A quality notebook at a bargain basement price
Review of AOpen 1556GL - no CPU - 15" TFT by
jennyd60
Advantages: Tailor Made Spec, Robust Quality build. Nice looking, Good Value, Easy to upgrade
Disadvantages: Needs a high level of technical competance. One or two parts can be difficult to obtain.
...DVD-writer in place of the AOPEN reccomended model, then you will have to make up a small retaining bracket which isn't supplied with the case. Reasonably easy to do... but you do need some technical skills.
Assembly took about 2 hours once I had realised the need to make a retaining clip for the DVD drive. There are no instructions supplied. But if you use common sense it is pretty obvious how it all comes apart and goes back. Just DONT force anything. ... ...the wrong way... ! You can also find hints on the web by via a google search (sorry but I cant recall the URLS)
As far as performance and quality in use is concerned, the end result is excellent and I am well pleased. Battery life is over and hour and a half. Weight is higher than my mac, but by no means shoulder breaking. I am running SAGE - some photo editing software, a web design package, a basic video and audio editing programme and it all ...

Good solid business laptop
Review of Dell Vostro 1500 by
supermushroom
Advantages: Cheap, mean little machine
Disadvantages: Heavy, non-linux compatable
...just the best buy and Dell are known to be a respectable no frills brand which helped. It's worth noting that my Dell came with a lot of bundled software, slowing it down slightly. It was a litttle trouble to format a new laptop and install the drivers again, but the machine has been satisfactory ever since! The ram seems to work well, the hardware (bluetooth, wireless, DVD, Webcam etc) are top quality and are well integrated to work with each other. ... ...fully linux compatable yet, since i tried booting it up with Kubuntu, and unsuccessfully tried to get all the hardware to work for 4 months. It was okay though, just double check if you plan to use linux (you're better off going for a linux-ready dell). Also, it's meant for small businesses which means it's a little heavy and not the best machine for you to lug it around everywhere (especially if you're a student!). Having said that, i don't have ...

Dell Latitude D830
Review of Dell Latitude D830 by
lillilmike
Advantages: Security, Speed, Easy to travel with.
Disadvantages: Once some settings are change theres no going back.
I own this Dell Latitude D830 it is a very fast, very reliable piece of equipment. It has dual core so its pretty good for gaming also with a very good video card. I wouldn't recommend it for the highest newest games but its very good to get you playing some of the recent games. It runs all sorts of O.S. so thats a plus. Compatible with most software. It can hold up to 4 gigs of ram. Easy lite weight, goof for the average business man and or student. ... ...items. Comes with some good dell utilities too. Such as blue tooth, secure storage, embassy security, and also my favorite a TRACKER. So if it is ever lost or stolen you can call tell and they can track it down. So all in all its a very good piece of equipment. I recommend it ! ...

A brilliant laptop in every single way
Review of Acer TravelMate 2414WLMi - Celeron M 380 1.6 GHz - 15.4" TFT by
ecommercesurveyor
Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: Nothing
I have had this laptop for three years now and I have had real fun with it. It has been all around the UK, and it has worked perfectly every time. If you are a student or a graduate then I would advise this laptop, (strongly), because it is great for it's money. I got it for a £300 offer from Comet. It is light weight, with an excellent screen for watching Hollywood blockbuster. It has supreme sound and quick maneuverability, and super-fast speed. ... ...of memory and great for people on the go. I think this should be a top rated laptop, and I think it is a great bargain! It's keys are easy to use and it has a built in touch mouse! It also comes with Acrobat Reader! It has been fast, and quick to use from day 1. Any major retailer (including Ciao) will sell it to you. Great laptop, a must buy. A very sleek laptop. ...

Students or Budget minded pay attention
Review of HP Compaq Business Notebook nc4000 - Pentium M 1.4 GHz - 12.1" TFT by
ckhawk
Advantages: Very Portable, Good looks, Good battery life, ergonomical, great refurbished buy
Disadvantages: Multitasking not it's strong point
I write this review on this very laptop and i'm not going to beat about the bush its great. I bought this laptop on ebay a couple of months ago, i'm a student didn't have alot of money and wanted something to help me organise my essays and allowed me to work away from the desk (if your not a student you can still appreciate that sitting at a computer crouched on your desk is rather irksome after a while) and sitting in the garden in the sunshine ... ...i could fast forward life past exams so i was free....trust me.
All i required it to do was type and use the internet and was pleasantly surprised when it could do much more. The slowly down in running applications, internet and every day applications isn't really noticeable though dual cored models outshine it when it comes to multitasking. It can handle some games including quake 3, unreal tournament, but don't expect miracles primarily this is ...
