---Overview---

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is the 13th game in the world renown Legend of Zelda series. Twilight Princess is an action-adventure game developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis and Development and published by Nintendo for the Wii and Nintendo GameCube video game consoles.

Twilight Princess was originally planned for release sometime in November 2005 but was delayed by Nintendo so the programmers could add more content and refine the game further. The Wii version of the game was released on the Wii launch dates ( North America - 19 November. Japan - 2 Dcember. Australasia - 7 December. Europe - 8 December 2006) and this makes it the first ever Zelda game to launch with a console. The Gamecube version was released in December 2006, during the production process the game was dubbed Wind Waker 2, a sequel to the Gamecube classic Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, it was then named Twilight Princess later on in production.

Twilight Princess is the first Zelda game to be rater 'T' using the ESRB rating system for the games fantasy violence and animated blood. PEGI rated the game suitable for persons aged 12+.

---Development---

E3 2005 sparked many rumours over the Twilight Princess also at E3 this year the official title of the game was announced. The game sits a couple of decades after Ocarina of Time in terms of the story. A series of interviews followed eventually by a playable demo showed the world many new features such as Link starting the game as a ranch worker in a very rural village. Also not only changes to the horse riding controls of Ocarina of Time but also the ability to battle on horseback and thematic differences between dungeons.

The game recieved many awards at both E3 2005 and E3 2006 including Best Console Game of 2006 and Best Playable Game at 2005 E3.

The games released was delayed extensively, originally Nintendo wanted to release the game somewhere along the lines of November 2005 but it was put back to atleast, in August 2005 Nintendo announced, to disappointed fans, that it was not going to be released til sometime after March 2006. Nintendo stated the delay was due to the developers wanting more time to finish the game properly, fine tuning the gameplay expierience and adding more content to the game. Again in February 2006 Nintendo announced that the game will be put back further til Fall 2006, but before the fall of '06 Nintendo announced that the games release dates, at long last patient fans got a answer they wanted. The game would be on sale in all three territories by mid December 2006.

When fans questioned the delays and what took so long during the production a series of statements from the production team it took the Twilight Princess game testers over 70 hours to complete the game. Many critics believed this to of been a cover story by Nintendo as on average it has took around 30 hours to complete the game.

Many speculations accured druing the process of the games completion one of which stated that the Gamecube version of the game when played on Wii was fully compatible with the Wii Remote, this was instantly dismissed by Nintendo.

---Gameplay---

Going back to a more naturalistic style of gameplay, far more advanced than Ocarina of Time and yet far removed from the Cel-Shaded style we saw in Wind Waker. The game is infact built on a much stronger game engine similar to that of Wind Waker so Cel-Shading is still used but to more subtle effect. The game also features Link as a young man, similar to the second half of Ocarina of Time, he is not like the child in Wind Waker. The game rivals that of Majora's Mask in terms of how 'dark' the tone of the game is.

The game play is very similar to that of any other Zelda game. It is a action adventure game where you as Link battle enemies, travel and explore the game world while doing so. Also on the game most non playable characters can be interacted with so at hear is shares familiar RPG foundations.

Also there are puzzle elements found in the game too. During the games many temples which need to be explored there are times where you come across certain tricky puzzles which need you to do a bit of thinking and planning before you attempt them.

At certain points in the game Link can transform into a Wolf, which offers the player more scope as human Link and wolf Link have different abilities. Link transforms into a wolf when he enters the Twilight Realm, this is a dark mysterious place which instead of being a seperate world, is it infact Hyrule. I will just mention some of the abilities that both forms of Link can use druing the game then i will come onto how the controls work.

As human Link those who are familiar with other Zelda games will feel right at home. He can fight with sword and shield, slingshot and bow and other items you find during your quest. Link can traverse many different types of enviroments including mountains to vast fields. He has different abilities which help him do so, he can run, jump climb and swim and you will use all of these and many more abilities to progress in the game. New sword fighting techniques can also be learnt in the game, widening the choice of how to assault any enemy you come across. Also the targeting system from the likes of Wind Waker remains, 'Z' targeting allows you to lock onto enemies or frienly characters.

Wolf Link has a accute sense ability which allows him to track traces, one example of the use of this is when tracking kidnapped children. Also Wolf Link can dig holes which in some areas grant access to new parts of the level or say on the Hyrule Field will uncover items such as the games currency or Heart Segments. As Wolf Link the player can hunt ghosts known as Poes, the more Poe Souls you collect the greater the prizes are for doing so. The last major ability is the way you can communicate with animals in the game, sore impart very useful information. Also as Wolf Link you meet your sidekick the for game, the imp like Midna who comes from the Twilight Realm. Midna offers impartial advice to Link and you often find yourself calling upon her for help. As Wolf Link Midna rides on your back in the Twilight Realm, when you are human she does not maintain a constant presence on the screen and will only emerge when called upon. Midna replaces the traditonal Fairy which helped Link through the previous games.

