I started smoking foolishly at the very early age of 14 because quite simply all my friends were doing it, foolish I know, after about 10 years of smoking, I finally decided to quit and did so on 26th June 1998 with the help of nicotine patches, although my husband still smoked, I managed to stay off them.

That is, until last November, first of all we had the holiday from hell, but that's another story, we sold our house and moved into our new home on 20th December 2002, what an egit I hear you all shout, I know and it's not advisable to move at that time of year, no matter how organised you think you are.

So, as you can imagine a significant amount of stress was surrounding me at that period and inevitably I reached for the dreaded weed again and before I knew it I was smoking 20-25 ciggies easily per day.

Friends and family were very disappointed but none as much as I was myself, I couldn't believe how stupid I had been and was very angry with myself.

Jan, Feb, March, April, May, June, July and August came around and stresses continued, Craig's mum had cancer, Craig's sister whilst pregnant with twins found one of them would not survive and Craig himself suffered health problems which we have been led to believe may be MS, so still I was smoking, all the while falling more into a depression, I was losing control.

Time to take action, back to the nicotine patches I went, worked for a week or so each time, finally I thought this is never going to work for me, I have to look at alternatives.

Munro Pharmacy had just opened a whole new purpose built 24 hour pharmacy in East Kilbride and I had heard they had treatment rooms within and one service they had offered was Laser Therapy for Stopping Smoking, Controling Your Weight and even Managing Everday Stress.

So I gave them a call, to find out more about it.

What exactly does it involve:

They use a non penetration laser on an addiction point in your ear, this apparently stops the craving and withdrawal symptoms.

So I made the appointment for Saturday 6th September 2003 at 11.30am, I was worried and had not spoken to anyone who had been through a treatment before and the £30 charge at first seemed quite excessive. I then thought about what I spent every week on ciggies, probably around £35-£40, or even nicotine replacement patches at £17 per week, so if it worked it would be worth it.

On the morning of 6th September I was smoking like a chimney before my appointment, I was trying to sicken myself, what a joke eh?

I nervously entered for my treatment and Joan (treatment lady) showed me to her room, asked me some questions, for example how many a day did I smoke and informed me her success rate was around 80%.

She asked me to lay down and relax on her treatment bed, of course there was a roll of paper towel over the bed to keep hygiene standards, shile she chatted away to me trying to make me relax, she explained that she would be using the laser in my right ear and it would take around 20 minutes.

She sat down on the chair at the side of the bed and continued to chat about everyday stuff, the weather, holidays etc.

I felt the inside of my ear getting warmer toward the end of the treatment but I never once felt any pain or uncomfortable at all.

20 minutes were over and I stood up, she informed me that she had now taken away the craving for nicotine and as long as I refrained from using any nictoine substitutes, even patches, chewing gum etc, the cravings would stay away.

She also told me to carry on as I normally would, for example if I didn't normally carry sweeties around with me then not to start as there would be no need.

She informed me that everyone's addiction levels can be very different and that if I felt any cravings over the next week or so, to come right back and see her for a further session which of course would be free of charge.

So I paid my £30 quite happily and feeling more positive, I got into the car where Craig was waiting (smoking a ciggie I might add) and went home, I carried on through the day, I'll admit it was on my mind often although not obsessively. I think this was more due to the fact I felt as if something was missing from my hands, the next day got easier and before I knew I was hardly even thinking about ciggies at all, still no cravings.

The great thing is my appetite did not increase as it has done in the past, in fact everything remained normal except for no ciggies, my temper remained under control although I did find myself getting frustrated with the smell, it was making me feel sick.

It is now the 3rd November, 8 weeks and 2 days from my treatment and I am pleased to say, still no ciggies, how wonderul!

Where do I find further information I hear all you addicts out there shout??

Well I do believe there are a number of places carry this treatment out throughout the UK, just check search engine for laser therapy or you can check online at www.laserwork.fsbusiness.co.uk or if you are local here are some phone numbers:
