"An oasis of luxury at the edge of the Pyramids - by Le Meridien"

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in May 2012 prior to a Nile cruise, the package being operated by Co-operative travel.

The drive from the airport took the best part of 2 hours along a 3 lane motorway that had 6 lanes of traffic - an experience in itself. The hotel is situated close to the pyramids, with the main entrance about a mile away.

Initial impressions of the area were strange - an absolute bombardment of people and noise, then all of a sudden you are in an air conditioned oasis of peace and calm. The whole hotel exuded a feeling and look of exclusiveness.

Check in was easy, we were allocated a pyramid view room without asking - I think as visitor numbers were low any way. The room was large (very large actually) and extremely well appointed, with a well furnished balcony to watch the sun go down over the pyramids - quite a sight.

Whilst at the hotel, we took 2 tours (to the Pyramids and to the Egyptian Museum details of which do not form part of this review) which were organised through the hotel and went without a hitch.

There was a beautiful pool area with a swim up island bar. I have never swum in water that felt so clean and relaxing. The landscaping was sympathetic to the design of the hotel and used local stone (or so we were told). The pool area has a real bonus in that it has been designed do that you have full pyramid view whilst swimming - quite an experience.

Breakfast was a plentiful and varied hot and cold buffet of very high quality - delicious fruit, and every combination of British, American and European breakfast dish you can imagine as well as the best omelette bar I have ever found. They even had Marmite! I am not sure though that there were Egyptian alternatives available.

Dinner was again a buffet of very high quality, with a selection of hot and cold dishes, this time from around the world, you really did have the option to explore here. The mornings Omelette bar in the evening changed to a live cooking station, where you choice of meat cut was cooked while you waited, exactly as you asked for it to be cooked.

The general surroundings, as mentioned above were chaotic once you left the hotel - just looking out side gave you an insight into what life was really like. After the first night, we made a point of leaving the hotel on foot (admittedly no later than early evening) and walking to the nearest small shop (left outside the gates) to stock up with bottled water and foods for the next day in order to put a (very) little back into the locals pockets. The walk was only 200 yards, yet it took around 15 minutes each way as everyone wanted to say hello (or sell you something) - but it was worth it.

This really is a luxurious hotel and I would visit again like a shot.

Thank you for reading.

I'm likewise amused at the Marmite reference!

Hard to imagine an Eqyptian equivalent to Marmite! Sounds like a good place, though.