So how does the Wii Remote work with this game which is quite complicated. Very well indeed is the answer! As human link the remote is used to swing your sword, the Wii Remote is very sensitive to how this is used so it detects how you swing it altering the combat performed by Link. Thrust it to the screen and Link will thrust the sword into his opponent. Also the Wii Remote is used for such tasks as aiming and firing such weapons as Bows and Slingshots and much more. Also at cooling down time, it can be used as a fishing rod which is one of the games more trivial uses for the controller. All in all it is very well executed indeed. You do have to use the Wii Knunchuck as the analog stick is what is used to actually navigate Link around the game world.

Epona makes a welcome return as the trusty steed in the game, even horse riding is made very easy and Epona will be your main form of transport during the game. Also Epona can be used for when horseback battle is needed and she makes a great companion when you have to joust with certain types of enemy.

---Plot---

Don't worry i'm not going to spoil the outstanding story for anyone so i will just give the brief view of the games plot. Feel free to skip this section entirely if you wish to do so.

The game begins with Link working as a ranch worker in his hometown of Ordon, a very small rural farming community. To begin with little tasks are given to Link which is good as it teaches the player the key principles of the game. Soon after monstors attack the village and take children away including Links closest friend Llia. Link persues the kidnappers but a strange monster pulls him through a veil of darkness and into the Twilight Realm. But wait, Link is no longer human he is now a wolf, what has happened? Why is he here? Where are his friends now and will he ever return to his human form? All of those plus many more questions will come along as the player goes deeper into the game.

---Graphics---

As i mentioned before the game has took on a much more realistic look following the Cel-Shaded graphics which were seen in Wind Waker. Many people who say the Wii can't compete with the likes of the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 need to see this game in motion and then maybe they will take back what they said. The graphics on the game are very good indeed. Characters are well designed and all have flud animations, including Apona the horse who has had much time put into her animation to make it outstanding. I think one of the best examples of the games graphics is what you see when you go fishing on the lake. The scene at the fishing lake is beautiful, blossoms falling from the trees and floating on the water, the sunlight piercing the high canopy. The gorgeous reflections on the water all add to the games unique feel it really is a game which looks best in motion. Also the darker areas of the game work well too, fires lighting up vast caverns, flickering torches casting shadows in the surroundings. Even the twilight realm looks beautiful in a strange way.

The Wii version also displays in a 16:9 format in 480p, where the GameCube version plays only in 4:3. So the visulas on the Wii verison are superior.

---Sound---

Like all other Zelda games, there is no complete voice acting, characters scream, shout, laugh, cry instead and this is very effective indeed, it adds to that unique atmosphere that a Zelda game creates. The music also is very well composed, from sweeping scores which acompany you as you gallop across the land to the more intimate songs which truly show the friendship between Link and Llia. Sound effects are also very good, from arrows fizzing past Links ear to the clang that sword on shields clashing together make, all adds to a strong audio expierience. The only drawback is the sound effects which come from the Wii Remote, i find these a little off putting because in my opinion they are slightly cheesy, but they can be turned off, and thats what i did when i was playing the game.

---Response---

The game recieved alot of critical response when it was released, game website IGN claimed it is ' the best Zelda game ever' and also stated it is the second best launch game ever, behind Super Mario 64 stating ' one of the finest games i have ever played'. The game also won 5 Game of hte Year awards from varying game magazines and websites and was nominated for 10 Game of the Year awards in total.

Sales also reflected what gamers thought about the title. The Wii version of the game sold well over one million copies in the Americas compared to the 139,011 copies it sold in Japan. Europe clocked up sales of nearly quarter of a million with 240,000 copies sold on the first weekend. The game also sold three copies to every four purhcases of a Wii console. As of July 2007 3.1 million copies of the game have been sold on the Wii compared with the 1.32 million sold on the Gamecube.

Alot of critics responded to the poor sales in Japan compared to that of Europe and the Americas. Seeing as Nintendo and Zelda originated from Japan sales were predicted to be much much higher. Shigeru Miyamoto the creator of many Nintendo game series publicly expressed that he was disappointed with the sales in Japan. He said ' Well, I think a lot of people who bought the Wii are not necessarily the types of people who are interested in playing that kind of game. And a lot of the people who would want to play it (due to the lack of the console) can't find a Wii! But mostly, I think it's that there are fewer and fewer people who are interested in playing a big role-playing game like Zelda'.

---Recommendations---

I would highly recommend this game to any fan of the series as they would not be disapointed in any way. Also to anyone who is looking for a very fresh and original adventure game and certainly if you are thinking of getting a Wii i would consider buying it, as it is the finest game available so far. I'd avoid it if you do not like adventure games, also if your not a fan of puzzle games as at certain areas in the game it can require a serious bit of thinking. Enjoy!
