Introduction

Who could live without their laptop computer? Today everyone from gamers to grannies has their own laptop, complete with personal preferences from screen size to colour. Many of us prefer our laptops to desktop computers, even if we don't take them out of the house.

The days of complaints about poor battery power and over-heating are far behind us as innovation ensures all the essentials process effectively. Whether you’re a Mac fan or a die-hard PC lover, your ideal laptop is out there waiting for you to find it!

However, many laptop specs can seem confusing if you’re not familiar with the numbers and terminology used by vendors – and let’s face it, most of us aren’t. Luckily only a handful of these facts and figures are really essential; many are only useful if you’re after something particular from your laptop, for example, if its primary use will be playing networked games, or if you’re a designer looking to run a particular software package.

So what are the terms you do need to look out for? Our handy guide below will equip you with all the necessary information to identify what you really need from your laptop.

The essentials
1. CPU

The Central Processing Unit (CPU) is, in a nutshell, the ‘brain’ of your laptop. Working alongside the Operating System, the CPU processes the instructions you give the laptop and fetches data from the RAM to allow execution. Intel and AMD are the most well known brands of CPU.

2. RAM

Random Access Memory (RAM) provides space for your laptop to read and write data to be accessed by the Central Processing Unit (CPU). When people refer to a computer’s memory, they usually mean its RAM. The more RAM a computer has, the less often the CPU has to read data from the hard disk, allowing the computer to work significantly faster. If you’re planning to use the internet and several applications/software programs outside the core Microsoft Office suite, you should look for at least 2 Gigabytes of RAM. If you work with image, video or audio editing software you may want to increase this to as much as 4 Gigabytes to help improve running speed.

Packard Bell Easynote Overheating

Advantages: Makes a good doorstop
Disadvantages: It doesn't work.

As I have seen plenty of other people with the same problem, I thought I would write my review. All the people with Easynotes overheating who are being told to by a cooling pad, don't bother it doesn't work. I have cleaned the fan, purchased a 3 fan cooling pad, etc etc etc. But it still overheats, I have now been told that it is likely to cost me in excess of £85 to have a new fan installed if that is what the problem is, or possibly more than the ...
...has found a solution to the Easynote overheating problem I would be very interested to hear it. Please only genuine suggestions, I can think of more than enough silly ones for myself. My advice, BUY A NEW ONE, preferably a Dell, at least they're reliable and Dell offer an excellent warranty on their products. I know what my next purchase is going to be. ...

PB EasyNote is brilliant

Advantages: general performance, durability
Disadvantages: perhaps a little over-priced.

Had this laptop a while now, good reliability, good performance. I've had a few laptops recently but i tend to be a bit heavy handed and break the screen or the charger, but this one has taken a battering and still works perfectly. Ideal for students in my opinion. Hard drive could do with being bigger but the processor is good and fast. I think if I break this one I might actually buy it again. Not done that with a laptop before. I also like the ...

pack of rubbish

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: not enough memory etc

So I bought this laptop about two years ago its works great sometimes but sometimes not so great. Every now and then it just dies for no reason, and goes blue screened has done since I can remeber. It has no microphone unlike other laptops. The battery life lasts about 30 minutes if your lucky. It runs quite slow and doesnt have lot of RAM. I paid around 600 hundred for this laptop with intrest on top of that, so as you can imagine rather expensive. ...
...which about 15-20gb is taken up by the running system. Its only has around 864mb of ram meaning that Vista is slow at running. What I have never understood about this laptop is one minute I can have 864mb but then the next I can have 1gb. This laptop has got long durability though, I've had it about 2 years and its not let me down yet *touches wood* its been dropped, stood on and sat on and it still works like a treat. It's just ashame that it doesnt ...

"Packaged Hell" seems less awful than before

Advantages: Cheap, huge screen, good features, 2GB RAM, 1.9GHz
Disadvantages: Dire battery life

...SJ51 not the SW51. Packard Bell no longer sell the SW51. The basic machines are identical, but the SW had AMD Turion, 1GB RAM and 1.6GHz clock speed, and the SJ has the Athlon x 2, 2GB RM and 1.9Ghz, . Everything else is the same; if Ciao ever set up the right category out I'll move this review! MY PURCHASE I bought this Easy Note laptop from PC World a few weeks ago and paid £419. It is therefore pretty much an entry level machine, but I think ...
...this a great buy. Packard Bell have been making laptops for years - they have been in business since 1991 and are a familiar name, though not one really associated with quality, so I did have some initial concerns when the salesman suggested it. The name dates back to 1926, when they made radios and televisons for America, and was bought in the 1980s and attached to this new PC company. The computers they made in the early nineties were, frankly, ...
