Learning indeed!

Advantages: Well written with good explanations and exercises
Disadvantages: A tad complicated, then it is computer programming

I got this book from amazon.co.uk for help with an A-Level computing project. It's a bit difficult to get into, but luckily I had a friend to help me who had already lent me Perl & CGI for the WWW - A Visual Quickstart Guide. Thanks to these facts, I'm managing to struggle through the boo, although I must add that I'm a complete novice programmer with my previous experience being mostly limited to HTML. Basically it explains things a lot more clearly than the aforementioned Visual Quickstart Guide which to me is a bigger help, so I actually know why things are happening, rather than just how to make them happen. This book is a must for anyone wanting to learn the language, although it doesn't do a lot on Web Programming using CGI - only the last chapter caters for that. ...

Review of Randal L Schwartz & Tom Christiansen - Learning Perl

A very friendly introduction

Advantages: Good layout, easy to read
Disadvantages: Could go into a bit more depth

An excellent authoritative introduction to Perl, one of the most commonly used languages of the web. As with all books published by O?Reilly this book is both informative and easy to read. The book has 19 chapters and begins with the history of Perl and the basic concepts. The later chapters cover functions, filehandles, data transformation and CGI programming. Each chapter ends with some exercise to practice what you have learnt. Answers are provided at the back of the book. The book is ideal for those who (like me) want to learn about Perl and what it can do. An ideal partner to ?Programming Perl?, this book shows you what Perl is and what it can in an easy to understand way. ...

Review of Learning Perl - Randal L. Schwartz

A "Perl" Of Wisdom

Advantages: A huge amount of info
Disadvantages: A huge book is needed to house it all

At the start of this academic year it was decided that I needed to teach myself Perl so I could use the language to program my masters project. It wasn?t a language I had any experience of, so I got hold of a Perl in 3 weeks book and took just one of those to learn the basics. When a books fair came to uni the week after, I bought a copy of ?Perl By Example?, mainly, it has to be said, because it was pretty cheap and the only Perl title they had - it's not an overly common language like, say, C++ or HTML. But, I?ve been using is almost every day since then, and it?s quite a useful title to have on my shelf. ?Perl By Example? is not a book I would recommend for complete beginners. It doesn?t feature tutorials or even appropriately lengthened chapters to treat as such. However, once you know a bit of the language, it?s a good reference ...
