Introduction

Who could live without their laptop computer? Today everyone from gamers to grannies has their own laptop, complete with personal preferences from screen size to colour. Many of us prefer our laptops to desktop computers, even if we don't take them out of the house.

The days of complaints about poor battery power and over-heating are far behind us as innovation ensures all the essentials process effectively. Whether you’re a Mac fan or a die-hard PC lover, your ideal laptop is out there waiting for you to find it!

However, many laptop specs can seem confusing if you’re not familiar with the numbers and terminology used by vendors – and let’s face it, most of us aren’t. Luckily only a handful of these facts and figures are really essential; many are only useful if you’re after something particular from your laptop, for example, if its primary use will be playing networked games, or if you’re a designer looking to run a particular software package.

So what are the terms you do need to look out for? Our handy guide below will equip you with all the necessary information to identify what you really need from your laptop.

The essentials
1. CPU

The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is, in a nutshell, the ‘brain’ of your laptop. Working alongside the Operating System, the CPU processes the instructions you give the laptop and fetches data from the RAM to allow execution. Intel and AMD are the most well known brands of CPU.

2. RAM

Random Access Memory (RAM) provides space for your laptop to read and write data to be accessed by the Central Processing Unit (CPU). When people refer to a computer’s memory, they usually mean its RAM. The more RAM a computer has, the less often the CPU has to read data from the hard disk, allowing the computer to work significantly faster. If you’re planning to use the internet and several applications/software programs outside the core Microsoft Office suite, you should look for at least 2 Gigabytes of RAM. If you work with image, video or audio editing software you may want to increase this to as much as 4 Gigabytes to help improve running speed.

Benq Joybook Review

Advantages: Battery Life, Portability, Performance
Disadvantages: Could be zippier

...light PC to carry around. Benq is even kind enough to include a simple Polypropene (Think Wetsuit material) Slim Case for a little extra protection on the road. The included software is excellent, Windows XP Professional, NTI-CD Maker, Cyberlink DVD Viewer and maker, and Ulead Photo software. There is also some proprietary Q-music, and Q-Media software which help utilise hot keys and provide a worthy alternative to the windows media suite. A truly ...

Could have been better - Joybook

Advantages: Awesome design and taping quality
Disadvantages: A bigger RAM would do the job

...a justification. Probably BenQ was counting the passions when creating this notebook. Many times, things are getting old and aren't anymore so usable. BenQ Joybook A53 relies on this thing. The maker integrated in the design all kinds of lines that intersect and look like scratches, which easily attract attention. Well, the effect is unusual and rather interesting. This notebook model will make a perfect fit for the chat-lovers or people who have ...
...his special display technology - BenQ UltraVivid. You can observe that on the first meeting with this notebook - the image is more shining, the contrast is very good and if you want to watch some movies or clips, then you must know that the 8ms response time will do perfectly the job. Now, almost all notebook models have webcam and microphone onboard. Maybe people have started to love this type of communication. This model respects the rule. Even ...

Putting the Joy back into notebooks

Disadvantages: Short battery life, heats up quickly

...buy, I happened upon the BenQ JoyBook 8000 second hand & can't believe how packed with features it is. Appearance With a brushed steel effect cover & the Q Media buttons on the front, the JoyBook 8000 really is a classically stylish machine. The keyboard is very slightly translucent with deep blusih-grey keys, whilst there is a brass coloured strip around the edge of the case to stop it from looking too surgical. Acer Aspire 9300

Advantages: Wide screen, good graphics, good sound quality, range of new programmes, built in webcam
Disadvantages: You have to pay extra for bluetooth when purchasing, not a very long battery when unplugged.

Since I bought this product, 2 years ago, I have had not one problem or complaint. This laptop is really easy to use and is an amazing product to invest in. With it's simple and smart design, you cannot go wrong with it's appearance. There is a 17" wide screen monitor and a full keyboard with a touch pad for the mouse, there are buttons on the side for blue tooth and wireless enabling, that you can turn on and off when you please.
