. Belkin have tried to make this as ergonomic as possible for laptop users, because the angle my laptop sits at means that I get a clear view of the screen and don't have to lean forward or backward to get a better look. Since I bought it I've found it's so much easier than just having my computer on my lap. It keeps the laptop stable when I'm typing by absorbing any movement and so my legs don't feel the constant keystrokes. ... ...be the colour. I'm sure Belkin could have made these in a more attractive colour than just grey. Although, as I said, the 'pocket' together with the little rubber Belkin tag is green, it's barely noticeable and the overall appearance is somewhat bland. A quick scour around some of the major retailers convinced me that they were all, bar a few, priced around the same price. I knew that I wanted a bag which was smart enough to carry to work and to meetings related to work, but which was equally able to withstand some knocking about. Advantages: Simple, quick way of commuting between desks with a laptop Disadvantages: Takes a bit of space p on your desk, compared to simple laptop use This HP docking station is a really useful piece of equipment. For those of you who have not used one before, what ia docking does is connect to all the peripherals on your desk. So you plug it in using its adapter and you can connect a mouse, a keyboard and a printer to it using USBs. You can connect a monitor to, if you want to, which I have. What's the point? Well what it means on a daily basis is that you can perhaps do away with the need for ... ...you could plug different people's HP laptops into it if you wanted to operate a hot desk with it. Good Hardware, Bad Software Advantages: Cheap, Works Disadvantages: Poor software ...is different for Linux users (specifically Ubuntu 7.10). While Freecom does not officially support Linux, Realtek (who make the DVB chipset) have released a driver that has been modified for easy installation by the Ubuntu community (just search the forum).
