Mountfield - Great value mower
Advantages: Easy and reliable start (Honda engin version) Disadvantages: None for the price
...Which Model and Why?
Mountfield 46cm (18") Self Propelled with Honda 4.5HP GCV135 OHC engine (a small premium over the ubiqitous Briggs and Stratton (B&S) engines on most budget models).
Chose the 46cm as a sensible weight mower for a medium sized garden. A larger cutting radius would have added £50-£80 to the price and really is not worth the fewer runs up and down unless you have a really big garden.
Self propelled was a ... ...broke - after that you need the strength of a shot-putter to move the mower around on anything less than level.
Grass collection was a good 50-60 litres and had the advantage of a perforated, mesh bag. This allows air to flow out of the cuttings and means a much more capable full load (nicely compact). My previous mower had a hard case collector and would need emptying far more regularly.
Cut hight is good going as low as 16mm and up to 65mm. This ...

Great Mower But Like Manouvering Lisa Riley
Advantages: Powerful, good wide cut Disadvantages: Heavy and takes an age to warm up
...and my recent purchase a Mountfield M6 power driven electric start mower.
I saw the Mountfield in a local power mower shop. It had been reduced from £900 to £560 and given the specification of the mower this seemed a bargain. It has a useful 21 inch cut and uses a powerful Briggs and Stratton OHV engine. The mower can be started using the key start electric ignition but the first thing I learned was that from cold you always need the cable start. ... ...enough power to get the engine motoring. Starting then is 3 quick presses on the bulb to shoot fuel in and pull the cord, and then pull the cord again , and again, and again. Eventually it will start and with an inevitability matched by Posh Spice having her picture in the tabloids, it will stop. This motor takes an eternity to get warm. It is no exaggeration to say every time this summer I have gone to use the mower it has taken 6 starts at least ...

A cut above (Their motto, not mine) . .
Advantages: No electric leads, & you don't have to push! Disadvantages: Noise.
. .
This is a cracking mower. It cuts 46 cms, (about eighteen inches for us mortals) although I think you should overlap cuts, so call it 14 inches. It does actually cut this width, and can leave a striped effect if desired due to the rear roller.. The 55 litre collection box is very efficient, unlike some cheaper makes. After using this machine for large areas of grass, I find it very easy to use, simple to keep clean, and the maintenance is a ... ...people do not like as they have to mix oil in with the petrol. It is a great shame when they will not just give it a try, you soon get used to it.
The engine powers the wheels as well as the blades, making it a doddle to use, all you do is steer. You can ajust the speed from a slow gentle walk, to a very brisk one indeed. The collection box actually works, this is a particular bone of contention with me, because so many are absolutely useless. One ...

mountfield one of the best on the market
Advantages: easy to use and reliable Disadvantages: none
...mowers I found that the mountfield range was the most suitable.
Mountfield do a good petrol engine mower range so no electric cable to limit distance.
With petrol it is safer to use if the grass is damp.
I have used mountfield for the last 15 years and I would not change. I have tried others but they all seam to be at a different standard.
All my customers are happy with the lawns when I finished them as it always leaves a nice even cut.
The ...

Flymo Quicksilver 46SDR petrol lawnmower
Advantages: Very reliable motor, metal rear roller, 50 litre grass box, hosepipe attachment cleaner. Disadvantages: Height adjustment lever, heavy weight, tendency to scuff moist lawns because of weight
...lawnmower, which was an electric Flymo 380 hover mower. As I tended to other people's lawns I chose to go for a petrol mower because of the flexibility it provided rather than having to either use their electricity or to take my heavy transformer with me. I decided to stick with Flymo because of their reputation and availability of spare parts. I needed one that was self-propelled, with a rotor blade and came with a rear roller. The one that met ... ...a very reliable 4 stroke Briggs & Stratton engine, which up to this day started first time , every time and unusually a metal rear roller (ideal for producing definite lines in the lawn as opposed to the plastic roller types). I purchased it on 5/5/2008 through a registered garden supplier on an internet auction site, who put it all together for me prior to collection. This came in very handy because the instruction book that came with it was not ...
