Lavender is a great plant for hot sunny areas in the garden. It is evergreen and comes in a variety of colours not just lavender. These days there are white, red and pink ones and they all smell beautiful and the bees and butterflys love them.
I really like lavender stoechas (French lavender) which has dark purple flowers topped ith purple bracts. It is said to be slightly tender but the one in my garden has survived this cold winter but my soil tends to be sandy which is ideal.
Lavender is easy to propogate by semi ripe cuttings in summer. Just put it into sand until it roots. Hormone rooting powder can be used too.
Lavenders tend to get woody which stops them flowering so well so they should be cut down slightly after flowering and the woody stems cut away. It can be dried and this should be done before the flowerheads are fully open.
It is nice placed beside paths as it has a lovely smell when rubbed. All in all a reliable plant with lots of varieties, evergreen and spreads well.
