When my daughter was 18 months old, my partner and me struggled to think of what to get the little one for Christmas so she got loads of little things for Christmas. This was one of the things we got her and it is still being used three years later.

You get 1 main unit which is about 9.5 x 10.5 cm and about 3.5 cm deep. You also get 26 magnets one of each letter of the alphabet. Each letter is on the same size rectangle with one curved edge. All the vowels are red coloured and the rest are either are blue, yellow or green. All of it is magnetic, unit and letters, so it can go on your fridge or any other surface you have which is magnetic but the fridge is the obvious place.

At the bottom of the main unit is a red slide switch, for OFF/ON quiet /ON load. Just to the right of the switch is a red musically note, if you press this note it says the alphabet. Next to that is the speaker.

Just above these switches is where you put the letters. You just put your letter in the hole and press it. It will then tell you the letter and it phonic pronunciation. It is said as a little song for the little one to sing and to help them remember the letter. How does it know what letter you have put in you might ask? If you turn the letters over you will find little notches at the bottom edge and in the unit there are little prongs where the edge. So when you put the letter in some prongs are not touched and others are pushed in, so depending on what prongs are pushed in depends what letter it says.

Here is one of the best bits; it is someone with an English accent and not an American accent.

This toy does require batteries, I cannot remember if I had to buy batteries or if it came with them. Though checking a few sites now it does come with batteries which are 3 AAA batteries. Even if I did it would not have mattered as I have not had to replace them in three years.

Yes I still have this toy and it is still being used. When the little one was a toddler and she was in the kitchen with me she was forever pressing the letter as she liked the alphabet song. It would drive me crazy but she was learning from it. Also if I was getting fed up with listening to it I would set it on quiet. When she was learning the alphabet she would stand in front of the fridge pressing the note trying to sing with it and if she got it wrong press it again and start again even if it had not got to the end of the alphabet. We are now working on the letters individually so like getting her to arrange the letters in order and seeing if she knows what the letter is and what it is phonics is and then placing it in the unit to see if she is correct. This is great educational toy that children can enjoy and is something that will last a good few years so well worth the money.

Be warned I have dropped the main unit on my foot a few times and it does hurt so try and avoid this.

It was priced at £14.99 when I brought mine and by looking at the shops now it is still priced at this. You can get it from Toys R Us, Smyths or any other good toy shop. The only different to the one you can buy now is that is comes with lower case or upper case letters and you can buy extra letters from Leapfrogs in uppercase but you cannot buy lowercase letters. This I find annoying as I would like both sets to help with my daughter's development..
