Introduction

Who could live without their laptop computer? Today everyone from gamers to grannies has their own laptop, complete with personal preferences from screen size to colour. Many of us prefer our laptops to desktop computers, even if we don't take them out of the house.

The days of complaints about poor battery power and over-heating are far behind us as innovation ensures all the essentials process effectively. Whether you’re a Mac fan or a die-hard PC lover, your ideal laptop is out there waiting for you to find it!

However, many laptop specs can seem confusing if you’re not familiar with the numbers and terminology used by vendors – and let’s face it, most of us aren’t. Luckily only a handful of these facts and figures are really essential; many are only useful if you’re after something particular from your laptop, for example, if its primary use will be playing networked games, or if you’re a designer looking to run a particular software package.

So what are the terms you do need to look out for? Our handy guide below will equip you with all the necessary information to identify what you really need from your laptop.

The essentials
1. CPU

The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is, in a nutshell, the ‘brain’ of your laptop. Working alongside the Operating System, the CPU processes the instructions you give the laptop and fetches data from the RAM to allow execution. Intel and AMD are the most well known brands of CPU.

2. RAM

Random Access Memory (RAM) provides space for your laptop to read and write data to be accessed by the Central Processing Unit (CPU). When people refer to a computer’s memory, they usually mean its RAM. The more RAM a computer has, the less often the CPU has to read data from the hard disk, allowing the computer to work significantly faster. If you’re planning to use the internet and several applications/software programs outside the core Microsoft Office suite, you should look for at least 2 Gigabytes of RAM. If you work with image, video or audio editing software you may want to increase this to as much as 4 Gigabytes to help improve running speed.

I love my Medion Laptop!

Advantages: Easy to use, nice big screen, very clear.
Disadvantages: Needs a bigger RAM!

Well, I was desperate for a laptop and seen this for a bargain price. Even though I had not heard of Medion, I just had a little faith and went for it! It's not a bad laptop. But as they say "You get what your pay for!" The ONLY problem I've had with it is the fact it doesn't have an excellent fan! I had only had the laptop 6 months and it kept cutting out (mainly becuase the way I sat with the laptop on my lap, which totally over heated the machine) ...
...if you are looking to purchase a laptop for media purposes (computer graphics, video editing, music programming..etc) I would not recommend this laptop UNLESS you are willing to upgrade the RAM. Which I found myself having to pay £30 to do as I produce alot of media. So, to wrap it up, I would say GREAT for a little basic computer stuff like writing up documents & surfing the web! ...

It's been OK until recently

Advantages: Pretty stable in terms of software (except the sound drivers)
Disadvantages: A bit too heavy and noisy, and certainly gets too hot

I have one, an Advent 7062. I've also had issues with having to frequently reinstall the sound drivers - although given that they're the AC'97 Realtek drivers, which have been reported as unstable on other laptops, it might be more of a software issue. But apart from that, and the occasional hiccup from the DVD drive which sometimes wouldn't play DVDs, it worked perfectly well from December 2004 until a few months ago, when it suddenly died on me. ...
...3 times it's had its motherboard replaced, and the last time I replaced the battery, which according to the engineers' report was faulty. I too am convinced it has design flaws. It's just as well I took out 3 years' cover from Dixons, otherwise the replacement motherboards would by now have cost more than I paid for the laptop in the first place. Oddly, in defiance of Sod's Law, these failures have started happening *before* the 3-year cover runs ...

Medion Laptop

Advantages: Really fast and easy to use
Disadvantages: Not as light as I'd like

Before we got this laptop we had a desktop PC with Windows 98, so I don't know whether it's that which influences my opinion or just the plain fact that this laptop is great! It comes with Windows XP home edition and its really easy to use. Its set up for wirelss internet too which is great. It has 4 different USB ports so you can have different things plugged in like modem, scanner etc. The only thing I don't like about this laptop is that it has ...
...it just annoys me a bit, cos i'm weird like that! But it has CDRW so you can make your own CDs for your own pleasure. Great stuff! There is one other thing, which is that I think this is quite heavy for a laptop. I don't know whether thats just me with my high expectations, but hey. Good thing about this is that we bought it from Woolworths in the Sale for £399! Bargain! ...

Medion MD 96480

Advantages: Looks stylish
Disadvantages: looks can be deceptive, not designed for sitting on ha ha

My medion lasted the 1 year warranty period. I may or may have not got ripped off with the price,. I bought it from woolworths for £349, in the sales last year. It comes with a 15.4 inch lcd screen which is a good size for watching dvds, it also comes with a dvd re-writer, though I think most laptops do nowadays. Its ram is around 892 mb, which is not quite 1gb as the company would have you belive. In the year I have had it, there have been some ...
...60 minutes left, it will then say low battery after ten minuites. I found it easier to use as a staionery computer so that it can have a regular power source. I have also found that the usb cables don't stay in very well, any slight movement and they fall out. Sound quality isn't brilliant. Mine came preloaded with windows vista basic. I think that if I buy a new one I may try the vista prenium, as basic is literlally basic and doesn't do very much ...

Medion 96100 series. It's a German thing!

Advantages: Super screen, good performance, nice looks.
Disadvantages: Awful speakers, good do with more RAM.

...The bad things: Could do with more RAM and Medion could concentrate on better support for drivers etc. They're German and I had a real time searching for the latest drivers. Overall: Pretty good, I'd recommend if you're not a serious user unless you want to upgrade the RAM. ...
