IBM Thinkpad R50e, great value
Review of ThinkPad R50e 1834 - Pentium M 735 1.7 GHz - 15" TFT by
joshmills
Advantages: Robust design, trackpoint mouse.
Disadvantages: Only 2 usb ports
What a top class notebook for the price. Comes ready to use, straight out of the box, mine came with plenty of software to get me started on. The pentium processor and half a gig of ram, complete many tasks with ease. A nice matte 15" tft monitor, seems to resist scratches because of its non-shiny surface. It's trackpoint mouse takes a bit of time to get used too, but once you have cracked it, it is much better than the touchpads on most laptops. ... ...hand still, and just use the tip of your finger to control the ball, and your thumb to click on the right and left mouse buttons, stopping your wrist from aching from sliding your hand across a pad. Fast dvd drive, able to watch films flawlessly. Decent soundcard considering it is in a laptop. Easily upgradeable RAM modules, and hard drive. Average 40gig hard drive supplies most peoples needs, however, it only has 2 usb ports. All in all, a great ...

The hottest ThinkPad I have ever used
Review of ThinkPad G40 2388 - P4 2.8 GHz - 15" TFT by
DonnEdwards
Advantages: Very hot - great if you are in a cold climate
Disadvantages: Overheats
Pros: Nice big screen, fast P4 processor. When you pump it up to 1GB RAM it works quite well
You can put your coffee cup next to the cooling fan outlet and keep your coffee warm for hours. Great in cold climates.
It's got the IBM logo on the outside. Now that I know that IBM stands for "Its a Broken Machine" I'm no longer as thrilled. I am retiring the machine as a LAMP server and have moved my Windows apps to my Acer replacement laptop.
Cons:
... ...It was replaced under warranty, but they installed the wrong OS. When the correct OS was installed, it came with free spyware.
18 months later this laptop still overheats terribly, and the IBM workshop took 4 weeks to "fix" it and there is no improvement whatsoever. It's a terrible design flaw, and totally overpriced. I am using a replacement laptop (Acer Travelmate 2450) that is effectivly just as fast that costs a third of the price. ...

One book worth a read.
Review of Apple iBook G4 - PPC G4 1 GHz - 14.1" TFT by
Ideate
Advantages: Functionality, Speed, Look
Disadvantages: Minimal
Having not owned an Apple product before, i took a leap of faith into the unknown when i decided to buy this version, now i've had it for over 2years and i am still impressed. Even now it doesn't seem outdated with its slim 14" screen, sleek apple touch keyboard, and white gloss finish. It comes as standard with a 'slot' style loading drive which saves time and potential breakages. The laptop comes with quite a few trick features including colour ... ...hard drive - incase you drop it! The only niggles on this model are the USB port being on the left side which can make apple mice a reach for right handed people and its clunky 'plastic' style click on the track buttons. For the money prepare to be impressed! ...
