Lavender

There are around twenty eight species of lavender and it is one of the most commonest plants that we all associate with essential oils and bathroom products, when we buy toilet blocks, air freshener, essential oils and room deodorises, you can always find lavender as one of the scents.
It can be found in most well established gardens and in garden centres as it is a great plant for adding colour to the garden display.

This is a hardy evergreen plant, with fragrant flowers, it grows as a shrub which spread and set into the ground well in most soils and in most area's of the garden. Although they do like a sunny position they will grow well in part shady area's.
The plants usually grow to around a 3-4 ft spread so give them room when you position them in the garden. They will flower from July to September and the flowers can be picked and used for pot-pourris, or can be dried for sprinkling into the bath for relaxation, they can be dried and sewn into a little bag for hanging in the wardrobe to freshen the clothes and growing the plants near to the door of your house will distract flies and flying insects away in summer.
Cuttings can be taken in august and can be grown in a cold frame planted into equal parts of sand and peat, the shrubs can be clipped back at March to give them shape.

Lavender can be bought at all garden centres for around 99p and at the boot sales you'll get them anything from 20p to 50p depending on the size.
They can be grown in pots in the house especially in the bathroom to scent the air and keep flies out of the house.
It can also be bought in household products, and as an essential oil.
It has lots of healing properties and is especially good for it's relaxing properties. It is an appetite stimulant, a tonic and an antispasmodic. It is great for burns, scalds, wounds and sores as it has antiseptic properties.
Essential oils usually have to be used dilute although Lavender is one of the safe one's which can be used directly on the skin, you can also dry out the flowers of the plant to sew into a bag and drop into your bath. It can help with muscular pain, influenza, headaches and digestive problems and is especially good for women who suffer from pre-menstrual-tension.

An infusion of one teaspoon of powdered flowers in a cup of water can be sipped to help get rid of sickness or fainting. It can also be added to wine and sipped warm to help relieve wind, colic and stomach ache. Gargling with an infusion of lavender can help ease toothache too.
This is a great little plant for healing, scent and flower display. I have it all over the garden and wouldn't be without it.

It would never occur to me to add lavender to wine. I am not sure I would like it!
